Podcast 158 - Drift car or donkey?
Added 2023-05-07 17:00:03 +0000 UTCJonny has been served some unusual Instagram content and Richard has seen his local no-name mountain bike guy. Also in this episode, reaction to last week’s Miami Vice chat, Don Johnson goes Woollarding, the Skoda cake we forgot, how to say Rostyle, disagreement about the third generation Toyota MR2, spending time in a high tech scrapyard, a broken Smart Roadster Brabus, CSI hot cross buns, an annoying Volkswagen, for the love of small cars, and news of a Smith and Sniff live show in London.

Was the No name full suspension bike guy of bath hanging around the Green Park area? When I was at uni there 20 something years ago they used to fill the old station with market stalls and there was a sweet sweet old couple who used to have sell drug paraphernalia including coke hoovers and bongs and incessantly tried to keep the local school kids from buying said items. It’s now gone up market with nice sheds. Probably on the back of future publishing using that an area as a background for the YouTube content.

2023-05-13 11:57:15 +0000 UTCOn the subject of the Mk3 MR2, I must bang the drum for the small but worthwhile population of those that have received the Celica 2ZZ swap, which also removes the precat issue and turns it into an actually livable Elise alternative. Be careful with gearbox selection though; the original MR2 5-speed is too widely spaced to keep it the engine in "lift" (because it's technically not VTEC). The available 6-speed boxes are closer-ratio but either end up with a buzzy cruising 6th (4k RPM at 80 mph), or have a taller final drive but don't allow you to have as much high-revving fun at legal speeds.

2023-05-08 19:51:08 +0000 UTCThanks to last week I’m now heavily into Miami Vice – a show I LOVED as a youngster! So much so that I must be in the minority of fans who noticed the Daytona swapped out for a car without pop-up headlamps…

2023-05-08 19:50:17 +0000 UTCI took some leftover hot cross buns and made this recipe for bread and butter pudding. Absolutely banging https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/discover/food/recipes/cakes-bakes-desserts/hot-cross-bun-bread-and-butter-pudding

2023-05-08 14:26:02 +0000 UTCThere’s been much chatter over the ‘casts covering all manner of 80s auto-centric TV dramas. One that’s always missed is “Hardcastle & McCormick”. No love for the Coyote X?

2023-05-08 13:37:59 +0000 UTCListening to Richard's experience with the ID.5 Automatic braking / enforced safety systems, they are such a huge killer of any confidence in the car. You end up driving more on edge and spending brain power and attention on what the car might do incorrectly that you need to second guess and correct, I'm just not sure how much safer they really are! The handful of times I've driven a Tesla model 3 it has consistently had a panic attack about a wagon or a Luton van either coming the other way on a bend or just in another lane on the same carriageway. My Peugeot e208's lane centring seems to pull towards wagons on multi-lane roads (and of course just disengages at will, usually in a slight bend where you need to be on it to catch and prevent a lane drift) rendering it near useless as a 'driver assist'. I hate the idea that some of these systems are on by default and need turning off every time. It's an instant No when looking a whether a car might be one I'm interested in, no matter how good the rest of the car is

2023-05-08 11:07:48 +0000 UTCI reckon you'd get a Gardner marine diesel to start after 20 years, even with toffee oil. I've never known a series of engines take such shit and yet carry on running, albeit often smoking more than 'no name MB guy'.

2023-05-08 10:01:44 +0000 UTCRe: Dutch barges - they’re not all cold and smelly. My uncle’s got a restored 1920s barge which now has proper central heating! And there’s no diesel stink if your engine room’s sealed properly. Well prepped barges are actually very civilised.

2023-05-07 22:01:50 +0000 UTCI'm in deep with Miami Vice, all thanks to Johnny's recommendation. On the car side of things, I winced at the sparks flying off the Daytona when it bottoms out at speed. No mechanical sympathy there. The soundtrack is bloody amazing- Russ Ballard is a new one for me.

2023-05-07 19:29:29 +0000 UTCListen, guys, great cast as always. I can confirm, you can roll a cigarette whilst going none-handed on a bicycle. it was a popular thing when I was 16/17 prior to getting a car.

2023-05-07 19:05:06 +0000 UTCI've always been told that Brian Adams' Series IIA was one he'd had before he "made it" and was his band gear hauling motor. Once he'd got a bit more money he bought the 90 but I think kept the IIA.
