Show notes 113

Sorry, due to an error the wrong show notes were posted giving a surreal, context-less series of pictures and nothing else. This probably made as much sense as the normal notes anyway but here we go with the proper version. We lead with Tom Selleck as Magnum, P.I. because, well, why not? Then posters for the Manta films and that Norwegian movie that hopefully a listener can explain to us at some point. Then we have the glorious underdog that is the Skoda 130 LR, the blacked-out baddies’ cars from Condorman (they were Porsche 911s as it turns out) and finally Harry Metcalfe back in the day, with an SAAB but sadly not a moustache in this case.

Comments

For all the German listeners. Manta Manta is now available on Netflix! It is all you would hope for. Bad acting, mediocre script, perfect attire and more tuned mantas than in any other film. In other words, it describes manta guy to perfection. Well worth your time! 10/10

Condorman! There's an obscure reference

Colin Kao

How widely known is it that the Magnum Ferrari was delivered to California for the show by P.J. O'Rourke? His 1980 Car and Driver article about delivering a Ferrari from New Jersey to Hollywood to be used in a film reveals the name of the film to have the same name as the Magnum pilot, ("Don't Eat The Snow From Hawaii").

Battles

The Manta Manta Film actually used to be quite popular in Germany. It's not some obscure manta driver movie :D The Shake Crate show - a show where Johnny tries to guess the contents of a crate by sound by shaking it with different types of heavy equipment

Dieter Lottmann

I think more manta banter might involve the near miss 'film ending shunt' from the opening scene (Which can be seen at 1:18) https://youtu.be/qyZuulKTTvA

Just to chip in on the rotary volume knob discussion, there's a YouTube channel where some bloke reviews rotary knobs and all that https://youtube.com/c/KnobFeel

Amongst this week's podcast the talk of the central locking air leak and the econometer caused a chuckle as it reminded me of how my VW California occasionally lets out a moo. A slight design flaw that is common enough that you can find the parts needed to resolve it by googling for "moo valve". Top work as always chaps. P.S. I'm going to keep my eye out on collecting cars in case a Mitsubishi Jet Towel Tommi Makinen comes up for sale, proper investment opportunity I reckon 😉

Thank you for clearing up the auto box parking quandary, as someone who occasionally drives his 1948 Chevy 3100 pickup with a 5.7 V8 and has a habit of being quite twatful by standing on the brakes to smoke the rear tyres, the handbrake shoes are a little bit worn and the handbrake doesn’t really hold on any sort of incline. I’ll feel a lot happier just popping it in to park and not have to worry about it rolling away.

Mark Sheridan

Growing up my family had a gold opel manta gt/e with beige seats, the sunroof leaked so was welded shut. If remember rightly had to sell as my mum was learning to drive and was way to big a car so ended up with a Ford fiesta pop plus

John Hempson

Richard, if you've moved to the Bristol/Bath area you will see plenty of hot air balloons, it's one of the busiest areas in the country. I was at Bath Uni along time ago and we had a hot air balloon, it was mainly farmers who got annoyed by them as they scare animals...

Chris Lincoln

Since u’ve mentioned Thunderbolt, the movie where they dramatised the Evo III to be made in a shed, only to be totalled on exiting the pitlane. So much for my childhood memories.

Wilson Lin

And a Twatometer gauge would make for an ideal S&S sticker.

Brendan McAleer

I nearly fell out of my chair when you mentioned The Littlest Hobo. It was mostly filmed in Toronto, and was a CTV staple for many Canadian kids of the 1980s. I had no idea it made it across to the UK, as it wasn't really a thing in the US. By the way, the Mitsubishi Jet Towel movie would absolutely be set in 1990s Hong Kong, and star Jackie Chan. Reason being, Mitsu underwrote most of Jackie's movies, and he often featured Mitsubishis, up to and including concept cars. There is a Jackie Chan special edition Evo, and it's worth going to look up the trailer for Thunderbolt, where he plays a Mitsubishi racing driver (who punches people).

