Pod 117 - Painting cars is hard
Added 2022-07-17 17:00:04 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard make another feeble attempt to read out listeners' messages. Topics covered include John Michael Jar, Kick by INXS in a convertible, the lost art of chatting about hifi separates, a crazy valve amp stereo for your car, news of the Lithuanian car scene, vehicles that have been demoted to roadside signs, the best 1500 quid family car, the delights of the K11 Micra, spark plug skinflints, not enjoying breaking down, reviving the economy by being bad at DIY, the disappearance of people called Sandy, glam mums of the '80s, inconsistencies in cars, and things in other people's houses that seemed terribly exotic when you were a kid.

2022-07-24 15:10:36 +0000 UTCJohn Michael Jar will be working with Renault on EV soundscapes (whatever that may be). So I guess his next hit will be Indicateur R5

2022-07-20 16:30:14 +0000 UTCMy next door neighbour has an E90 320d with a terrible rear three quarter respray, and I have to look at it every time I leave my drive. It bothers me in ways it shouldn’t.

2022-07-20 10:32:13 +0000 UTCI think Mickey AgedPaddock gives John Michael Jars a run for the best career* from a few notes department with his 'Cylindrical Gongs'. * Love them both and both have far more than their signature tunes to commend them.

2022-07-20 02:25:13 +0000 UTCI loved this story. I have inherited my dad’s 1982 Technics direct drive turntable and Trio stereo receiver, but this blows that out of the water…

2022-07-18 23:23:13 +0000 UTCI think, in retrospect, we gave poor Monsieur Jar unfairly short shrift in this podcast. Richard

2022-07-18 19:31:25 +0000 UTCThe 1980s. I was at primary school, my friend Stephens parents, Graham and Pam, owned a Chemist and next door a Video shop. So when we went round, it was free Video rental. They also owned, and his is why I'd say Pam fitted into the glam mum category with this, a Sierra Xr4i.

2022-07-18 17:32:03 +0000 UTCI also had a Sandy-type neighbour; Sharon, one of my mum's best friends. They had a fancy open plan house with loads of tech and TVs all over the place. She kinda looked/dressed/spoke like Babs Windsor. I spent all morning fruitlessly trying to google exactly what car she had, but luckily I just watched Jonny's latest car cave vid and there it is. A white E reg Honda Prelude. From new, and she still had it last time I saw her about 5 years ago.

2022-07-18 13:59:53 +0000 UTCon the first car talk my first car is a 2004 Rover 75 Conni SE CDTI Tourer that I got for £400 with a dead clutch master cylinder, I’ve spent £30 on a new master cylinder and an hour replacing it and now i’ve got a pretty decent car. Insurance is surprisingly cheap for a 2.0cdti as i doubt many people my age are running about crashing them into trees.

2022-07-18 13:44:43 +0000 UTCSo excited about the K11, would love to see you cover that Jonny, may be generation flex thing? — have been chatting to my wife about them recently and she'd fully set on it being her first car now. I actually had a Yaris as my first car and ended up getting a T-Sport after. Fantastic cars. Proper cockroach cars! They're reliable — usually well looked after (by older folk), some great aftermarket stuff for them and they look great with a little love.

2022-07-18 11:47:37 +0000 UTCOn the Hi-Fi separates side of things, my dad bought a Quad valve system in the late 50s, early 60s when they first came out. Two Quad II power amps, two electrostatic speakers, pre-amp and FM tuner. The proverbial dog’s danglies. He eventually moved on to less bulky equipment, flogged the electrostatics (boo hiss), but kept the power amps. In a shed. Behind mountains of worthless crap. Slightly damp. In about 1999 I was talking to him about my sound system upgrades, and he said I could have them if I wanted. So exhumed them and found a bloke who would rewire them and replace dodgy capacitors etc. Compatible valves are still being made, so these were replaced. The transformer in one of them shorted out and melted the bitumen potting. Fortunately there is a firm which will wind replacement transformers, so these were replaced. A Croft valve preamp with phono stage was purchased and various sources wired up. The sound, while not earth shattering, is lovely. There is no facility on Patreon to indicate the adenoidal voice necessary to hear this description properly. A serious deficiency.

2022-07-18 09:16:03 +0000 UTCI found just one of those cars Jonny describes in a breakers yard back in April. A Mk1 Twingo which had failed its last 5 MOTs each year, evidently needing repair after repair. The owner had evidently put a new exhaust on the car shortly before it's last MOT; where a sizeable amount of welding onto the previous welding was required. It wound up in the scrap yard and I went for a few hard to get trim parts and came away with a new exhaust system as a bonus.

2022-07-18 09:00:41 +0000 UTCI have my (less than) £1500 car, a 1999 Audi A6 Avant 1.8T. As seen by Jonny at his Christmas Late Brake Show Live event. He committed on it in the accompanying episode.

2022-07-18 08:23:43 +0000 UTCWe had a Sandy type lady that lived in the street, she had a first gen red Celica, that she got from new and drove into the 00's I think it was, she had big hair and always wore a boob tube. There house also had a in ground pool, for Tasmania that was highly unusual and felt glamorous. There was a rumour that my Dad told me that her husband was banned from P&O because when he was on a cruise in Asia he bought a motorbike and was having it shipped home with him, he got drunk broke into the hold and rode the motorbike around the ship. Cheers for the Pod Stephen.

2022-07-18 04:39:26 +0000 UTCAbout 6 years ago my then girlfriend now fiancée Megan, had a k11 micra as her first car, this thing had been in my circle of friends lives for many years as one guys mums car for 5 years, then an ex girlfriend of another’s and all that. It was a 3 door metallic blue 1.3 that had one door half the wrong colour due to a dodgy driveway repair and aerosol, half of one sill (the rusty bit at the back) was done in black stone chip and the only good panel on it was the roof! But as a first car she loved it! Did amazing one tire burnouts and she could throw it though the lanes at some scary speeds! And importantly it was the go to taxi for picking me up at the pub when I’d forgotten I was supposed to drive home and obviously couldn’t! This car definitely proved Jonny’s point of get a car you can maintain yourself!as on her first drive out in the thing it overheated and killed itself going up a hill, well no worries my father and I jumped in my Volvo estate and picked up another engine for £50 and it went in over a weekend of my mates and my dads mates drinking lots of tea and eating bacon sandwiches as we all stood there looking at it marvelling at how the thing so easily went in to the engine bay, a new radiator followed it in and it fired up ready to take Megan to uni for her first year! Not sure what happened to the car but it was spotted about a year after she got rid around derby full of 17 year old lads blaring drum and bass and tazzing around!

2022-07-17 22:27:28 +0000 UTCMy first car was a mini. About the only way to keep it from over heating, I had to have the heater on full tilt, in all weathers…. Heat on full and windows open was the only way!

2022-07-17 22:20:10 +0000 UTCJean Michel Jarre has done many brilliant albums and influenced many 🙄 I won't bore you with my Hi-Fi separates system comprising many manufacturers...I'm Gen X - a bit older than Rich.

2022-07-17 22:15:16 +0000 UTCI listen on a 1982 Braun Hi-Fi with all of the matching separates, still a great bit of kit even now. Anyway what about Trinitrotoluene & Trampoline?

2022-07-17 19:22:11 +0000 UTCIf I had £1500 to spend on a car I think I'd buy a MK4 Golf 1.9TDI or a diesel MK5 Golf depending on size needed
