Well now, what do we have this week? We start with the side straked mullet of singer Paul King and a picture of his equally mullety band on Top of the Pops. Then we have that blue hair gel found in all ‘80s bathrooms, the glorious Tatra 603 coming up for ockshun, the sinister Tatra once driven by Richard, the Lotus with the lurid interior seen at Sunday Scramble, an Aygo X with Richard’s Panda, and a Lego 911 GT3 looking, at best, like it’s been in a horrible rollover accident.

First of all, I'm can't wrap my head around the fact that you were surprised by finding out Elite has trading in. 90% of the game was being a space trucker! In other news, you mentioned Steam Rally Wrong'un T-shirts but I can't see them on the site (only mugs and stickers). I simply must have one before the season starts in May.

Grim...

In 1950, in exchange for a shipment of wheat, about 700 Skodas and Tatras were shipped to Canada (Tatraplans, the 4cyl version, but only a couple of hundred of them). They did not sell well, partially due to the rise of McCarthyism south of the border, but you could still find them around in the 1970s, and doubtless there's a barn find or two out there. The Tatraplan in the Lane Museum is a Canadian one, and belonged to a fellow who subsequently bought and restored a couple of T87s. Same guy founded the Bowlus luxury trailer company (like an Airstream crossed with the Rocketeer's helmet, very cool and quite light), and with another local T87 owner, dipped the car's front wheels in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans over a series of long-distance roadtrips.

Brendan McAleer

Great song however better suited to angular cars such as C/W126 Mercedes or 911 Flatnose, that Tatra is too Jetsons!

Cornish Rider

Love this info about Paul King looking useful

Kev Sharp

Agree with all your points; I've owned my GTI for 4 years, it's covered 58000 miles in that time, but long journeys , although doable, are let down a bit by the seats, lack of sound deadening and boomy soundakuator thingy which makes itself known over 70mph. Still, it's a city car so I shouldn't expect too much!

Steve Williams

King were a local band to Warwick uni and played a number of low level gigs in the Students Union including one just before “Love and Pride” went ballistic in 84. They were a lovely bunch and brought a giant beach ball to the soundcheck so they could play football on stage (Paul looked ‘useful’)

Dave Smith

Had an Up GTI, cheap motoring overall as it pretty much didn't depreciate during the time I had it. There's an excuse Richard! Great driving car and good fun. A bit crashy on the road overall as it's not the most sophisticated, but driving at 10/10ths on the road is just brilliant fun. Not a car that you can have in the garage without having another car to drive longer journeys in though, IMO Try the Lego Speed Champions Lamborghini Diablo for a great little set that's nice and cheap.

Matthew Kemp

The point of the game is to exceed the budget and time scales of any restomod you care to take on!

Stephen Cooper

All these Lego cars look like dogshit. Not Lego, not a model car & just $400

Radon Racing

Restomod Project Manager '88?

Nick Davies

Thinking about how Bottas had unleashed his inner bogan and had a mullet while in Australia (that wasn't that great tbh) Has there been a decent mullet in motorsport? Have to think there was a few NASCAR drivers that rocked the look back in the day. https://twitter.com/ValtteriBottas/status/1598989919699206146

Stephen Voss

those 18" wheels look preposterous.

Zoona

As an Australian, I am frightend by the existance of Paul King.

Peter Agius

Another brilliant episode. The Repton and Grannies Garden discussion. I had Repton 3 on Arcamedes 410 and it was ace until my dad upgraded something and it never worked aagain. For Lego Technic kits agree the contrived models just don't work. The delorean ones worked. Oh and the ID Buzz have you seen how much the optional price for a toolkit and Jack? - £90. Craziness Whistly roof racks - I test drove a New Defender which for no reason had the roof rack and the side boxes and it was awfully noisy.

Robin White

True that. It's funny how everything in the naughties needed an SR20DET, now everything needs a Barra.

Stuart Baly

Those ex-cop cars with the hole in the engine to make them inoperable are just screaming for a Barra conversion

Stephen Voss

I can’t remember who deserves credit for this crack below a picture of a period Lotus ad “You know you’ve arrived in a Lotus” - “as your hands are filthy”. But to look at, I love the Elite, I think it would have been interesting if it had inspired the look of the new SUV

Jim Galbraith

Lego Creator is much better than the big 1:8 scale Technic. Ecto1, the Delorean, Vespa, VW Type 2, Mini etc all look really good. I also like Tamiya but they're different hobbies and if you think Lego is overpriced I got involved in Tamiya trucks a few years ago.. Completed trucks are changing hands for £2k plus! 🤯

Sam Houghton

Is that Balthazar Bratt from Despicable me?

