Show notes 148

Hello again. Sorry about the lack of show notes last week. There wasn’t much to share we didn’t do one. But now we’re back with, in order, Jonny’s tortoises trying some post-hibernation getting it on, the Merc W126 wheels Richard was thinking of, the Merc W126 wheels Jonny was actually referring to, a modified W126 with obligatory 1980s over-complicated stereo, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond in a holiday shirt (trousers, not pictured), James frontman Tim Booth in some pretty baggy strides, and the new(ish) Honda Civic. Finally, we have a picture of listener Damien's South African cruise control test track.

Jonny forgot to say that Take My Breath Away co-writer Tom Whitlock died recently. Ferrari story is here in this obituary.

I hope there was a reserve on that Dodge Dart. Ockshon finished at £13,000!

Back in a previous life as an airport valet driver one of the various quirks and features we learnt to look for were a certain era of Honda Civics had the then normal Honda arrangement of a main cruise control switch (for complete system on and off) and an easily prodded resume button. These were particularly unique in that even after an engine off situation on restarting the resume button would still engage cruise at the last saved speed (usually motorway speeds) and would often try to launch you straight for whatever was in front of you.

Yes along with Wendens Ambo Diamond Mining Corp and Anal Conway dirty Apartheid accounting LLP. Or simply "I haven't shot a Rhino in years"

#buzznussuntrusts needs to go on some merch

Oh.... the "Resume" button has a whole new sinister context if it could actually resume V-max reverse when you were expecting a relaxed dual carriageway entry!

Go on yersel

I feel this needs to be discussed in the next pod... https://www.carandclassic.com/auctions/1972-john-dodds-the-beast-8bEqL4

Reverseing in cruise control works in my Saab 9-5! I tried it an empty car park going very slowly and it seemed to engage, I'll try navigate home in cruise and reverse like the fella with the BMW 7 series!

Eoin Donoghue

You need to publish that Stellantis content to Spotify. It's been living rent free in my head the whole day!

Matt Hausmann

Having listened and now seen, I cannot agree that the test track is "wide". That really doesn't look nearly wide enough for a sudden reverse steer lurch/palming madness/instant wiper moment. Excellent work.

Daniel Smith

It felt like Richard was going to touch on this, but in further poorly-maintained 1980s supercar-music crossovers, Claudio Zampolli (off of the Cizeta-Moroder V16T) used to service both Eddie Van Halen's Miura - the car you hear revving on Panama - and Sammy Hagar's 512BB. When David Lee Roth was out as the band's singer, Claudio introduced Sammy to the Van Halen brothers. Claudio shows up in the video for I Can't Drive 55. I will also just mention, re: Civic, that the car you're really missing out on is the Acura Integra. It's basically just a nice Civic with a genuine Manuel 'box, but not full-send like the Type-R.

Brendan McAleer

A friend in college had an affinity for Subaru because they started production at their plant here in the States on the day he was born (which also happens to be Sept. 11).

Luke Partin

Happy belated-belated birthday Jonny! Great pod as always. I really enjoyed the euro-dance like and subcribe tune at the end. By the way, if my French is not too rubish, I believe that the DS's version is called "Decapotable" and not "Decapitable"... But I enjoyed the play on words with the French Revoltution's delidding of aristocrats process... Keep the coming gents!

nmdelgado_81

Minor point but it's a soprano saxophone in Captain Of Her Heart rather than an oboe or clarinet

Gordon Segar

My first car was a '76 Firebird (last of the 2 headlight versions) which is the same birth year as my wife... My Dad and I rebuilt it together only for me to catapult it off a high bank turn at 50 mph and roll it in the air twice before landing on the roof with very sharp rock protruding only 6 inches from my head.... He didn't talk to me for 3 months... Then I bought '72 Triumph Spitfire! Safety first! :-D

Richard Major

Dick Sargent also played 'Sheriff Grady Byrd' on the Dukes of Hazzard. A short lived role replacing the 'Sherriff Rosco' actor James Best during some of his contractual dispute absence from the show.

John Hammond

Oddly in Bewitched Dick 2 was meant to be the original Darren but was unavailable. So Dick 1 was brought in until a long term back injury made it difficult for him to work. Then Dick 2 came in.

MedicalFlyer

For reverse cruise antics I suspect a much older vehicle would be needed. I'm sure all modern systems would lock it out to prevent accidentally launching yourself backwards. Maybe something late 80's, or even earlier where it simply pulls on the throttle without any computer involved. Or some sort of half bodged after market system.

MedicalFlyer

Actually Larry Hagman (J.R. Ewing) was on I Dream of Jeannie, and Bewitched featured a pair of Dicks (York, then Sargent). Presumably the theory at the time was that you could replace an actor in the same part provided they shared the same first name. In the US, we have CVT Civics without hybrid, but I don't know whether they are "shift-able" via the paddles on the wheel. I seem to recall a dealer loaner in the previous gen that did. I currently drive a '22 Si, and the manual shifter is superb!

Kevin Perham

My first car was a 1974 Dart 4 door with a slant 6. I got it for my birthday in 1980 and it was already full of rust. I kept it for about 3 years and had to replace the rear axel installed new berings on the drive shaft and replaced the starter twice. The springs on the driver side of the front seat also rusted and broke. It was not my favorite car.

Bill

I still have a complete overcomplicated Clarion G80 system in a box somewhere.. complete with 4 power amplifiers and a balance joystick.. Now I need to find a car to put it in...

More shella for the fella
