Show notes 156

What have we got in the show notes this week? Well, we start with Jonny looking furtive in a Bentley for reasons that will become clear. Then we have the Biro and Canta small cars, as seen by Jonny in Amsterdam. After that, the Maturo Stradale restomodded Integrale followed by the Lego piece its gearlever resembles and a period ad for the Strada Abarth 130TC. Finally, there’s the line-up of sweet, sweet Bentley heritage fleet cars from which Jonny and Richard chose the Brooklands and disgraced entertainer spec Arnage. Now some links…

I received my stickers! Great stuff!

You bastards - I've been looking at Bentley Arnages all week now and I may actually buy one. You need locking up for this.

Andrew Jones

Surely that's time-travelling Jason Plato amongst the Bentleys in that last photo..?

I remember when they were £40 grand! If I had the money though…

Guys. I had a Strada Abarth 130TC in 1997. It is without doubt, the best drivers car I’ve owned (along with an ‘85 Alfa GTV6 and my current Alpine A110). I miss the visceral rawness of that car - the noise and its single-minded simplicity, when the competition all seemed like cosseting compromises. I miss the gauges, the gurgling carbs, the squeaky clutch pedal and ‘that’ gear-lever. Sadly, I had to sell it as I was watching it disintegrate in front of my eyes. One day, I noticed the offside A pillar trim was adrift. So I removed it with a view to replacing it properly, only to be met with an A pillar that was akin to a stalagmite and stalactite of rotting Italian steel, barely meeting in the middle. I quickly put the trim back on and put the car up for sale. I got good money for it and bought myself a Camaro IROC-Z which was great!! The Strada is still on the road and still owned by the person I sold it to, 25 years ago. I would definitely have another, as long at it was a an absolute minter! Richard … that grey one on Car and Classic hasn’t got the U.K. spec Recaro seats, which are a must in a 130TC. Now, I ask you … “Go find another!!!” 😂

13k for a birò! Four Forks sake!

That's the one! I'm currently working out an excuse to go down to LA and five it a go. A friend up here put a Kawi ZX10R in the middle of a 1990s Mini and converted it to RWD and it was amazing. Loudest thing ever.

The white one Matt Farah drove a few years ago for smoking tire? That thing looked like a riot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU4bIsdnbkM

All this talk of motorcycle-engined cars: everyone on my socials was losing their minds this weekend over a VFR800-powered Honda N600 spotted at a LA Cars and Coffee (held at 2:14 am). No reverse gear, but 12000 rpm and 115hp in a little biscuit tin of a car.

I saw all you hack slackers in the Bentleys and wondered where you were off to.... ! You really should have watched more of the racing, it was the best! Especially the Edwardian stuff...never really been interested until spoke to Mark Walker in his Darracq... What a team what a car frightening to drive no doubt, but Mark is such a down to earth competitor, could will be an excellent late brake show feature

For the Ohlins challenge race, a 1962 Corvette with the fuel-injected 360 bhp V8. With a suitable paint job. Obvs.

Chris Rayner

As a recent joint purchaser or a pillar less coupe with sunroof that is operated by the Grande Air button, I have to agree there is nothing quite like it. From cars and classics obvs.

And if you thought £20K a bit ambitious how about 250K? https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1240081

For exotic upright bicycles you need to go to Denmark. https://stroudtimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/DSC01978.jpg

Twist or bunch better than getting hit with a baseball bat in the nether regions... :-D

Certainly in the mk1, the semi-auto 'Twingo Easy' had a very Lego inspired gear stick. https://a.cyphoma.net/uploads/image_uploader/2017/6/1/22/593077ed28e8c04fa6006519/big_593077ed28e8c04fa6006519.jpg

“Getting their panties in a twist”, Richard? Ok, I will let you off with using the word “panties” *shudders* as you’re married to an American but, as I always understood it, panties were always got(ten) “in a bunch”, whereas it’s yer KNICKERS that get “in a twist”. Utter pedantry on my part, I know, but I kinda feel I’m in a safe space to indulge it. That does feel better now, thank you

All the Fiat Stradas at WSM (on the coast) rusted within away months of touching the sand.

Andrew

There is one of those silly little cars parked up most days around the corner from where I work. They look like a death trap.

Yep! Looked like this! https://i.pinimg.com/736x/41/67/ca/4167cac5804719aaf3bc7b8955023c9c.jpg

Pretty sure my mum's Fiat 127 had a v similar gearstick.
