Podcast 146 - Live from Lotus
Added 2023-02-12 18:00:03 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard bring their meandering, asinine nonsense to the swanky Brand Centre at the Lotus factory in Norfolk.
Topics covered include the Lotus Emira, a strange smelling friend, developments in hand dryers, the Ineos Grenadier, the weight of car doors, Norfolk's many hand written signs, ploughing competitions, the fightiness of pubs with pool tables, door pocket problems, wine carrier cars, the surprisingly nice Genesis G80, an idea for snacks on the road, well-cleaned number plates, getting disorientated in motorway service areas, 999 call etiquette, window cleaner cars, and is Sir Jim Ratcliffe going to buy everything?
Thanks to everyone at Lotus Cars for hosting this episode.

As the owner of a 5 door AX I can confirm that I've had to get inventive with where to put the wine (rear passenger footwell is a favourite)

2023-02-14 07:52:34 +0000 UTCI once jammed a bottle of red wine into the seat/back fold gap of a Fiat Uno 45s to stop it rolling around. Left the car parked in the sun and later removed a completely empty bottle. Expected a boot full of red but the cork must have eased out in the heat, the bottle decanted through the boot carpet (small red stain), into the wheel well and out the drain hole. Hardly any sign it had happened. (Laughed as was thinking Citroën AX before it was said!)

2023-02-13 22:09:51 +0000 UTCI could be wrong here... (always an iffy opening gambit) but the reason for the taller glass comes from Land Rovers desire in the late 70's to sell the upcoming 110 abroad where there was legislation around viewing angles from the drivers seat to see overhead traffic lights. It was then also realised it was rather beneficial for proper off roading.

2023-02-13 20:25:31 +0000 UTCFair enough, it does a tiny bit but the rain gutter manages to be level all the way round so it's less obvious. Richard

2023-02-13 20:24:42 +0000 UTCThe front cupholders in the current RAV4 are the perfect size and depth for a bottle of wine, and you can almost pretend you’re driving a Manuel.

2023-02-13 10:41:54 +0000 UTCThat too. If you think about it the list of risk factors is pretty much endless. Above average number of container lorries originating at felixstowe. American military personnel attempting to drive up the wrong carriageway

2023-02-13 08:40:41 +0000 UTCQuestion to Mr Sniffpetrol - does Lotus inviting you mean they have completely turned the page on their previous CEO who has been rightly and repeatedly mocked on your website? Also, what do you think about their elecric suv?

2023-02-12 23:05:32 +0000 UTCThe A14 is almost perfectly east to west so at least half the traffic is being blinded by the sun at any time (especially in wonter with mist and dirty windscreens). Hence the crashiness. Most pleasant time to drive on it is about 2am

2023-02-12 22:09:11 +0000 UTCAnyone watching this Guy Martin program? I can't stop thinking about him claiming he runs the parts washer in his shed for 3 hours a day.... Presumably this is after he gets home from work as a diesel fitter too. What's he doing in there. Does he bathe in it? Does he miss the smell of work?

2023-02-12 20:41:02 +0000 UTCAs far as the windscreen in the Anus Grenadine goes, what's the alternative? If you bring the top of the windscreen down (old Land Rover spec) then tall people only get a nice view of the frame. If you bring the doors up then you lose the space for the alpine windows or have to cut a stupid notch out of the roof, GT40 spec, which Jonny will trap his head in. Having said that, the design is still like a slightly worse Santana. The bumpers don't look like they would win a fight with a tree and the ground clearance is eaten up by skid plates.

2023-02-12 20:18:55 +0000 UTCI bet you can fit a duty free box of Gaulioses in that AX door pocket. Check out Clive James Postcard from Paris on YouTube to see Francoise Sagan driving a freebie AX GT/Sport(?) in a… spirited manner.
