Right then, in pictures this week we have the erroneous mk3 Granada from The Gold, followed by bonus it’s-too-early-for-the-facelift Orion action. Then we have the influencer Zeus and more from Stellantis Instagram hob-nobber Olivier Francois featuring kestrel-faced and possibly quite funny singer, Michael Bolton.
Speaking of modified cars I know of a hand-built clio that a guys spent years building could be one for the late brake show or your podcast

On the subject of cars in popular media. Theres two cracking Volvo's and an incompetent Land Rover Defender in the new Luther movie, on that side of things.

Watching The Gold it amused me that the car was yet they’d gone to great lengths to ensure all the number plates had the correct pre-2001 Charles Wright font… something that most productions get wrong!

My parents had a 1975 Ford Thunderbird. 27' long and 2.5 tons. a 460 CI V-8 with a 4-barrell carb and almost no power. It was notorious for the cruise control sticking. I think all the vacuum powered systems did. When I bought my 1983 240D a few years back I promptly removed the remaining vestiges of the cruise control from it. With so little vacuum to begin with, I cannot imagine sharing it with cruise control.

On the '50 Cent side of things' (OT50CSOT), I seem to remember the title of that track was originally "Ayo Pornography" rather than "technology" and it was changed. Explains some of the lyrics and the video. Either it's true, or I've made that up following a fever dream.

My wife also does not like mobile fair rides. She wants to know she will get hurt SAFELY!
I grew up in Michigan. No MOT and no emissions checks. I am not saying that is a good thing but at the time I didn't really think anything of it. Had to buy thicker carpet to cover up the hole in the floor of my Triumph Spitfire and thought straight-piping passed the catalytic converters on my Firebird was OK.... I wouldn't do that today mind you.

R.e. Stuck on cruise control, my wife’s Uncle discovered the cruise control would not disengage on his Nissan Qashqai as he was approaching a roundabout at the end of a dual carriageway where he had been ‘cruising’ at a leisurely 65mph.
He assures me 65mph does not feel leisurely when approaching a roundabout. Fortunately it was very early morning so traffic was light but the cruise did not disengage until he had mounted the roundabout, he then continued all the way over the top of it and embedded the shonky Nissan in the entrance of a garden centre.
The car was written off so to replace it he bought another brand new Qashqai because “it looked after me well in the crash” completely overlooking the fact that it caused the bloody crash in the first place.

The first thing I noticed about the fake plates on the MK3 Granny were that they were a Somerset area issue. Although early press cars were on B regs, I can't imagine many mk3s were B reg. There were quite a number of Mk2 Granadas which were C registered, having hung around waiting to be sold.

I managed about thirty seconds of that awful Fiddy track - so bad even the promise of a scantily clad Lotus couldn't get me to the end. Good show otherwise though.

Talking of early concept cars featuring in period dramas, there was a very fetching 1972 Allegro panda car in this week’s Endeavour.

Exactly the same - I spotted the Granada in a heartbeat (my Dad had a C reg Ghia as a company car and I thought it was the bollocks) but my wife just told me off for "spoiling it". They just don't get it do they? 😂

I just realised that Fiddy totally missed a trick with that Lotus being AU instead of AO plate, AO is Norwich and where my dad's Freelander 2 came from. Before that I hadn't realised that the letter O and the number 0 are used together in car registrations and that they look the same on the plate.

For my money, The Crown’s biggest ana-car-chronism was in a 1995-set scene, where we saw Princess Diana in her Audi 80 Cabriolet being hassled by the occupants of a silver Toyota Avensis. The Avensis, as all fans of New Labour company car spec motors know, is a car that didn’t even go on sale until Oct 1997, over a month after HRH PD was dead. More embarrassing than smearing Elizabeth Arden on a frostbitten todger.

While I realize the amount of car content has to be carefully balanced against tortoise husbandry tips and steam-powered marital aids, perhaps next ep John Dodds' "The Beast" might be a topic? Wondering if either of you came across it in your careers etc, and it's up for sale at your sponsor ockshun site.

Killed the police officer in 1985, killed Stephen Cameron in 1996 and escaped abroad. Interestingly the witness to the 1996 murder was also killed. Reportedly a freemason with lots of corrupt cops in his pocket who tipped him off repeatedly to avoid detection and arrest. A really, really bad person.

The Volvo 740 in The Gold was also wearing a V Reg plate when the very earliest were at least a Y Reg. Really made me wince....

Great episode ! Growing up in the Gulf my Dad had an array of interesting American cars as his Company vehicle. One was a 1979 Chrysler New Yorker 5th Avenue and the cruise control on that stuck on during a desert highway blast between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I recall my Dad getting quite anxious as we were (for an american car) going at some speed - probably about 90 mph which is roughly terminal velocity given the modestly sized 5.9 litre V8. I think after jabbing the brakes for what seemed like an eternity and trying to manually turn it off the dodgy electrics seemed to finally wake up and disengage the cruise control. No doubt it probably also deployed the car light shrouds at the same time....

Want to read the book about "Kenny" Noye, but don't really need to se the real details. Did he kill someone? Police officer on his property + young man in 'road rage' attack? Have not finished Gold yet, so hope they do add some reality to Robin Hood representation.
Loving the Grandad, would have surely been as good a cast as police had back then. Too early for Costain / Duckworth method of hotting up pursuit cars.

There's a pub in a coastal Norfolk town I've been visiting for years that until recently always had an old Cavalier in the car park. Also I'm completely distracted by Olivier Francois's use of 'artisanal' in that Instagram post.

I've not started listening yet (a Monday morning tradition) but I'm pleased I'm not the only one that spotted the Granada!
My wife just rolls hers eyes when I mention stuff like this now, especially when pointing out a post 2001 font reg plate on a show set earlier. 🤣
