Podcast 153 - Struggling to care about a new Lamborghini

Richard isn't bothered about the Aventador replacement and Jonny has been hanging out with Gordon Murray. Also in this episode, collecting Rileys on your deathbed, unexpectedly strong beer in Wagamama, Gloria Estefan’s car sounds, starting work on Boring Car Trivia 4, the word Superfast, what Italian car names sound like if you’re Italian, the underrated excellent of the facelifted Triumph 2000, men with autojumble hair, wearing only clothes you bought at an autojumble, the Pembleton T24, and have you ever owned a five cylinder car?

Comments

Prince Andrew had a Minor so I've heard

John Hammond

Nah, sounds unlikely to me

Adam

I once had a Ford Fiesta Van that we called Gloria. Gloria Fiestavan, without the Miami Sound Machine, more the unrelenting screams of a Ford 1.3 ohv sounding machine. It was rinsed within an inch of its life as was the way with underpowered and overloaded works vans of the early 1990s.

e Boring car trivia 4: I heard a rumour once that Princess Anne had a Reliant Scimitar? Probably false but maybe check

There are quite a few V8 Triumphs around. A company called Del Lines did quite a few: https://www.practicalclassics.co.uk/articles/restoration-projects/resto-hero-triumph-stag-estate/ https://silodrome.com/ferguson-formula-triumph-2500pi-estate-4x4/ https://www.aronline.co.uk/news/news-4x4-triumph-2500pi-on-sale-in-switzerland/ https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/auctions/what-the-doctor-ordered-triumph-2500-pi-estate-4x4/ Other cars are available...

P.S. Splendid episode gents, I listened while reassembling parts of said G60 and chuckling in the spray shop where it currently resides post break in. Modern Lamborghinis? Meh.

Our neighbours have a high spec Mk4 golf V5 (170hp?). It’s a VR6 with a cylinder missing, and sounds lovely, especially as the (nearly retired) couple have just fitted it with a full stainless system. I think they’ve had it since new, and it causes them fewer problems than their newer Golf that they bought to replace it. This might be in part due to the money that my wife and I clandestinely spent on it in the period of a couple of weeks… A couple of years ago when some toerags decided to try and steal my G60 Corrado, we were carless (the head gasket in the AX having given up a couple of weeks prior to this). Our neighbours very kindly gave us the keys to the V5 saying that they didn’t use it much and we’d be doing them a favour. The noise was glorious (and as a previous VR6 Corrado owner, quite familiar). The fuel economy was eye watering, probably not helped by the Lambda sensor light that came on while they had lent us their pride and joy. Arse. There followed some panicked research into replacement sensors (the one that was the most difficult to get at was the one that was faulty of course…). Luckily, they dropped into conversation that ‘it was always doing that, and not to worry.’ Crisis averted, we continued to drive it (lovely) until the next day when it nearly spat us off a roundabout in an uncontrolled manner, then felt very woolly to steer. The ball joint had thrown its toys out of the pram, so an emergency trip to the mechanic was in order. He discovered that this might have been caused by the mismatched springs (also knackered), so those were replaced as well. You don’t borrow a car then give it back knackered…. Several hundred pounds lighter, but with the car now able to corner properly, we continued to use it for another couple of days, until it started misfiring. Coil packs this time…3 out of the 5 needed replacing in the end. All done with smiles and chats with the neighbours about how nice it was to have a car that was such a lovely thing to own/drive. I think we put about £700 into it over the period of a few weeks. Then the central locking started playing up…. I’m afraid by that point, the AX was ready, and we confessed to the electrical gremlins having appeared, and handed the car back slightly traumatised by the overall experience, swearing never to borrow it again. It still sounds glorious mind, and seems to have been faultless since.

an excellent cast ....please consider having jonny's brother as a guest

I've had two 5 cyl cars, a Fiat Coupé 20v and an Alfa 159 2.4 JTD. I loved both of them

John Hammond

I (along with many other people) own a 5-cyl car…… it is diesel though so probably doesn’t count.. XC70 D5

Adam

Yes!! thank you Johnny for calling out on the over-use of the word “super”… it properly gets my goat. “Oh I’m super-excited” or “super interested”…. Are you, are really?! you sure you’re not just “very” excited? cockwombles!

