This week we have a couple of pics of the latest Honda HR-V, the surprisingly long wand of the Koenigsegg CC8S (not CCS as they said on the show), the cacky Ford airbag wheel in a ‘90s Aston Virage/V8, a Mondeo showing a classic Morette four headlight conversion, the archaic engine bay of a Mercedes W123, and the stressful rats’ nest of a Jaguar V12.

As Jonny and Richard said in this show, they’re planning on reading out Patrons’ messages next week so if you’ve got any questions, thoughts or ideas, send in a message through the Patreon. But, please, not suggestions for Jonny’s fake YouTube channel. We’ve got loads of those. Thanking yous.

So, thanks to my FiL, every time I hear pigeons, they're either saying "it's your turn Judy" or "bravo cook". I apologise in advance.

Nick Davies

On holiday in New York this year we met someone in an Irish pub who wanted to tell us all about his ‘European’ (ie English) girlfriend. She had a tattoo of the London Underground roundel on her leg. For several weeks he thought it was the Nissan logo, and couldn’t understand why she showed no interest in the GT-R etc

Ed Storer

In your super car mussing I was surprised the Chevrolet Corvette C8 didn’t get a mention. With a mid engine V8 without any turbos or superchargers, you know it will sound good and it’s pretty modern too. Not silly expensive and available in RHD too. Not saying it would be my choice but an interesting option.

Gordon Segar

Honestly, that Aston dash is just a hot mess, isn't it? If the auto box was any higher, you wouldn't be able to get a cassette out of the player while the car was in Park. I mean that thing is hard into the dash! And what's with the skyward hand brake?!

Mat Moore

I love those old Thames videos, can easily lose a Saturday afternoon watching them all.

Mark Sheridan

Oh dear. I do have a car tattoo. It’s the VW logo accompanied by a pair of checkered flags. At the time 20-something odd years ago I was racing a Mk2 Scirocco. I was woefully uncompetitive so now it’s just a sad reminder.

Jeffrey Smith

I get what you mean about the V8 Virage looking like a kit car knock off of itself. Ferrari 456 is the same. Looks more like a shitty Mister2 knockoff than the real MR2 knockoffs

Matthew Aves

In the city that i’m living in, last-gen HRV is a common ride-sharing car. And many of them had bright stickers on the rear door handle, presuming the drivers are tired of confused passengers not knowing how the rear door works

Wilson Lin

There's a Datsun 260Z out here with the Yamaha engine swapped in. Supercharged, too. Weirdly a good fit.

Brendan McAleer

Absolutely ... people who are unfamiliar with it are usually surprised / impressed when they see that awesome looking engine in an another relatively mundane car.

Ed Nicholson

Whenever I see that feature on CUVs / SUVs, I just think that it must make it harder for children to get in the back seat unassisted.

Ed Nicholson

Speaking of SHO, candidate for one of the unexpectedly loveliest engine bays.

Brendan McAleer

I've a friend with a teal Lagonda (Towns) and the interior on it is absolutely face-meltingly cool. Everything works! (yes, he's an electrical engineer, why do you ask?) https://imgur.com/a/UhSFsWH

Brendan McAleer

On the topic of engines that look too old for the car, I always felt that the M20 in the BMW Z1 looked really out of place. Lovely engine but it should have had something else.

Paul Haselton

I enjoy listening on my car journey on Monday mornings. This morning I was stuck behind a HR-V while you were talking about them. In other news, I have a car tattoo, I've got the McLaren speedmark logo on my leg

Daniel P

I quite like the look of the HR-V. Maybe it’s because I used to work in HR, and that’s the target market. I wish they’d stop farting around with the hidden rear door handle though. It was quirky and cool on the Alfa 156 but is anyone seriously thinking that a small Honda SUV only has really short front doors?

Ed Storer

The XFS Sportbrake is brilliant, up there with the E61. Cheered me up no end to see the new M3 Touring on PH and at Goodwood, maybe all is not lost?

Chris Squirrel

Chris that's why the most I will go with a Jag is my XFS Sportbrake, yes the i-Pace can't really be counted as an SUV as it just looks too sleek.

Nigel Hancock

Just count yourself lucky or I would have bombarded you with pictures of old Simca's I've had including the Rancho :D

Nigel Hancock

Maaaan morettes! What a throwback. They seemed to do them for literally any car! Bet they'll have a retro return in the not to near future.

