Podcast 136 - Pinin Popeye and the Ka rescuer

In our first episode with our new sponsor, Jonny has spotted a familiar face with badly cared-for car. Also in this episode, the man who tries to save Kas, laid back dentistry, buying an ex-courtesy car, the weird social media postings of Fiat’s CEO, school run chic, the season of nutty perfume ads, a Chrysler 180 with an aftermarket fuel cap, the land where the V8 is normal, the truth about the Passat W8, JLR’s boss steps down, how to save Jaguar, Renault 21 Turbo v Peugeot 405 Mi16, and a car podcast smackdown on the streets of Los Angeles.

As the lucky owner of a manual X300 XJR, I can confirm that although the ergonomics of the shifter and pedals are quite poor, and the throw is rather long and imprecise, there's something extremely entertaining about having a manual paired with that engine, especially with some intake and exhaust mods that really let it sing its supercharged harmony. Incidentally, according to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Archive, there were actually a total of 268 manual X300 XJRs produced across all three years, with 167 of them for the 1995 model year; none of them made it to the US, but mine somehow got the swap, allegedly using Aston DB7 parts. Incorrect production numbers in car ads are quite annoying.

Ford Ka (pronounced like cat without the t) none of this 'kay ay' rubbish

We've had a W8 Passat in the family for 17 years. Not unreliable at all, mostly, somewhat, honestly! It's actually been fine, very few W8 specific bits have gone wrong but it is a right pain to do anything on, even changing the battery requires taking the cowl off! Still they are interesting. Just not in a mainstream desirable way 😅 https://youtu.be/9mDhtSYLRyE

They certainly do like to rust! I'm on my second Disco 1, this 1990 200tdi is bobtailed so there is less steel to go bad. I had a 2001 V8 D2 for a while too, as you say the body was perfect but it needed a bit of chassis welding. For some reason despite them being a pain I really like the Discovery.

I was listening to this on a long drive yesterday and it occured to me that I could barely remember the last time i saw a Jag on the road. They just seem so rare.

K,A? Ford Ka (kar) no? I realise I'm arguing with 2 renowned car journalists btw

Andrew Armstrong

As far as I know, the Chrysler 180 was not sold in South America. What was successfully sold by that company was the Dodge 1500 (later known as VW 1500), which was nothing else than the Hillman Avenger.

I hate to be pedantic but I believe Doug De Muro has sold multiple Passat W8s on his website, he makes an awful fuss about them on the socials when one appears

Unfortunately a Discovery 1's have a steel inner shell clad with Aluminium outer panels that hide everything! I've had 3 Disco 1s and all needed inner/outer sills, bootfloor, front inner wings, body mounts, rear crossmember etc etc. The chassis' are bomb proof though.. Weirdly the D2 went the other way with mint bodies but a chassis that snaps and rots from the rear seats backwards..

On the subject of KAs, a friend of mine had what appeared to be a very clean KA and enthusiastically asked me to fit a CD charger, sub and amp in the boot.. As I lifted the drivers door aperture seal to run the cables into the boot, a 20cm section of inner sill came off with seal. I neatly placed the seal back down and suggested it might not be a good idea to carry on the wannabe Max Power Ice install! 🙈🤣🤣

I think the problem with Jaguar is that it has lost its relevance in the market place. Big saloons are out and SUVs / Crossovers are the future. JLR already has a globally recognised and respected SUV brand in Land Rover producing a bewildering range of cars. Big engine sports cars are also increasingly a thing of the past and I whilst agree it would be a shame if it is the end of Jaguar, I don't expect Tata care about anything beyond the balance sheets.

The 21 Turbo might have been quicker, but the 405 was a clean design and is still IMO the sharpest looking rep mobile car of the 1980s; a design that has aged really gracefully. When I was in sixth form back in the mid 90s, one of my friends’ parents owned a his and hers pair of Mi-16s, one of which had been further tuned even though I wouldn’t have described either of his folks as car enthusiasts. One day my mate rocked up driving one of the Mi-16s instead of his 1.2 Nova. We were only 17 and we took off for a lunchtime blast in it, and it absolutely flew even though he didn’t have the talent to handle the Nova safely let alone any kind of performance car. Annoyingly we ended up getting a flat tyre which I had to change in a car park being assisted by three idiots who knew nothing about cars. That was him rumbled as he had to return home with the car needing a replacement tyre and to cough up what had happened to his parents; who didn’t know he’d taken the Mi16 out for the day. We did some silly speeds in built up areas that day, funny how it dawns on you in older age about the stupidity of things you do when young. On a totally different note, I bought a Ka for a girlfriend back in 2017 which had managed to avoid the need for any welding. The only downside was its requirement for head gaskets to be replaced on a regular basis.

I've been watching an early V8 Discovery on Car and Classic, 3.5 on carbs. Looks really minty up above but I suspect it's rotten as a pear down below. I have nowhere to put it but that doesn't stop me wanting it.

Speaking of Christmas adverts, Celtic Football club's Christmas advert for some reason has a 5 door LADA NIVA as the only car featured being loaded by a bunch of footballers. Very odd

George Foster

Laughing as much at Manscape as the podulecast! My GOD he goes on about shaved balls.

Jonny it would have been 2012 onward. I have a 2014 XFS Sportbrake in Italian racing red. It's still a beautiful place to be and can get a right old strop on when you deploy the big stick :)

Nigel Hancock

We cant lose Jag surely? we just cant. But then I suppose everyone said the same about Rover (still gripes a bit that one)

Adam

Did Rich say no V8s in Ford trucks any more? They're still going with the 5.0L "Coyote" in the F-150. Based on what I see at the dealership I work at here in the Toronto area it's probably still a 50/50 split with those and the Ecoboost V6s as far as the non-hybrid / BEV trucks go.

Ed Nicholson

A guy I knew (friend of a friend, you know the deal) crashed his car and was given a new KA by the bodyshop….. he then crashed that and buckled the wheel. Worried that the bodyshop would notice the clearly new tyre of the spare he asked me “what can I do about it” As it was the front wheel i said “give me the keys” and performed a suitable tyre-aging via a slightly under-powered burnout

Adam

Been waiting for this all day 😁

Adam

Congratulations guys on the sponsorship, a great match for your content.
