Podcast 160 - Live from Bristol
Added 2023-05-21 17:00:03 +0000 UTCLast Friday night Jonny and Richard were in Britain's most '90s city for a live podcast recording. You probably knew that. Maybe you were there. If so, thanks ever so much for coming. If you weren't there, this is (some of) what happened.
No show notes this week because we're knackered from Friday night but here are a few links;
Don't forget, there are still tickets available for the second London live recording on Thursday 8 June. See here for details

2023-06-01 10:39:56 +0000 UTCCelebrity car news. Paul Potts, winner of Britain’s Got Talent, drives a Peugeot 5008 which failed its MoT last week because the front tyres had insufficient tread depth at 1.4mm.

2023-05-25 11:03:36 +0000 UTCAfter some (probably too much) thinking, I've decided that I need to build a scale replica of the Bristol Cars sign and set up controls to randomly have letters fail. Should be fun.

2023-05-24 07:59:55 +0000 UTCIf memory serves, the plane in this case was an Embraer 170.

2023-05-23 18:04:57 +0000 UTCI only saw the Dodge based ones as Nottingham City Transport ran them in the village where I grew up. I couldn't comment on the driving experience but I do remember that all the interior panels used to rattle and vibrate, especially at idle.

2023-05-23 11:06:20 +0000 UTCThanks for a great evening! A few coincidences. 1.) I’ve owned both a 2CV and until recently a Saab 9-5 estate. What kind of face do I have? 2.) I live near the donkey sanctuary. 3.) Most interestingly, my secondary school in Leicester used to use Beaver Buses for the school runs. Weirdly one of their double decker’s had a full height mural across the back depicting what can only be described as a pouting semi-naked lady beaver and underneath their famous strap line ‘ride the beaver’. Class.
Stephen Robinson
2023-05-23 09:51:22 +0000 UTCThe Beaver was available on several different chassis' including the Iveco Daily, Mercedes 700/800 range and the Renault Dodge S-series. The Dodges were truly awful things to drive.

2023-05-23 08:48:23 +0000 UTCRe "grot mags in cars" story, many years ago I was helping my friend Jack find a decent used Honda Civic as his "new" car. One of the viewings was at the home of an Asian chap in Slough, and when we arrived we did the usual poking about under the bonnet, checking of panel gaps etc. When I opened the hatchback and lifted up the carpet to check the spare wheel / look for leaks or accident damage I was a bit surprised to see quite a large collection of "Asian Babe" magazines secreted under there. Being a man of the world, I made a bit of a joke of the situation, but the seller could only stand there looking shocked and said - "but this is my wife's car." We left him standing by the open boot, looking shocked, and went and found a nicer car elsewhere. I do wonder what the back story was, though...

2023-05-23 07:37:47 +0000 UTCThe Bristol cars sign is now owned by Neil Clifford (often on the collecting cars podcast). He had it painstakingly restored by artisan craftsman… but also has a switch so he can choose whether it says BISTO ARS

2023-05-22 19:23:39 +0000 UTCSheffield had the first bendibuses in the UK, back in 1979. Five MANs which were followed by Danish built 'Leyland DAB' articulated buses delivered in the early 1980s (before the Beaver minibuses). They were the only such Leylands to be imported into the UK. One of the Leyland DABs exists in the grounds of a friend's place in Devon, but is far from roadworthy these days. https://sheffielder.net/2020/03/09/bendy-buses/
John Hammond
2023-05-22 17:33:25 +0000 UTCBack in the early 90's my dad worked for a company that built small buses as a subsidiary of Plaxton. They made one based on a Dodge Renault chassis and it was called the Reeves-Burgess Beaver! I suppose in Leicestershire you would have been able to "catch the Beaver-Beaver".

2023-05-22 15:24:23 +0000 UTCI was always told it was because the 52 route they ran on went via Beaver Hill between Woodhouse and Handsworth. I went to Beaver Hill School.

2023-05-22 08:28:20 +0000 UTCThe 'Eager Beavers' got their name because the bodywork fitted onto the Dodge chassis was the Plaxton 'Beaver' design. https://flic.kr/p/eittC4

2023-05-22 05:29:21 +0000 UTCWe used to have Eager Beavers. They were effing useless. More like a minibus, which was really useful for the mass amount of kids who went to schools along the 10 mile route, the people who still had a job in Sheffield but utterly useless if you had a pram, were disabled or needed to carry a double handled Ikea bag. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t04822&prevUrl= It was after this cock up we decided bendibuses were the future. Opposite where that photo is taken was the Crazy Daisy where the Human League got it back together after the other two left to form BEF and Heaven 17.

2023-05-22 04:31:48 +0000 UTCIt’s 90’s week, so you have to record it onto cassette tape if you want to listen to it offline. Don’t forget to pause it when you flip the tape!

2023-05-21 23:42:12 +0000 UTCI knew it sounded familiar, I do enjoy a Gorman story so it’s no wonder I latched on to these two flutes. Dave’s experiment with posting money is my favourite, to link with the Royal Mail chat.

2023-05-21 22:08:23 +0000 UTCAs I said to Jonny in the interval, a Beaver is a type of bus. It was a minibus built by Plaxton on various mid range van chassis cowls. In Sheffield in the early 1990s they had Dodge minibuses with the Beaver body and they were branded as 'Eager Beavers'. https://madannie.smugmug.com/Buses/South-Yorkshire/Sheffield-in-the-1990s/i-n7dmLMW

2023-05-21 20:12:12 +0000 UTCVery enjoyable evening, as always. The 2CV story reminded me of this Dave Gorman episode about finding and trying to dispose of a stash of mucky mags: https://youtu.be/5CjiQ11bSWc