Brendan McAleer

To be read in the style of Alan Partridge " Oi Porter STOP GETTING Cyril's car wrong" you stated that the orange got stuck under the brake pedal of his manta but in a previous episode you said it was his mk1 scirocco. Or are you saying his had an unfortunate incident twice with a escaped orange?

Russ Hill

I had a Capri, sold it to buy a Manta but didn't really bond with it and missed the Ford 'scene' so I ended up with another Capri. The Manta is technically a better car and had a wicked Burberry style Recaro interior but the Capri just felt more likeable.

Sam Houghton

Managed to find a copy of Manta Manta. Watching it now. I won't spoil the surprise. It's a very special thing :-)

Dark Newt

This episode was a blast back in time - my dad owned both an Opel Ascona and a black Manta coupe with a beautiful orange interior. He was a maths teacher and contrary to your comments about it not being a family car, the Manta served us well. I particularly remember a holiday in it to France for 3 weeks with 4 of us in it. Coming back my Dad had loaded us up with booze and I was resting my feet on boxes of cheap French beer. Coming through customs 9 year old me was so pissed off I told the officer exactly how much booze we had. He laughed and waved us through despite my dad’s embarrassment. Happy memories!

Jonathan Lambley

OMG! Condorman! that's one from deep in the memory banks!

Michael k-b

Is it strange that Magnum PI is different without the associated theme music? Smith and Sniff would have the same problem?

Paul Smith

A very good point.

Smith and Sniff

Perhaps you could record a directors commentary style track for the Norwegian film which we can all listen to as we watch it?

Mat Guest

Lest we forget one of the more majestic and long-lived moustaches in the automotive world - that of Gordon Murray.

Martin Mees

On the subject of newts, you should name them all "Tiny". When someone asks why, simply reply "Because he's My Newt"

Ben Backhouse

I thought I recognised the bloke from Manta, Manta. He played Hugo Stiglitz in Inglourious Basterds!

Dean

How was the roof removal done? Two people grabbing it and scurrying off in a hurry before Tom wellies it away?

Fergus McIver

Mantafahrer ("Manta driver"), the male owner of an Opel Manta, who is an aggressive driver, dull, lower class, macho, and infatuated with both his car and his blonde hairdresser girlfriend. I has no idea I was macho. It was simply a convenient step up from a Mk5 Cortina.

Firstdan2000

I thought I was the only person on earth who remembered Condorman

Simon Barrett

I bloomin loved Condor man!

Chris Jarrett

I hope the responsible have been sacked but then reinstated due to industrial action

Dmitri

Manta Manta Trailer - https://youtu.be/fG1EAwxZEtk - or perhaps Smokey the peroxide bandit.

Martin Dickinson

I enjoyed the impossible roof removal, but can’t contemplate listening to the original theme tune, the Magnum PI theme tune has been my ringtone* for about a decade. Somehow the existence of it throws absolutely everything into question. *No-one ever gets the pleasure of this though, as my watch is set to theatre mode and my phone is always on silent 😞 edit: I’ll give the Littlest Hobo a go when I’ve steeled myself, I remember it being on during the early morning “existential dread hour”, either before or after Benji, Zax & the Alien Prince. Two serials focusing on isolation and a lack of sense of place. Just what kids needed in the early 80s 👍

Ant Brown

I've just this minute finished watching an episode of magnum PI as we're working our way through the box set as my husband's never watched it 🤣🤣 how freaky. Xx 😘

Sharon fitzmaurice

I like the lack of text, adds to the wonder and excitement of the pod listening 😂

Alex Foster

I think it is. Top Saabing too.

David Jones

Pictures speak a thousand words, and in true Smith and Sniff sense, those words follow no clear narrative whatsoever

George Foster

Has the text been lost in the process?

Robin Johnsen

Sure looks like it Richard Major, watch Jonny's latest Late Brake Show for even more of a clue

Nigel Hancock

Is that a young Harry Metcalfe?

Richard Major

Condor man ohhh Betty
