Show notes 125

Not much to add to this week’s show so here are some pictures taken by members of the audience at the live recording (including several of Jonny and Richard adopting the rally driver and co-driver positions with an armchair) and a couple of links;

Busfest. Apparently it’s the world’s largest VW Transporter festival - https://www.busfest.org/busfest/

World’s largest cruise ship is likely to be scrapped before it’s been used - https://jalopnik.com/worlds-largest-cruise-ship-to-be-scrapped-before-first-1849501828

Huge thanks to everyone who came to this show and to everyone at Morgan and the Morgan Experience Centre for being such excellent hosts for the first Smith and Sniff live recording. Another one very soon, we hope.

The XJ-S Richard mentioned from Radwood, I’m pretty sure is the one Sean Bean drove in Curfew.

I think Smith and Sniff might miss a trick if they don’t do a live recording from one of Ford’s various facilities in Essex. And I’m definitely not just saying that because I live near Dagenham.p and all my neighbours have Transits.

My local hand car wash been taking cards for a while, not far from Johnny either…

Shaun Brennan

After the discussion on car washing and Johnny saying that no hand car wash takes card I would like to point out that there is one on the A64 opposite Vertigrow near Stockton-on-the-forest. And not only does it accept card it's completely cashless

Great podcast and even more fun because of the audience! Any chance we could see the illustrations that were in the Michigan Road Safety book?

Lisa Monsterken

Yes remember the all black trainers. Sad remember it. From them from 80's you Reebok did an all black edition knowing Reebok still probably do

Paul Smith

Given their reputation, that must have been Yas Marina levels of illumination 😂

Simon Whittaker

I remember. I subsequently had a pint with Chris Knowles, the K in KWE, when he was advising a friend on an XJ-S to buy for James May's wine show. He as quite illuminating on all the things that can go wrong with those cars. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Richard: Top Gear did a feature with May on a company who restomodded XJS’ KWE Engineering

Is this one you run past Mrs Porter first or ask forgiveness later?

Dave Smith

Richard's disposition & Jonny's long-jointedness make these photos look like a ventriloquist and his special mate 😁💪🏼

Possibly the best part about listening to the live show was the full-throated FOWDS from the crowd, followed by the immediate admonishing of Jonny and the chorus of TRAAAANSIT. Couldn't stop grinning. I feel you should have had another presenter sat up there with you, who didn't participate in any way, right up until the end when one of you said, "Oh, him? Well, since we're at Morgan, he's the third wheel."

Brendan McAleer

Is the real reason rally co-drivers are sat so low because it means they can get snacks from the glove box/wherever else the packet of revels has ended up as it ricochets around the interior during a stage?

Tom Clynes

Sounds advice. I'll try this piss perimeter theory... Richard

Smith and Sniff

The best way to dissuade badgers from coming along their run through your garden (and foxes, too) is to piss where they're coming through. You're the bigger predator and they'll not come through there because you've marked it as your territory. This was recommended by a commercial gardener, who sends her male employees to problem gardens to address the issue in this way. We live in woodland and keep Indian runner and Muscovy ducks. So far we've not lost any to foxes and badgers, which I put down to my maintaining a 'piss perimeter' around the area in which the ducks forage. I actually encountered a badger going about its business a few years ago, when I was walking back to the workshop, in the dusk, after getting my Suzuki SJ stuck (idiot). I had both hands full of tools that I didn't want to leave in the SJ overnight and this badger arrived at the path I was walking along, from the side, coinciding with my arrival at the same point. It reared up and hissed at me, very angrily. I was terrified because it took me a while to figure out what the bloody hell it was. All I could do was windmill arms full of spanners at it and bellow expletives to try and scare off whatever it was seemingly attacking me. It's very rare any British wildlife is actually scary, but a large badger, taking offence at its routine being disturbed is not something to be trifled with. So, Richard, get your piss barrier set up, but try and avoid the time when your passing badger might be coming through - no one wants to be caught cock in hand during a badger assault!

Great evening, well worth the trip up from Cornwall and the closed section of the M5 that detoured via Weston S-M on the way home 🤦‍♂️ got to my bed at 02:30 😁🤣

Adam

Dear lord, you're not wrong! My ride back was a shocker. I think every road had some sort of closure and/or reduced speed limit. It was weird being the only vehicle on the M5 and having to do 40mph.

Brilliant show - hope you get to do one closer to that under-represented area of the country - the South East (!) A good number of the 'not a euphemism' moments would have been a great fit for 'Car or Bedroom' round of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Simon Turner

Brilliant evening gents, well worth the traffic jams and detours. Let's hope it's the first of many!!

Noel Huggett

Please do more of these, we had a great evening on that side of things

Fistenburger

It was a brilliant evening! Lots of laugh out loud moments. Well worth the journey and the slightly bleary eyed 15 hour shift on Friday. 👍👍

Sam Houghton

Normally, my photos are complete toss. Feel like I got lucky with that one.

Great to meet Jonny and Richard, had a laugh and Morgan was a fab venue. Factory tour was superb too - highly recommended.

Andy Cooper

Really glad I went, great to meet you both. Funny as ever and a brilliant atmosphere with like minded car perverts.

Ben Rowe

I had a fun night. Not laughed so much in ages. I like that you included a picture of Jonny picking his nose!