Nathen Fredrick

That Lego Porker is awful!

Daniel P

The only time I’ve heard BMW 635 appear in a song is The Ballroom of Romance by Chris de Burgh. Doesn’t mention whether it was the dogleg though, OTSOT

Ed Storer

Fabulous extended Tatra advert from the 60s - they were available in a range of colours - although why they needed an advert is anyone's guess! https://youtu.be/zxMluSU6Frw

Anthony Daniels

Crown Vics in service have an engine hours meter, like boats, for just that reason.

Martin Laver

Yeah. Most old games required a level of commitment I can only dream of still having at 42. I Kickstarted Elite:Dangerous as I was a boy who grew up on Elite 2: Frontier. On an Amiga 500 plus.

Martin Laver

Apropos the Tatra on Cars & Classics, it’s nice to see Stevie Wonder still keeping his eye in on the re spraying side of things.

Martin Laver

Elite did make a comeback! The nameplate got revived with the game Elite:dangerous, with a full scale explorable milky way!

Ben Halloran

He definitely lived in that area. I saw him in the Homebase in Penge a number of times. Wish I'd spotted his BMW though!

Tom Carter

Ah retro computer/gaming talk. It's like my fav things things collided. Old Tech and Cars on the same pod :)

Mark Elliott

I lived in the vicinity of Crystal Palace in the 1990's, I don't know exactly where Mr. P. King resided, but I would often see him in the car park at Safeways in his..................................black BMW 635CSi

Andrew Williamson

I still have my copy, and an Amiga to play it on, but one thing I gleaned from the call from my brother yesterday is that it's far harder to play than we might remember. He said he played it online through an emulator and took a real beating.

Ant Brown

Elite podcast, loved it. Both classic BBC Micro game title & loudly trimmed Lotus. Elite

Al Scott

Always remember playing Elite on the BBC. Got way through the game and my sister then recorded the top 40 over it…. Absolutely feckin raging!!

david price

Apropos Elite, the developers Frontier Developments made the original free to download if you have a thirst to slake.

Martin Laver

I've just made a pre-emptive strike re:Elite on the twitter. I'm just catching up on the podcast now as I had to get validation of my 1980s self last night when I was walking the dog, so missed the end of the 'cast. Everyone knows that an older brother will never miss a chance to deny an untrue brag. This one is quite the achievement, trust me. Anyway, will listen to the rest now. Something, something Tatras is where I got to... I think Jonny's about to condense his entire garage into a single (as yet unbought) car... 🤨

Ant Brown

Melbourne Highway Patrol have some of these. Tomorrows forecast is for 37 Degrees So they may have a few less

Neil Gatley

Or a before picture of Jimmy Nail

Neil Gatley

😂

Chris Taylor

ok on the BMWs. The car might have 80k miles on the clock but 300k miles equivalent on the engine through idling all day. It cooks the engine bay plastics and other components. Lots of workshops now service on engine running duration rather than mileage as a result.

Andrew

It's about time some Spectrum stuff appeared (not listened yet so the references above could be misleading!). Must at some point create a smith and sniff loading screen like I did for TLBS! Possibly for a Smith and Sniff based adventure game?

Stephen Cooper

I was talking to a Police Officer Autosport Show today, who told me that BWW no long supply Police cars, and they have a contract with Audi. And that the XC90 Volvos were crap for a TPAK manoeuvre as they automatically brake when they get too close to the offending vehicle.

Richard Matthews

Would love a black elite. And unlimited AA call-outs.

Jim Galbraith

When browsing the classifieds in the 1990's, I honestly used to think that the Lotus Elite "project" was a model designation.

Tom Lanigan

Elite AND a Tatra - makes me very happy indeed. I adore Tatras - saw one up at the ACE Cafe - the replacement to this one with XJS style flying buttresses. The Tatraplan was superb - anything with a split rear screen and Flash Gordon style central vertical spoiler is fantastic.

Anthony Daniels

If anyone fancies playing Elite have a look at oolite.org Inspired by the original and runs on mac/Windows/linux

Martin Stephenson

We spent Xmas eve day building the Lego Fiat Nuovo. It at least looks reasonable compared to the real thing. Really eyeing the Ghostbusters Ecto next but that’s a fair chunk of coin.

Jeffrey Smith

I saw that Elite at Scramble, incredible interior 😙👌 The Elan shooting brake next to it as well!

Simon Barrett

Is that Paul king or Ross noble?

Robert McDonald

The size and shape of rear door aperture on the new Aygo is a total joke
