We start this week with a picture of Jonny drinking Guinness in his hotel room in Ireland. Then we we have the evolution of the Opel badge and the hard-to-draw Vauxhall badge, the Rolls-Royce Spectre, the ridiculous Peugeot 1007, and the almost as ridiculous 422bhp Smart #1 Brabus. Then we have the comically short wheelbase Heuliez Intruder, a Mira Sport shower, and the evolution of the Irish number plate.

Some more stuff about the Spectre - https://www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/en_GB/showroom/spectre.html

More about the Smart #1 Brabus - https://www.brabus.com/en/coops/brabus-x-smart.html

Some gentle DnB from The Good 2 Bad & Hugly - https://youtu.be/y029uYooTdY

Turns out Eurostars were stored and cleaned at a depot West London - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pole_depot

Heuliez - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuliez

Coldplay and John Farnham - https://youtu.be/19JN50bLKjY

Sadly the yellow Mazda 121 seems to have disappeared from Auto Trader.

The bold font you describe sounds like the 'metro plate' which is fairly widely used in Northern Ireland, and sometimes in the Republic too. They're horrific.

Stephen McEvoy

I have never seen a front plate on an old Irish car like the 129 IM above. I suspect that might be the rear plate off a car registered pre 87. My uncle bought a brand new SD1 2000 in 1980s County Louth with the red rear plates with individually affixed letters and numbers. To this day, it is one of the greatest cars I have ever been in,

Michael Donnelly

This is also a problem in Italy, where if you register or re-register a car, or even damage a number plate, it’s treated just like a new car registration. On an 80s car, you’d lose the white-on-black regional plates and get a new EU-flag ED-123-BC type plate on a white background. Totally ruins the look of a classic. There are no ‘age appropriate’ options like our system.

Maybe Jonny should get a Skoda Roomster? Credit to them for making something so batshit crazy looking yet practical. Current Skodas are dull by comparison.

This is my vote for interesting school run car; https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202210060463612

Now would be the time for Jonny to scratch that Saab itch. 9-5 wagon?

John Taylor

I'll be interested to see Jonny's Irish/NI car cave. My uncle lives near Portadown and I discovered a few years back that Ari Vatanen's Pug 405 from "Climb Dance" was stored a few miles down the road (although I believe it is now relocated to near Brands Hatch). Also, the former French press-car Lotus Opel Omega just turned up around here, imported by a local collector. What a weapon.

Surely 90s Fiat is the easiest logo to draw ///// :)

Robin Capper

Liquid drum and bass is the sub-genre chaps, moderately pleased you’re a speaker roaster too!

Andy

Buy this Jonny. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202210120664529

... and car imports now have to have the number starting at 120000 ! So, the plate will have Yr, County, 120000+ which has really annoyed the classic/vintage people - the plate will have a very out-of-place look on an older car. E.g. a 1965 car registered in, say, Co. Wicklow, will be 65 WW 122345. They have the option of choosing a ZV 12345 number instead - but those numbers are getting unwieldy now too. Civil Servants developing these numbering systems know little and care less about car-things!

Eugene Ryan

Additional. Surely the # in the name of that Brabus is just short for 'number'?

Andrew Armstrong

I hate that song, and even I got goosebumps!

Andrew Armstrong

The Irish reg plates now have an extra number after the year (1 for Jan to June, 2 for June to Dec) because in 2012, the Irish motor industry was afraid unlucky 13 would shrink car sales the following year.

Tim

Those showers always remind me of the Motor Industry Research Association, as if they were designed to check for water ingress on this week’s hastily-bodged BL prototype convertible. I like to think they’d also offer hallway-scale Belgian Pavé for slipper durability testing and maybe a miniature dyno for the hamster.

Tom Wyeth

That DnB remix was glorious

The Manta GTE (closely followed by the Corolla AE86) was the young lad's sports car of choice in NI when I was a lad. Neighbour was a well off local businessman and bought his son a new gold GTE before he'd passed his test, then got one of the employees from the factory to sit in the passenger seat while it was driven.

Dave Law

I had to go and check. It was £390 that the *Dorchester Red* (aka metallic brown) 5 seat Audi A2 went for. That would have been ideal, there's a moral there. Always buy the car, you'll always get non-buyers remorse otherwise. We won't see the likes of those prices again 😔 Ok, I promise, I promise I'll stop trolling about this. * uncrosses fingers *

Ant Brown

Just raved my cheerios onto the floor with that drum and base close out! Love that DJ Porter

Greg Stephens

I've been waiting for a suitable opportunity to contribute and after being inspired by Jonny's AMG-Bellend badge idea, I've sketched a subtle, yet clear reworking of the AMG crest badge 🔔 now featuring a flute! ...if only I could post it on here somehow.. I'll email it through. Cheers.

The heuliez is for sale at dk engineering. https://www.dkeng.co.uk/ferrari-sales/1225/blue_chip_competition_cars/mercedes_g_wagen_intruder_concept_by_heuliez.html

jon honeyball

That cable knot..

Robin Johnsen

I think the spectre looks a hell of a lot like the Bentley Mulsanne coupe, especially the rear end. They may have said this but I haven’t listened to the poddy yet, I’ll listen to it tomorrow at uni

Gabriel Grist-Parker

I have never felt the need for a personal licence plate, but if had been given the one I saw on a Tesla Model 3 in Sweden I'd have reconsidered... WNK80Y

Lennart Mäkinen

‘37-‘64 Opel logos are so achingly cool
