Show notes 167

Quite a mellow and meandering show this week, and not much to include in the show notes. So we’ve just got some photos of the Ioniq 6 (high speed race to a rural station not pictured). And now some links…

A great example of a clutch slipper train (leaving Bath/Bath)

One of those interesting JDM GR86s for sale

Jonny’s TVR barn find

If you’re at Goodwood Festival of Speed on Thursday, Friday or Saturday of this week maybe we’ll see you there. Give one of the agreed codewords to get a free sticker.

Think your family had the extended bladder option too by the sounds of it...

Craig Mathieson

the purchase of the R53 i partly blame on Richard and Jonny as i'm sure they mentioned that they would be classics soon so the prices would go up, that was my excuse when i bought it!

Matthew Powell

I recently bought a mid range DAB head unit to go in my R53 Mini, partly fort he DAB and the handsfree calling, but also so I can stream the podcast on my Monday commute, they no longer supply a case for the removable faceplate! I still have the Kenwood system that I got as a 21st present, cassette head unit (complete with motorised D-mask+ removable faceplate) and that came with a hard case that i would proudly carry when i left the car, i phoned the shop I bought the new unit in and they told me that no head units come with carry cases now!

Matthew Powell

Maybe that’s what he means - like ‘check out my other items’ on eBay listings

Ed Storer

Did a “find another” search and there’s a dealer selling 2 pretty much the same Vauxhall corsas and both ads say that you will not find another. They literally have another

Oliver Q

By strange coincidence I just listened to the John Kearns episode of Off Menu (ep 186) where they discuss old people’s aversion to drinking water. A cracking episode which I think Smith & Sniff fans would enjoy also.

Chris Wyman

Starting to think that the worst punishment for a sinful life is being reincarnated as a Bag For Life.

Brendan McAleer

"Gooseneck in the departure lounge"!!!! Class...

Nick Davies

It was hardly a sporrrwaaaattt-aaaaaggggghhhhh train though.

Peter Heamon

My understanding of mass traaaaaaaansit stands corrected

Chris Taylor

Great Pod as always, however just to pick up Jonny on an inaccuracy. He said that if a listener is in their 30’s they won’t understand the trauma of Radio theft. WELL I am 29 and have only recently had my radio and my sunglasses stolen out of my Traaaaansit. It turns out much like fashion crimes come back around as well. To add insult to injury the bastards cut through the loom while doing it.

Ollie Todd

Great memories of what we like to call the "drive-by bye-bye"

Phil R

I used to drive a 'clutch slipper' class 165/6 for GWR. Uses a fluid coupling drivetrain, bit like a torque converter - it slips up to about 50 mph with full engine power, and then direct drive with speed proportional to engine rpm.

Peter Heamon

Re hotel breakfast checkout: Does Jeremy have the optional extended fuel tank option ticked? It might explain it. My father had that option ticked on his e class when I was younger and we could get from Kent to the Alps without stopping

Tom Howroyd

Loved the Merchandise tune, guys!

Those "RC spec" GR86 look like they are ready for parking in Paris, even got the "blank" bumbers on it: https://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/09/toyota-gt86-comes-in-stripped-down-rc-flavor-in-japan/

nmdelgado_81

The JDM spec GR86 is that not for the one make GR86 racing series?

Stephen Voss

I think the train gear issue is a characteristic of the transmission, which is made by Voith. Voith also make bus gearboxes and they do exactly the same thing especially when you try and reverse them. Maximum revs but minimal progress.

John Hammond

It's a North / South of England pronunciation battle. As a general rule, people in the south will pronounce it with the silent (and missing R) as "Barth." People in the North will not pronounce the silent/missing R with the result it becomes "Baff" The now increasingly rare yocals have their own dialect (as can be heard in the platform announcement being made in that video) and pronounce it "Barrfff" They are all wrong anyway, its actually called "Aquae Sulis".

John Hammond

I just watched the clip without listening to the ep, and I'm like is that not just diesel electric? As an American I do love when Richard says Bath/Bath. I assumed we said it one way, and they the other. Is it just his American wife's influence he says both?

Kevin Perham

Yep, most diesel trains have been like that for over 50 years 🙂

Richard Gledhill

The train thing is because it’s a diesel electric. If I remember rightly the engine runs at whatever rpm for optimal efficiency and drives a generator, which then powers electric motors to drive the wheels an’ all that (i.e. power to the wheels isn’t linked to engine rpm)

Chris Taylor

Great stuff. The wife and I will be at Goodwood on the Saturday, based in the Polestar stand (free tickets from those lovely people). Hopefully I'll get chance to say hello. I'll be at the OTLOT recording a few days later too!
