Added 2023-09-10 17:00:04 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard get a few things off their chests. GTI concept, synthetic fuels, six annoying things about the Abarth 500e, strange subtitles, moving the entire podcast to Miami, the worst ever guest on Hot Ones, canal boating with DJ Khalid, a British donk, and the Toyota Century SUV.

2023-09-18 07:26:40 +0000 UTCAs an American I of course have to agree! :-D To be honest though, I started watching a lot of British TV when I moved to Germany and I have noticed more and more "North American" pronunciations and phrases creeping in...

2023-09-13 07:55:49 +0000 UTCI will add to this, most of his shorts illustrate that the difference in pronunciations is usually more to do with the British than the Americans getting it wrong!

2023-09-12 14:51:14 +0000 UTCConcerning the lack of H in 'erbs. This guy makes great Shorts about these linguistic differences in American and he made this one on this very issue... https://youtube.com/shorts/xN13Dpk0tdE?si=rEag4_Vb78oR1qR9

2023-09-12 14:41:18 +0000 UTCThe banger racing “kudos” in getting the oldest car you can is one of the reasons I cant bring myself to sell my ‘78 Volvo 245 project that I’m never going to get done because “life” (and no garage) I know that if I try and sell it the chances are its going to get raced, and that saddens me

2023-09-11 21:56:07 +0000 UTCI am so with you on the 'erbs front - it's the only Americanism that really gets my goat. Especially as they're so inconsistent about it - see Herbie Goes Bananas, etc.... BTW are either of you heading to the Kop Hill climb this weekend? Always an enjoyable day out to see some quality classics

2023-09-11 13:39:31 +0000 UTCIf you find me on twitter, I have a tweet somewhere (I ought to pin it to my profile) of photos from my trip to Japan/ greater Tokyo area from TWENTY years ago this November, which shows photos of Toyota's 'futuristic' EVs, which are hydrogen fuel cell cars. They're still attempting to make the Mirai that I photographed as a 2003MY car happen. * cue Mean Girls meme about trying to make Fetch happen, when it's not happening *
Ant Brown
2023-09-11 10:21:43 +0000 UTCHear hear... a similar rant could be made for hydrogen. Yes we need green hydrogen but to replace the black and grey hydrogen already in use. Putting it into cars or for heating homes is absolute nonsense...

2023-09-11 09:31:51 +0000 UTCBillowy linen suits can be found in most branches of Macy’s in the southern states. I bought 3 of them a few years ago - wearing one now.

2023-09-11 08:50:15 +0000 UTCI thiiiiink it was standard on the driver's seat. Having ordered a new 500 I should remember this but I can't be certain. R

2023-09-11 08:40:51 +0000 UTCThat’s even more baffling - surely one would want the driver’s seat to keep its position. Unless … it was carried straight over from the LHD market and therefore it was for the driver’s seat in its original design.
Ed Storer
2023-09-11 08:34:00 +0000 UTCOh yes, I remember the 'memory' seat tilt option. But only for the passenger seat, I think. And it was quite cheap, to the point you wondered why it wasn't standard. Richard

2023-09-11 08:32:01 +0000 UTCSome relevant boring car trivia here: 1) On early iterations of the current FIAT 500 (2007-?), front seats that remembered there position after being flipped forward for access to the rear seats were an cost option, if I remember correctly. 2) On early BMW E36s, trying the door handles when the car was locked activated the interior lights. My father had one and tried each door handle after having locked the car by remote (I don’t think he trusted it). At some point BMW clocked the obvious security issues here and removed that bit of the wiring harness for later cars.

2023-09-11 08:19:29 +0000 UTCThe Ford SMax is THE best SUV available to the masses, avoid the POWERSHIT gearbox and they are the loveliest 7 seater that returns good mpg and looks SEXY. Its also based on the mk4 mondeo platform and therefore has a sporty ride quality unrivalled by and similar product on the market. They make great VANS too esp for taking quantities off grumble mags to the recycling Finally a metallic black one compete with privacy glass in the rear and an ADDISON LEE stickers in the back window makes for a great FAKE TAXI. I have one for sale, they're brilliant...

2023-09-11 07:39:03 +0000 UTCI tweeted about Richard's level of rage yesterday as I listened to this Patreon release on my dog walk. His dullard- shaming is appropriate and absolutely spot- on. Arguably all my cars are classics (newest car I own is a 2001 A2) and we have an EV that will shortly be charged off our imminent solar install. Pretending that EVs are anything less than smoother and (if you can home charge) more convenient than ICE cars is just cultish. I may have misspelled the last word of that sentence...

2023-09-11 06:07:40 +0000 UTCRichard, your heated rant about people's approach to the switchto electrified general car transport was spot on. I work on classic cars for a living but have daily commuted on electric power for 5 years and I completely agree and obviously I'm banking on synthetic fuel and regular fossil fuel being available for a long time to come to protect my career but it will be nicer on the roads when all the dull cars are electric. Keep up the good work.

2023-09-11 05:51:45 +0000 UTCThe worst atrocity commited by the Toyota Century SUV is is that its not even based on the proper Toyota SUV platform as in the Landcruiser and the Lexus LX. Instead its basically a transverse fwd minivan sharing underpinnings with a rav-4. Rich and Johnny are wrong about the old money though, the whole production run is already sold out to the Toyota C suite golf club pals.

2023-09-10 22:47:02 +0000 UTCThe Ford S-Max is undeniably one of the best looking large family cars. The problem is in the latter years it had been severely handicapped by engine choices which I think maxed out at 1.5t petrol. In its youth the S-Max was available with a 2.5 turbo of of Focus ST which was an epic combination, but when I needed a family car I could not find one with any life left in it. I think the S-Max is much better looking than the Merc R class (the next-best looking low roof mpv type thing) but the R class has the benefit of a 6.2 AMG V8.

2023-09-10 19:07:12 +0000 UTCMoaning may be, but a lot of truth especially about peoples perception of the future of cars in general. I too like the look of the ID2 GTI, it shows a lot of promise. Let's hope they don't over price it.