Question/possible trivia for BCT4. My car obsession started when my Uncle Graham Neish had the 6R4 he co-drove for David Gillanders taken round to my parents house in late 1985. I have pictures of a 10 year old me in the drivers seat. Now my question is. The next Rally car I recall seeing at Mr Gillanders garage was a Montego. Was this an official Group A offering from Austin Rover?

Alistair Neish

I remember when my Sis had kids, they went to a place to have their 3 door car fitted with kiddie seats, the person said see you in a couple months.. and in a couple months they were back with a 4 door car to have car seats fitted.

I'd love to know the backstory of how we've ended up with two makers of retro 3-wheeled sports cars in worcestershire. Presumably someone felt it was time to take the corporate giant of Morgan down a peg or two. Perhaps a Ferrari-Lamborghini situation, but with an Elgar soundtrack.

Rich Tysoe

Great show, listened on my Monday evening commute (in NZ) which included a grocery shop stop at the supermarket and someone thinking I was laughing at Muesli in aisle 2...

Robin Capper

I saw a snippet on the socials today about a 2500Pi estate converted to 4x4 by Ferguson Developments as a development mule. I can't find the post now.

John Hammond

Saw a BlowMotion hand dryer yesterday, never saw one of those before and I couldn't help but wonder what smutty comments these two flutes would have about the name. Rich was too late to Defender ownership to have a Td5, I'm not a fan of that engine because of its various known issues but it can make a much nicer sound than the Traaaaaaansit engine in the 2007-2015 models.

Matt Tester

Brilliant podcast. My apologies to the truck driver who was following me near Knutsford as I suddenly dived for a layby due to my hysterics from your post end credits chat. I was struggling to see where I was going so grabbed at the chance to get off the road but it was a bit last minute and resulted in quite a lot of horn from the Cockerill transport HGV. Soz - but I blame the Pendleton T24 ad.

AL Dickens

Highly entertaining as always. As usual listened whilst shaving. Had to hang on to the sink during the outro conversation 😂😂

Marc

I used to own a V50 T5 auto for about 6 months because it bankrupted me in fuel. Also the ride was like sitting on paving slabs. Cool car though. Driving up and down the A41 most people seemed to think I was undercover police.

Giovanni Michelotti also designed the original Leyland National bus for British Leyland. Even 50 years on, it's still a good clean design. In the mid 1970s he was hired in by Duple to restyle the 'Dominant' coach range and that's another favourite of mine. I've always thought a 2000/2500 estate upgraded with the 5 spoke Stag alloy wheels and the 3.0 V8 upfront would be a lovely thing to own.

John Hammond

Question for Jonny - is an Insight good for transporting kids? Does it have isofix in the back? I was thinking of getting a simple EV for the school and sport clubs run but would rather get a car that has aready been made 10+ years ago so no production emissions and it can drive for weeks on a few drops of dino juice.

Sergey Baskakov

OK I was giggling pretty hard during the outro

Ed Nicholson

In the early 2000s my company had a number of company cars, including a couple of spare ones. This was around the time when company car tax changed and it made it almost necessary to have a diesel. I had my A4 TDi thank you, but there was a Lexus IS200 and VW Bora V5 basically used as pool cars. The V5 (originally specced and ordered by a guy who passed away suddenly) was horrific on fuel, especially if you drove is as all pool cars should be driven, IIRC you could get it in the high 20s. Also, my Father had a '74 Triumph 2000TC Mk2 in Powder Blue, a beautiful car which had replaced his sick dog of a V4 Fowds Zephyr Mk IV. When the Trumpet eventually began to shit the bed on a regular basis he replaced it with an SD1 3500.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't give a monkeys about the new Lambo Revolver. Although judging by the bashing I got when I commented on it, it seems as though there's a lot of people that do. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

George Wade

Had an 850 T5 when I was 21 and loved the 5 cyl noise, then later, when I sold a perfectly nice Mercedes CLS for a 1948 Chevy pickup, I realised I couldn’t really use it as a daily driver so bought a very cheap Bora V5 as a stop gap. Fitted a cheap Halfords cone filter I had lying about and it sounded incredible. Shame it was a thirsty and gutless heap of crap though 😂

Mark Sheridan

I'm fitting a V5 into my B3 Passat estate at the moment, hopefully it will be on the road in a couple of months. I had a Disco Td5 a few years ago which made a surprisingly nice noise 👍

Sam Houghton

Started Listening to this just as I was having a wazz, so struggled to get the volume right ;)
