Podcast 118 - How to brush your Hyundai

Jonny has encountered a strangely-dressed car washing man. Also in this episode, how to pronounce car names, the surprising niceness of Watchet, the joys of a narrow car, what you get on a base model these days, chaotic looking 911s, defending terrible clothes because they cost a lot, getting close to a fox, vigilante path clearance, the car for a jazzy man in linen, patting a Jag, shouting at an Up GTI driver, Britain's best allotment cars, the Focus and Fiesta facelifts, the new Peugeot 308 doesn't look right, getting annoyed with people leaving sun visors down, Banham kit cars, and the all-new Smith and Sniff encyclopaedia.

Was it light blue? My dad had one

Jon

I think they’re intended for cleaning wheels though? I would put a brush anywhere near paintwork, unless it was a 30 year old Corolla with that paint that is neither Matt nor gloss anymore

Ant N

They didn't do themselves any favours with the "High tech, high spec, Hy-undai" campaign circa early 90s.

I recently got Gran Turismo 7 and lo and behold among the first three cars you can buy/win is STILL the mighty DEMIO. Now working my way to an RX-7 and Impreza. It's like 1997 all over again... https://gamerant.com/gran-turismo-7-best-starter-car-honda-fit-toyota-aqua-mazda-demio-choice/

Robert Wootton

No, don’t think we did either… was perfect for cleaning 80s bmw cross-spoke alloys and convertible’s tilts though!

10 years ago my wife and I met Timmy Mallett in a food hall in Madrid. We struck up a conversation and ended up spending the evening with him and his mate. He was great company, full of fun and always performing but a genuinely nice guy. If I can get it to link, I’ll add a video of him fooling around with one of those bits of tat the street vendors try to ply you with. As I said, always performing… https://www.dropbox.com/s/qmpt9dc17bfwhmo/mallet.MOV?dl=0

Yes I had one of those that came with a very early Karcher pressure washer. Never dared use it mind for fear of scratching

Dave Smith

Yep. Can confirm what Ant says from GT on the PlayStation 1. The Demio was equally shite in real life.

Ed Storer

You are quite right about the Demio. The Mazda Demio A Spec built by Mazdaspeed was indeed a prize for the Sunday Cup in the original Gran Turismo on the playstation 1. Packed a whopping 99hp. As this was the first tournament you could enter, it would have been the 2nd car a lot of players would have owned. It could be sold for for somewhere in the region of 10k in game credits, so alot of early game rinse and repeat. Many years ago, I had an elderly neighbour who used to clean bird shit off his silver Mazda 626 with a plastic scouring pad. By the time I moved out, and after years of inappropriate scrubbing, the car looked like a hologram when it was in direct sunlight.

As I'm as old as dirt (it seems, though younger than Richard, and Jonny for that matter by about a month I think...) I can confirm that both the first and second games foisted the Demio on you. It was no good to either sell (worthless) nor drive (shite and slow). Of course, all this was fields, gravy and rickets back then. As far as the eye could see.

Ant Brown

great car the Jazz, nimble and van like family motoring! ;)

Neil Butler

There used to be a similarly Del Monte'd up Jazz fan near where I live in the 1990's who used to drive a Peugeot 504 Cabriolet. It was a really good combo.

Tom Carter

Was the bare patch the same tan as the rest of him? Because he sounds like a classic nudist.

david marden

Strictly speaking, Citroen is supposed to be "see troh ENN" but again there are ads that say it how we say it in England, "sitrun", which is usually enough to shut the pedants up

Ben Oliver

I think Hyundai tried to switch the UK pronnouciation from "High-un-Die" to "Hyun-Day" via some ads about 15 years ago but rapidly gave up...

Rich Tysoe

The Mazda Demio is one of three cars you could choose at the beginning of Gran Turismo 3, the first GT game on the PlayStation 2, the other two cars were the Chrysler PT Cruiser and the Toyota Corolla AE86 Trueno. Why you would choose anything but the Toyota is baffling, however I’ve always admired the Gran Turismo series for its inclusion of some very left-field cars. I can’t thick of another video game in which you could race a Daihatsu Midget against a Peugeot 406 V6 saloon and a Vector M12 GT2 race car.

Charlie Steele

When I had a Demio (10-12 years ago) the only people who knew what it was told me that they recognised it from the game. Fully packed for vacation with me, my wife and our four dogs it would really struggle to go uphill.

Lennart Mäkinen

Anyone noticed that Skoda now call it “Schkoda” in a Sean Connary accent?

Robin White

Bloody hell! We had one of those and I’d completely forgotten about it! Only thing being though, my parents had no hosepipe so it was just used to rub the cack off wheels 🤦🏻‍♂️ Amazing the total and complete muck your brain stores… 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Ant Brown

No allotments in the US some cities will have community gardens but they share it among all the residents that participate.

Bill

The Demio was a prize on the original Gran Turismo. Just googled Watchet and it seems it was the inspiration for "The rime of the Ancient Mariner" - the original one, not the Iron Maiden version

Bruce Driffill

I’ve had 3 pet (African Pygmy) hedgehogs and they actually have quite good ground clearance, surprisingly long legs. Fascinating creatures. I think if they were a car they would be more of a Baja bug.

Gavin Mulholland

I’m sure it was gran turismo 4 that had the Demio on it. That was the game that had the daihatsu midget on it too, a childhood classic for me!

Archie Evans

In fairness to the hyundai man, my nan had a brush that looked like a dust pan but was actually for cars. The bristles were very soft (like a shaving brush) and you could plug a hose into the handle that fed through the brush head. Was definitely from the 70s

Jamie W

sorted

John P

I sent Jonny a message on his LBS channel

Nigel Hancock

Sorted for me, thanks Rich!

Matt Tester

Yay!

Gavin Mulholland

Sorry gang, not sure what's going on there, have re-uploaded the audio file to see if that sorts it. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Has anyone messaged Rich on Twitter?

Graham Dallas

Someone put the OTSOT signal up in the sky!

Matt Tester

Not just me then

Marc

Yes can't see that little linky thing I download it from?

Nigel Hancock

I'm trying not to be impatient but I don't see the audio play options.
