Show notes 182

Hello, hello. It’s the shows notes again. This week in pics we kick off with the Chanqez badge, followed by curly badges for the Allegro and Cortina (eortina?). Then we have the cobra head shifter and the homemade bust of ‘Nigel Mansell’. Both are such exquisite pieces. Then we have the Elvis Mercedes, the very baggy Alfa shifter, the Volvo dealer sticker, the E51 Elgrand, the VW Multivan and Richard working in it, and ludicrously moustached man Stakka Bo. This will all make sense when you hear the podcast. Probably.

The homemade aero Civic that Richard mentioned

Birmingham Car Keys

Here we go by Stakka Bo

Stakko Bo

Not to be confused with Stakker Humanoid

Comments

Due to the retro font on black background, and a critical bit of chrome having flaked off, my car was only referred to as the Ford "ONION" for the whole time I had it.

Andrew Jude

The awful F1 rain light style is a thing, https://www.whip-customs.com/product-page/f1-led-rain-light

Daniel P

Thank you very much.

Smith and Sniff

Elvis’ BMW 507 is on display at BMW’s museum in Munich

Simon Whittaker

My wife (has the Ion 5) was thrilled about this

Ed Storer

Good point. Forgot both of them and the Panda.

Ed Storer

Fiat 500s and Abarth 595s have electric window switches on the dash above the gear lever. Does that count?

Andrew C

The Eor-tina made me laugh, but I was imagining a sad donkey of a car. "oh, I can't be bothered to start up today", "sorry, my scuttle panel has all rotted away again" in a voice like Marvin from Hitch hikers. That sort of thing.

Firstdan2000

He probably needed to go for an eye test or twelve.

Howard Rose

Jeep Wrangler. Also Jimny but now commercial only.

Ed Storer

Hm, that's a good one. I'm struggling to think of any current cars except the new Volvo EX30 which seems to have inboard switches (probably to save money). Richard

Smith and Sniff

So oil last changed on 09-02-03?

Smith and Sniff

Speaking of oven cleaner (and modelmaking), Mr Muscle oven cleaner is great for stripping paint from plastic models without damaging the plastic. I imagine it would probably remove the paint from a car too…

Scott

Useless car badge fact of the day, the 4 dots on the steering wheel of the ionic 5. H in morse code is four dots so there is a Hyundai H on the wheel after all.

John Taylor

or "DEEESSSGEEE POP N BANG" That would fill the boot on most sporty VAG models and also provide adequate warning of Flute like behaviour.

John Hammond

The "CHECK THESE" additions to the end of the paragraph in the Word doc are making me twitch. If you're dead set against using comments (which are perfect for this kind of thing) then at least add two colons or some other easy-to-search-for pattern so you don't end up publishing them by mistake.

Grim...

TBH, I think the "6-speed" badge should come back. Might spur the odd manuel transmission sale.

Brendan McAleer

Jonny "No More DMs" Smith ? Even if sent with Peace & Love after the 20th of October ? https://youtu.be/hV8JFj17AtY?si=rLNeo_GX-TkMgIKu

Matt Swindells

Considering there was a lockdown and also he had a government car (and poss wasn’t even allowed to drive), it managed to do 6000 miles between Oct 20-21

Ed Storer

For BCT4 can we have a list of vehicles currently on sale with inboard electric window switches please? I can only think of two right now.

Ed Storer

Agree with this but also think it’s about giving the company car driver a bit of status without actually having to provide them with extra equipment.

Ed Storer

They had front badges on the grille with ‘Lamda Sond’ - exhaust gas air sensor??

Ed Storer

When I was a kid I thought they were VanTool

Ed Storer

Didn't some cars (Volvo?) Have Catalytic Converter stickers in the back window also ??

Tom Lane

I've never understood the badging obsession of the 70s and 80s. Why do you need to advertise the transmission of the car? Automatic badges on things like Mk2 Granadas. Great, you are too important/lazy/mono-legged to change gear yourself. At the recent Hubnut social, there was a Honda Accord with a badge '5 speed'

John Hammond

The coach driver rushed into IKEA to try and find out if his coach was a VanHool or a Vanttool - talking of badges which aren't very clear.

John Hammond

Excessively Badged factory spec cars also annoy me... take for example.. 'CITROEN C25 Prestige Turbo 2 ABS' The badges almost take up the full width of the tailgate.

Tom Lane

I think the "Mansell" bust was actually supposed to be Eddie Jordan. BH hat, sidies, ear ring...

Owain Kelly

Italian markets got the Iveco Daily range of the late 1970s/early 80's complete with Alfa Romeo badging.

John Hammond

On the illegible script badge, I nominate the Renault Fueap aka the Fuego

John Hammond

Nice BCT preview on the laptop !!!

Mark Heeler

I enjoy the cursive nonsense that is both the 60s/70s Monaro badge & it's modern equivalent from the early 00s. I believe I still have the badge from mine in the glovebox but dare not open it to check as the entire thing falls off if you pull the latch.

max newman

That bust is spectacularly shite isn't it. Hahah.

