Show notes 120

Hello again. And this week the big news is SMITH AND SNIFF LIVE

Yes, it’s happening, and what we didn’t say in the podcast is that it’ll be on Thursday 8 September at the Morgan factory in Malvern, Worcestershire. Tickets will be on sale very soon and you, our marvellous Patrons, will have first dibs on them. Watch this space…

As for the usual smorgasbord of shite that makes up the show notes, what have we got? Well, in pictures we have a poster for classic ‘80s cop show Dempsey & Makepeace. The two lead actors ended up getting married, you know. Then we have a DVD cover for Howard’s Way and a screen grab from the show which together tell you a lot about it. Boats! ‘80s clothes! Large mobile telephones at funerals! After that, the picture of Henry Kelly, Michael Parkinson and someone’s Rolls Shadow, the new Civic Type R and the Dacia Jogger.

The full version of the Dempsey & Makepeace theme - https://youtu.be/a10c6Xj59JM

The full Howard’s Way theme (complete with strange jazzy bit) - https://youtu.be/RTzxYgtTftc

A complete episode of Going For Gold. Worth watching the first 45 seconds at least - https://youtu.be/si2JUL1mrTg

Jonny can’t listen to it, but maybe you want to. It’s Sweet Child O’ Mine - https://youtu.be/1w7OgIMMRc4

If either of you (or anyone, really) would like to visit a manned petrol station to have your car politely filled with fuel, then you should swing by my local one - Ivor Miles in Haddenham, Bucks. You could even pick up an Ivor Miles dealer sticker whilst there....!

Nick Davies

The first 30 seconds of Sweet Child O’Mine is my ring tone in my phone! I needed something that grabbed my attention in noisy crowded places. It works!!!

Steve Morton

That ‘perfect’ hand-O symbol… from working in Brazil I can tell you their meaning as described to me… you do it with a kind of finger flick, and it literally means (although they don’t think about it in detail every time) “this is your bumhole, shove something up it until it breaks, thus”. Delightful. So, just don’t flick.

Jonathan Miller

We will be driving past Bristol on the 8th if Any 90’s hitch hikers need a lift? Make a meat flute sign so we know who you are?

Rich

The Shad in the picture could also be Sir David Frost's as he was shareholder and presenter at TV-AM. Randomly found a video of him accidentally smashing the window of one of his Rollers while checking into his car history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPr22GevHRU 🤷‍♂️

Mark Harrigan

OK, but I'm out on the razz from 7pm until midnight so don't sell out in an hour or else I'll have to climb the fence without a ticket. Those Malvern bouncers can be vicious.

Andrew Jones

This evening, I hope. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Really want to know how the Jogger goes.

Campbell Vearing

I'm definitely going to make Malvern on the 8th. When is the booking link going to appear?

Andrew Jones

I would like to hear Richard's feedback on the Dacia Joggingpants, I've been pondering one since they launched as I like the idea of a decent practical motor. I've noticed though how the prices have increased in the last few weeks. After launch it was possible to get £800 off list price but dealers now are offering next to no discount.

John Hammond

Now that I'm all in favour of.

Rick Bean

April 1983 would be when Greg Dyke took over at TV-AM. If that's not his Shad, I'm a monkey's uncle. Also re Paul Coia, I used to very much enjoy "Catchword" back in the early 90s. Day after day it would be a parade of people trotting out "antidisestablishmentarianism" and "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis"

Mike Follows

Time to reclaim it then!

Mike Follows

I'm not sure I'd place Howards Way or the Dempsey & Makepeace theme above the original electric guitar heavy theme from Bergerac. It was toned down a bit in later series with the introduction an accordion to the mix. Short but sweet but it'll never top Harry South's introduction theme to the Sweeney and the time lapse of the Ford Consul screaming down a South London back street.

John Hammond

Exactly that!! It was like an unpleasant yacht based fanfare to the weekend.

John Hammond

Of course the definitive version of the Howard's Way theme has to be with one with lyrics. A musical gem fortunately lost to the ages, if it wasn't for YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuoN2pdRTQ8

Simon O

On the topic of GnR, OTSOT, Slash drives a manual V12 Vantage. Black of course.

Brendan McAleer

I never knew that renowned cricketist Nasser Hussain was in Howard's Way

Giles Guthrie

I think it would be easier if you just moved house. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Malvern is no good for me, please can you hold the live show nearer my house?

