Podcast 130 - Polestar 3 and the myth of the fast estate

Jonny has been to see a new EV and Richard thinks no one will buy the M3 Touring. Also in this episode, hitting the vitamin C supplements, NASCAR driver Richard Pictures, a German Liam Neeson disguised as a Swede, a big American locomotive having a baby, the urge to drive into an arrester bed, how to save F1 money on safety features, the under-rated Jaguar I-Pace, Gerry McGovern doubling for Brian May, seeing Tesla drivers’ trousers, cat friendly holidays, taking a tortoise to an Airbnb, a trip to the Trafford Centre, mirroring someone’s accent, the chance to put a back seat in a 911 GT3 Touring, accidentally mis-naming the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, thoughts on the VW Arteon Shooting Brake PHEV, 20 years since the start of ’new’ Top Gear, and Jonny’s doing a school careers talk.

That Lizz Truss comment aged well 😂

Ryan

I can't believe Richard so accurately predicted the downfall of Liz Truss. Looking forward to the next premonition. The return of Alldays and Onions perhaps...?

I moved to the South West 7 years ago, and I've increasingly found myself saying 'on a night' instead of 'at night' Additionally greeting friends as 'shag' or 'shagger' is a peculiar Bath-ism that has accidently become a greeting that mystifies anybody from elsewhere in the country.

John Hammond

Can't wait for the next one, RR Specky or Cadillac Celery-stick?

Maurice Barnes

Richard Pics reminded me of the star of the company phone directory at a large U.S. bank I used to work for, a certain Mr Randy Fiddler. Randy Fiddler would have made an excellent NASCAR driver. Imagine the commentary… “Randy Fiddler coming from behind… and he makes contact with Busch….”. At another firm I always felt sorry for Shona Dick.

David Carss

“…I reached out to them”. Chapeau!

Jim Galbraith

And in defence of the Trafford Centre they once allowed me to park my drift car/trailer/tow car behind the barriers in the coach car park. Properly decent.

After hearing this pod I just had to share this absolute gem on Steven Seagull’s Wikipedia entry: “…Additionally, while serving as stunt coordinator for Out for Justice, LeBell allegedly got into an on-set altercation with Seagal over his mistreatment of some of the film's stunt performers. After the actor claimed that, due to his aikido training, he was "immune" to being choked unconscious, LeBell offered Seagal the opportunity to prove it. LeBell is said to have placed his arms around Seagal's neck, and once Seagal said "go", proceeded to choke him unconscious, with Seagal losing control of his bowels.”

Loved the amount of car chat for a change.

Not long after the A46 Batheaston bypass opened, my Dad and I came up to a Bedford TM wrecker suspend towing a broken down double decker bus. You could hear it before we drew level. It had a 2 stroke Detroit V engine and the driver was absolutely rinsing the life out of it. We drew level and reckoned that it was towing the bus at about 70mph along the Batheaston stretch.

Before the A46 dual carriageway opened around 1995, the road was all single carriageway and there were a couple of other escape lanes on that section as it was a much steeper decent. The lanes will stop a vehicle pretty much dead, and as Richard says; I'd imagine the forces are pretty violent particularly in a vehicle weighing 40 tonnes when the load shifts. Normally an embedded vehicle will have to be pulled back out by a heavy wrecker. On the rare occasions I descend into Bath that way in a truck, I've always got the retarder brake on as the truck will trickle down without the need for use of the foot brakes. Cooked brakes are less of an issue on trucks these days but I wouldn't have fancied trying it in a 60's Atkinson Borderer with drum brakes and a 9 speed crash gearbox.

Incredible amount of car content this week, apart from Ricky's piccies.

Phil R

Or Richard Seaman. Went to school with a guy who's name was Steele Pullin, he got called a Pajero often. also went to school with someone called Christian Blood. Not sure if John Peel played metal often, but 3 more from them coming along later.

Stephen Voss

Don't forget the actual NASCAR (and other series) racing driver: Dick Trickle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Trickle

Peter Heamon

I often drove on Route 128 near Canton, MA, and there was an escape ramp that was signed as a "truck turnout". Anytime I was in the car with anyone else, I could not ever stop myself from making the same stupid joke - "We've got such a great truck turnout here tonight. I'm so happy to see you all."

Geoff Evans

So glad I subscribed. Listening to it on my way home. Ssssssspowtahhhh.

Aiden Cameron

No it was fine, a relief to hear that there was no long term backlash from buying the Fiat Panda!! 😀

Steve Morton

Just read the show notes, that's an awful lot of content to shoehorn into a 1 hour podcast. I'll take my slowest car out tomorrow for my daily commute and leave a few minutes early so I can enjoy it all before arriving at work. The Boomtown Rats got it all wrong.

Mark Morgan

If its the one I'm thinking about, it was built after my Father In Law crashed a quarry lorry there in the late 60's. Demolished a row of lock up garages in the process. I'll check with him when I speak to him later.

Nigel Hancock

Great show gents.

Graham Dallas

As I was listening back to it I thought, oh dear, I hope we’ve not been too car-y this week. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Yessir!

A lot of car content this week. A very high percentage in fact…. In addition to some useful dating information for blokes! Another great episode though chaps. Thanks

Steve Morton

A46 into Bath, escape road just of a right hand bend? I've wondered about that as well...
