Podcast 182 - The Dodge Chanqez

Jonny recalls a car badge confusion. Also in this episode, a very old couple in a very advanced car, hypermilers’ salutes, washing a small car with a small bucket, the loss of foot baths from municipal swimming pools, being a good swimmer, an actual cobra head shifter, a remarkable tribute to Nigel Mansell, mystery third brake lights, an Elvis Mercedes, a very baggy Alfa shifter, things IKEA should sell, school run chic, Jonny’s car woes, and Richard’s brief review of the VW Multivan.

Just walked through our assembly floor and one of the associates is playing 90s Eurobeat/Stellantis 😂😂

Talking of vans, I went with my parents to the camping and caravanning show at the NEC at the weekend, and was pleased to see a caravan that was at the intersection of the Jonny and Richard Venn diagram - it being called the Sport & Fun caravan! Let's be honest, the MPV/Minivan kind of car will make a comeback under the marketing guise of being more practical than other cars... People will sadly forget they chose faux-SUV's in favour of more practical cars. I once had a 2006 Scenic, not the best made car, engine was crap, but it was the most practical thing ever! It was massive inside and so much storage!

Richard, I think you are referring to the Hygge Park development on the A4 Bath Road on the edge of Keynsham. They had to put the phonetic pronunciation in brackets underneath to avoid confused locals calling it "Higgy" Park.

John Hammond

Probably to no surprise, Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters built a robot for Robotwars pre Mythbusters. That after a couple of runs was asked not to come back. (Blendo)

Cars with curly writing, a good friend of mine, was always referring to the Ford China....WTAF ...... I let it slide, but after several mentions of said un known Ford, I asked him to point out the aforesaid mystery Ford... It was the Ghia badge ! Dickhead!

Paul Fargher

Now that IKEA kit car. It has to have a stupidly unlikely name. With graphic instructions free from description in any script. What about the IKEA Kark It?

Chris Rayner

Your talks about 3rd brake lights and tailgating also reminded me of whose idea was it that putting turn signals/indicators in the bumpers was a good idea?! I saw a Fisker Ocean in the US with the red "blinkers" (also a stupid design) and in the video you only saw them AFTER the car had made the turn. One of the stupidest design trends that is down right dangerous. What if you are pulling a trailer? Yes the trailer's lights should go on at the same time but what if there burn out?

Andy Pinchock

If you say "hang on" but without the "ha". But in my broad west of Scotland accent it sounds like I've been hit on the head with a sledgehammer

Stuart Maxwell

How should one pronounce it?

Ed Storer

Index finger extended. Do a lightening strike. Pow!🤣

Alistair Neish

Got his Plaxton outside on idle…🤣🤣

The old F1 rain light seems awfully popular with the BMW 1 Series crowd, lots available online and I've seen them in the wild. Not completely tasteless actually. I bloody love Robot Wars Jonny, grew up with it and Scrapheap Challenge but I wasn't old enough to enter either before they ended. Battlebots is pretty good but I don't have the money to build a modern equivalent or any desire to go to Las Vegas.

Matt Tester

Richard's rendition of Hygge reminds me of my attempt of pronunciation of a local Asian Street food kitchen called 17Ngon, which usually has me sounding like I've either been recently lobotomised or I'm experiencing a stroke

Stuart Maxwell

The hand signal for aero cars could be the hand dolphin from Rebecca Black, Friday

Shane Kivlehan

I'd like to think Dodge Chanqez is an close ally of The Conquistadors

The best bit of Sunday…