Simon O

Johnny might want to read this before starting his campaign to use the "perfect" hand signal. Apparently it's been adopted by the US white supremacists. https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-49837898

Rick Bean

Howard's Way featured from Memory Jan Howard Lotus Excel with car phone, Charles Frere Lamborghini Countach, Ken Masters Renault GTA (Alpine). Parky when he moved to Oz had a Jaguar Series 3 V12 with Kent Alloys (Equalizer spec) as I remember seeing it in a feature in either the TV Times or Daily Mail

Cornish Rider

I'd have to add the Blockbusters theme tune as one of the top TV theme tunes of back when I were a lad... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsSzXq34ysg

Ben Backhouse

When recalling pre A/C days as student EHO s we used to drive the Vauxhall HA van with windows up in heat of summer and put the heating on full and drive about until one of us cracked...soaked in sweat and rivers of tears falling down our faces...oh How we laughed

Paul Fargher

Oh and this is the jazzy Howard's Way theme WITH full boat roll understeer action https://youtu.be/YEqEQrSvGiM

Anthony Daniels

I can't stop singing the blasted Going for Gold theme tune now - here it is in its full 2 minutes 24 magnificence (written by Hans Zimmerman no less) https://youtu.be/8-7rWePM6lM

Anthony Daniels

Gutted. I'm working all weekend...! Fuarrrkkkk...!

Rup (FastAsFunk)

I am in for the 8th!

Rob

Noooo! I've been looking forward to the live show since Jonny teased it to the penthouse crew. Now I find out you're doing it whilst I'm in The Netherlands. Happy to do the 8th but could you change the venue to Amsterdam, please? Thanks in advance.

Ronnie Whelan

I’m surprised that Honda are advertising that all the vents and shapes to the new Type-R are functional, suggesting they weren’t on the last model. I’m certain I remember Honda saying last time that although there were loads of flicks and vents etc, they were all functional. Have I made that up?

Richard Major

Watching a Paul Coia hosted quiz was like watching a glass of water.

Peter Heamon

The Howard's Way theme tune is synonymous with Sunday evenings in the 80s. Every time I hear it, I feel I should be worrying about the homework I haven't done for the next day.

Toby

Something about you both running on stage in matching F1 blazers with a white board in the background is giving off very strong Alan Partridge vibes! Can I request a cheeky "Ah ha" and maybe jazz hands? Can't wait!

Sam Houghton

Ok I am a few episodes behind but I thought I would share an A/C story. A good friend of mine is like Jonny, hates the A/C in the car. Being in Australia we have some very toasty summers so it is almost a necessity to have it, even just to be able to hold the steering wheel. Out of all the stories I have with my mate and his anti A/C, the best one was when he was driving home from work on a warm summers day (about 35 degree C) and our friend had a bit of a "brain wave," instead of A/C, he'd turn on the heater in the car. Why? His thought process was that instead of cooling in the car and stepping out into the heat, he'd be hot in the car and when he stepped out it'd be cooler. He did mention it was quite unbearable in the car but decided to continue his 30 min journey. The end result wasn't as he expected, including a mild case of dehydration. Another item I want to bring up was in regards to a comment Richard made in episode 118 - not liking people who leave the sun visor down in a parked car. I am one of those horrible people. Why? Because I have a fear of spiders and in the warmer months in here in Australia, the huntsman spiders are known to hide in the folded up visor. You can imagine the turn of events when you discover the beast as it falls into your lap after you bring the visor down.

PAUL CLARK

If there isn't a recording in the car park at Baldock Services I'll be sadly disappointed. Maybe the homecoming tour?

Maurice Barnes

Haven’t finished the episode yet but you should do SOME form of presentation/activity on S&S Live Show. Think of the Cool Wall™️: neither of you have seen the other’s homework, and we get to see your reactions live on stage. For example, it could be “Jonny & Richard’s Gentleman’s Holiday”, where you each pick a location, motors and activities, and surprise each other with your choices. Idk. Something like that. Maybe?

Ryan Barnes

Damn, I’m in France on that date.

Gill Pile

Hearing about a live pod has made my day. I shall bring my dad in his blue 80s short shorts that he still wore in the 90s when I was a child. He probably still has them.

Joe Brudenell

S&S live sounds great, I'm actually in London that week, so can't make it. That said I live in the North of Scotland so unlikely to make in any case.

Graham Dallas

This week Richard finds his 30yr old alesis quadraverb and gets it stuck on toilet reverb preset 😁

Martin Stephenson

As long as there's more shows in Worcestershire in the future, sign me up!

Stuart Richards

This podcast takes me back to scrounging Opel brochures from "Tony LeVoi" regional Opel car dealers in the 1980s in Grays, Essex.

Tom Lanigan

Smith n Sniff Live....can't wait. And what a place to hold it as well

Richard Matthews

I can't make the 8th due to a pre-op meeting! Please do more.

Adam Clark

I watched the first episode of Dempsey and Makepeace after the last time you both talked about it. It was kind of alright, the music is good, but the thing I really enjoyed was when they went to a dinner or ball, the band there was playing the theme from the show. That's just brilliant.

Firstdan2000

Oh that's excellent news, only a couple of hours drive for me, worth it though.