Chris Colouryum

Sorry about the photo thing, it seems to be a Patreon limitation. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Aye, shame we can't post pics. After the chat about the XJ40 I disappeared down a sinkhole of Arden XJ81s. There's one particular photo where it made me think "if only Jag had done this, they might not be churning out the chungus-SUVs they are now" (i-Pace excepted, that's ace)

Chris Squirrel

My dad worked for Joseph Lucas. He was sufficiently senior to be offered the odd luxury motor which was being used by management on a sort of assessment basis. One of these was a saloon v12, the Jag, I think. He took me for a drive in it, during which he mentioned that the company had serious problems with heat in the engine compartment. So much so that it was some time before they figured out how to stop the battery from evaporating its electrolyte. So even more reason to shun that model. Mind you, I’d stretch a point for the v12 E-type.

Chris Rayner

‘70s Lincoln was my husband’s vote. I wonder if this is a thing where nostalgia for one’s most-loved vehicle is influencing his opinion though 😁 I agree with your Ghost assessment based on videos.

Jennifer Albert

Mystic Metcalf needs to be a thing. Superb idea.

Robin White

Fell down a youtube black hole at the weekend and found this gem. Steve Shaw at the 1976 Earls Court Motor Show .... "Electric cars will be doing 80mph and have a range of 500 miles within 10 years (1986)". .... mind you, it is a lovely shade of gold and the brown vinyl roof is as well presented as Shaws comb over ..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQurTTUItWE&t=268s

Simon Telfer

The 'e' is the only current Honda I like. Perhaps because drove an (then) old but immaculate 1 owner original Civic in the mid 80s. It was still a wonderful car and the 'e' captures some of that.

Robin Capper

No, there are plenty of distinctive cars, this just isn't one of them. It's not good looking enough to be Chinese. Why can't Honda rub a little of the magic from the 'e' on the rest of their range?

Carl Pickering

In 80s was installing some office furniture in the call centre of NZ Leyland (NZMC) Head Office parts division. Operator took a call and, presumably muted mic, and called out 'This guy wants a price for complete wiring loom and injection for a XJS!' Whole room erupted in laughter, never heard what the outcome was...

Robin Capper

Doing the look at photos before listening thing, had to zoom into the badge to tell that was a Honda. Car styling and form factors are so generic now its sad.

Robin Capper

Not a fan of twin headlamp conversions. In fact is there any aftermarket headlamps that don’t make the car look Barried?

Giant Iain

Borgward engines look good. Like a pretend twin cam with a carb stuck on top. Also, are neither of you familiar with the BBC Rad-Mac 'My toe hurts Bettie' vocals to go with the annoying/dull wood pigeon?

Seth Kennedy

A set of Moretti headlamps on an ST200 mondeo no less! Nothing but premium pics used.

Kevmond

So Gentlemen in my friends group chat we've been discussing what the best looking interior is in a car so far we've got a 60's Ford Thunderbird and Roll Royce Ghost. What say you ? Cheers

Elliott W

My 92 Ford Taurus SHO has the same wheel, different logo of course. That was Ford North America's 1st gen airbag wheel for just about every car and minivan from 1990-1994. The 2nd gen air bag wheel was similar but had some curves at each end, started seeing those around 1993 in some of the cars.

Ed Nicholson

My 1980 W123 300D had a bit more to its engine bay, not least because of the extra cylinder. Sadly there seems no way of posting a picture on these threads :(

Nigel Hancock

That wand _is_ long! Like an old fashioned tractor unit on an American truck long. Makes me feel the need to wear a net backed cap and smoke superkings...

Choochomatic 3000XL

I nearly spat my tea out when Richard was trying to describe the position of the tattoo on the man's thumb elbow. It reminded me of an funny article on The Onion about a writer who is no good at describing hands. https://www.theonion.com/frustrated-novelist-no-good-at-describing-hands-1819575314

Kenneth Lau

I had some fake Morette lights on my Opel Manta 2x ford Capri lights fixed into a fibreglass rectangle. It was a cheap aftermarket way to cure the fishtank look of the original headlights.

Firstdan2000

Bloody hell morette lights, I had them on my sapphire ‘cosseh’ on my Vauxhall nova, my mk2 Astra gte & my Renault 5 lol. I think I still have the Sierra ones

joe brudenell

I always think they let an apprentice plumber loose in the Jaguar engine bay.
