Podcast 166 - Magic Mike and the Mechanics

Jonny and Richard have an idea for a car-themed stage show. Also in this episode, Jonny’s got a tow rope in his pants, Fiat aren’t making any more grey cars, Instagram’s Olivier Francois has been dunked in orange paint, some cars look like computer mouses, Mercedes painted an SLS in taxi beige, confident people order sports cars in brown, Derek Bell modelled Porsche merch in the ‘80s, Magnus Walker seems to wear hats made of sound deadening mats, there’s an extremely specific Ford Mondeo Facebook group, Richard likes a correct key fob, and someone has an XJS hatchback for sale.

Anyone got a tow rope?

Edward Ferguson

But only for the French and Quebois Canadian markets!

Miles Atkinson

You need a kimono or one of those Egyptian man dresses instead of shorts, esp in UK sweaty summer

Paul Fargher

Would Mick Hucknall promote Fiat's new orange or red colour?

Andy Laurence

My parents bought a gently used MB 230 TE (W124) estate back in the 90s in that German taxi ivory with a dark green cloth interior - the most relaxing colour combination ever, which suited the car‘s leisurely performance perfectly. The first owner was from the Barnstaple area, and I‘ve always imagined he (or indeed she, or even they) must have been laid back to the point of horizontality.

Timothy Jones

Beat me to it, dammit!

In 2003 I had a Morgan 4/4 built. For an extra £200 you could get it sprayed in any colour in the ICI paintbox. I spent ages choosing. I got it down to three colours, and I bought spraycans of each, and sprayed some scrap aluminium to get an idea. I settled on Rolls Royce Claret, there was a Porsche red, and another one, I don’t remember now. It looked the business in that red.

Chris Rayner

Superb. I laughed like a bastard at that 808 remix of the closing theme, much to the amusement of those in the car next to me whilst stuck in traffic.

Paul Renowden

The colour issue is the cost of colour. Go to any configurator and look at the cost of interesting colours. It the manufacturer.

Mark Winson-Pearce

On the lease car / colour thing - I used to audit a large leasing firm. Prices did generally take into account the impact of colour on resale value - in fact, when using the company’s configurator, you would often find the price would drop if you took a metallic option (as higher RV) especially on higher value cars. Difficult to get RVs right in all cases so in some instances it was an educated guess.

Ed Storer

The Baff / Barth show is the 'Baff/Barth Festival of Motoring'

John Hammond

Which day did you go? I went along on the Saturday

Bruce Driffill

Ah yes, I did. Richard

Did Rich mean the Bath Motoring Festival?

I'm off to play shot master.

Paul Carrack was the lead singer for magic mike and the mechanics and he wrote the living years about his dad. Carrack is also from Sheffield and wears funny hats. He also sang Tempted by Squeeze and did this wonderful bit of 70s middle of the road stuff. https://youtu.be/DP5DflRasOk More hard hitting updates from little known Sheffield musicians at the same time next week.

Well I'm going to be disappointed if the next Intercooler Podcast episode doesn't mention Andrew Frankel's loose scrotum at Le Mans Classic. Also, I feel Jonny's Miami Vice revolution has gone further than originally thought, this is due to the fact that American rap artist Curren$y has released a new EP called 'Vices', the EP is full of Miami Vice references and samples, and I reckon Curren$y is a secret S&S listener.

The colour issue comes down to cars being treated as appliances now. Smeg made a business of offeing an average fridge at a premium price because you can have it in any colour, which is what I guess Fiat is going for. Otherwise how many people do you know with an american style double door fridge in anything other than stainless steel? Or the hob set in neither polished black or polished metal. Same with cars, people who buy the function of transportation rather than cars couldnt care less. I personally quite like flat lightish green, sort of like what the royal parks rangers have. But for the family wagon went with an elaborate brown/red colour which was sharply discountinued because 5 people bought it. Also from the production point of view having two subtly different shades of gray is no differned to having deep purple and vivid yellow.

Sergey Baskakov

I’m sure Matt LeBlanc would happily introduce a fetching non-metallic white for Fiat.

Great cast Gents, started strong with tips and tricks to deal with excessive ball baggage, then you rather let yourself down with a solid 30 minutes about cars. Great 808 additions to the closing theme though.

Graham Dallas

Whoops … typing on my phone without my glasses on. 😁

Ed Nicholson

What about the Camaro? 😆

Mark Sheridan

Jonny, I recommend Wrangler Authentics stretch cargo shorts they are pretty indestructible.

david marden

Regarding German colours, kudos to BMW and their infinite shades of blue.

Alejo Rossia

Most common car ad mispelling we see here in North America is “CAMERO” instead of Camsro.