Robin Johnsen

Johnny what happened to the allegro ss you and your brother rescued. 🤔

Andrew Barnes

Stakka Bo the Scandi Stereo MC:s nice tune

Skelmansi

Oh, and also wanted to add this Van Fact, as it seemed S&S adjacent. The best-selling Alfa-Romeos of all time were the company's trade vans (Autotutto, Romeo 2, 3, F12/A12). The passenger variant has perhaps the greatest minivan name of all time: the Alfa-Romeo Promiscuo.

Brendan McAleer

On that side of hypermiling salute things, this is a bit name-droppy, but I talked to Ari Vatanen a few weeks ago, and he told me that everyone in the part of France where he lives most of the time does the Climb Dance one-handed salute to each other (and to him) and he always does it back.

Brendan McAleer

My dad had a succession of Fowwaaahd’ Zodiacs and Zephyrs. The Mk3 Zody badge could easily be Zudiuc.

Chris Rayner

Boris Johnson’s Previa M579MHV was registered on 14-02-1995, had a colour change from turquoise to green on 01-03-1995. Ownership changed on 10-02-2003.

Howard Rose

I told my then girlfriend now wife I would willingly stab myself through the hand than go to IKEA on Saturday!

Andy Pinchock

I have just bought a Lancia Fulvia Zagato 1.6. The badge for “fulviasport” is soooo 70s and unreadable.

Adam Sillett

Not swirly 70s but angular 80s - The Ford Onion.

Dave Law

Oh dear Lord I felt pain reading that. Those poor cars. Is he trying to punish them?

Ed Storer

Anyone got a link to the 90s rave footage Richard mentioned? I thought one would be in here :-/

Mark Elliott

I always like to interpret a hard-to-read logo incorrectly. And that's why I've been buying my shoes from Clanks for years.

Ben Backhouse

I grew up with an E51 Elgrand at home in Mozambique. It was the best car my dad had ever bought in a long list of cool cars, mostly Japanese of course.

Daniel Pronto

And apologies for ignoring the do not DM me statement…I thought it was worth it 😂

Dean Hempshall

All of my girlfriend hated mpv’s and estates because it’s a mam car, in reality it’s the reason why those cars and dead because people don’t want to be a mother in a estate or a mpv. See my mum drove me around in a 1967 vw beetle in the late 90s early 2000s so a car that you don’t have to climb passenger was cool to me.

Tim Murphy

Can I suggest that the Mansell bust third brake light also illuminate the cherry of his tab when depressing the brake?

Joe Burwell

Strangely the footbath at our local pool was warmer than pool so every week one or two of the school spanner's would trash around in it pre swim. All those baths have a standard issue floating plaster...

Cornish Rider

The talk about wrongly cleaning cars reminded me of what I saw the other day. One person in our neighbourhood had a late 90's Honda accord, this had the clear coat paint flaking off it. He kept it outside and he used to store it under a blue plastic tarp so that didn't do it much good, but I always wondered how the paint got that flaky, my thought was he used to take it to those automatic car wash things and the brushes flailed the paint. He recently sold the Honda, and got an early 2000's BMW 3 series. I saw him polishing it the other day, using a power drill (plugged in variety) and one of those cotton discs running over the paint at high speed. The disc was black so not new at all, if that even matters, so it was probably the one he used on the Honda. I was somewhat tempted to explain to him how and why what he was doing was so wrong, but then remembered that he keeps the BMW under a tarp, (a grey tarp so maybe bought from an auto shop), but he's got is fixed down with straps in the wheel arches going across the bonnet and boot. To make things worse... he has a garage that he never uses.

Stephen Voss

As a kid, I thought the blue Ford oval said “Jord”

Wayne Brook

Thanks lads - just went down a 25 minute 90’s-00’s dance music YouTube rabbit hole.

Harry McKeown

Love the reference to Stakker Humanoid - as a child of the 90s/00s, I first came across it as the 2001 version used as the main theme music in the Wipeout Fusion PS2 game that I lost many happy childhood hours to. Great to listen to it again, have found the soundtrack on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YsCpvmaA2s

Simon Turner

The best thing about the cobra head is that you can see the mould line that's then been 'chromed'. That's top quality that is...

Simon Turner

Scuderia Choderia!

Charlie Bee

Can Jonny post photos of his kids supra? Sounds brilliant

Gabriel Grist-Parker

Thank you for the cheeky preview of Boring Car Trivia 4!

Stuart Richards

With regards to practical box cars, I really wish the Giugiaro Columbus from 1992 had made it into production. As for scripty car badges, there is some fun to be had from Jowett, Studebaker and Austin.

Tom Lanigan

That Alfa chode is spectacular!

Chris Taylor

That Mansell bust is shocking; it honestly looks like a botched showstopper from Bake Off. The wax statue of Mansell from a very recent episode of The Grand Tour was much more impressive. At least that had the mustache-to-eyebrow proportion correct!

Ben Lucareli

The E51 cobra head proper made me chuckle when I saw it posted in one of the owners clubs, I just had to send it to you guys 😂
