Hello again. You might notice this week’s podcast sounds very, very slightly different which is because a) Richard was recording from his new shed and b) it was late evening and, without mentioning it, Jonny and Richard were both having a beer. Right then, what have we got here. Well, we lead with a glorious image of freshly-made Metro 6R4s. Not sure if this picture was taken at Cowley, where Austin Rover’s competition department was based, or at Longbridge where the cars were made. Either way, who could have guessed this photo now depicts a value in the millions. We follow with the information board for the mad mountain Jonny climbed, a picture of Burt Reynolds just because who doesn’t want a picture of Burt Reynolds (gravy; not shown), the companies that will be taking part in the inaugural Stellantis rally challenge, the high-forehead Skoda Roomster, and the zany legend Su Pollard. Mokka just out of shot. Maybe. Here are some links…

The Great Slate show - join Jonny as he travels through Snowdonia, seeking the best metamorphic rock in the region..

I'd forgotten about the bow ties.. I worked at the local Safeway in the very early 00's. I started off on the checkouts then the customer service desk. I was 16 and had a 50cc Derbi Senda before I could drive a car. I must have looked like a motor cycling waiter or even a stripper with my bow-tie poking out of my leather jacket!

Sam Houghton

Mitsubishi Jet towel alert 🚨. I spotted my first couple of jet towels when taking the kids to cineworld last week. I’d like to think the cineworld procurement officer is a secret smith & sniff podcast enthusiast

Luke Pearson

The Daihatsu Mira Walkthrough is an excellent option. I would also propose the Honda N-Box.

Pete Young

I always wanted a Skoda Roomster, but only so I could nick a letter B from some other car and add it to the beginning of "Roomster" so I had a Skoda Broomster..... Cheers Mike Broom, AKA Broomster. Shrewsbury.

Mike Broom

I bloody love your podcast. Tatras, Dastardly & Mutley, foreign rail announcement jingles and glory holes - all my favourites!

Anthony Daniels

Right then, you two. I know this won't be THE most high foreheaded car but it popped into my brain as soon as you got onto the theme. My very sprightly 91 year old grandad regularly makes trips to the garden centre in his Renault Modus.

Rather than taking Smith and Sniff stickers to the Goodwood Festival of Speed it might be worth taking some white stickers to allow those in the know to doctor the signage to the name of the steam powered perv fest devised on this podcast. Incidentally, I also had the Safeway Saturday job in the early 90's while doing my A levels. Bloody awful - being made to wear a bow tie and calling the managers Mr for £3.18 an hour. Couldn't stand it either.

For your car forehead q, I offer three examples. -One is the Noppo ("tall boy") Style, a Japanese form of exaggerated kit car modelling that would be completely obscure had not one of Hot Wheels' designers been from Japan, and created a Bosozukuish coupe and Mk 1 VW GTI with the treatment in 1/64 scale. -Second is the Daihatsu Mira Walk Through which, well, just go look at it. That's a fivehead. -Third is the Detroit Electric high roof from the early twentieth century. At that time, BEVs were marketed to the wealthy, and particularly wealthy women (they are mentioned in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novels). The high roof versions were specifically designed to accommodate ladies' enormous hats, which were *ridiculously* ornate at the time, to the point of having multiple dead birds nailed to one's hat.

Brendan McAleer

Oh wow, that Pixis Mega is VERY forehead-y. Excellent.

Re the new Stellantis Opel/Vauxhall Astra, a short drive video from a Grimsby Vauxhall dealership appeared on YouTube a couple of days ago, so they’re just appearing at dealers now. Might be the perfect time to blag a press car for a week.

Richard Fitton-Perkins

I know a guy who has a Samba GpB ;) We did a feature article on it for the 2022 Legend Fires North West Stages Rally spectator guide. Sadly the engine let go on the first stage :( Here's a photo of it letting go... https://www.pro-rally.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/22NW106d_.jpg

I like reviewing the photos and the links before listening to the episode. The lack of context makes me chuckle…

Adam Russell

I'm afraid that took me down a bit of a kei car wormhole. Why on earth don't we get these in UK. The Honda S660 looks fantastic. I think we've only had the suzuki cappuccino which came close to these proportions?

Martin Stephenson

On the high forehead side of things. Toyota Pixis Mega, the fabulous kei car. It's the Bruce Forsyth of the auto World, having the forehead and the chin. Nice to see you... 💪 https://images.app.goo.gl/smaojwQZPv5xABMA8

I seem to remember that there wasn’t much onsite parking for new cars at Cowley (I visited a few times around the time of the photo in connection with my college studies)

Chris Squirrel

Is it? I wasn’t sure ‘cos it looked quite spacious. I know the 6R4s were built there.

Smith and Sniff

I used to work with charges and restrictions on people's houses, and I do remember there being something from the Land Registry about property fraud. If you own your home outright and there's no mortgage or other charges, there's very little you need to do to actually change the owner. There's no mortgage company to pay off and so don't need to prove who you are to them. The Land Registry did put something up saying if you leave your property empty for extended periods, you can speak to them about putting a restriction on the title to help guard against this.

Tim Organo

It's Longbridge in the photo :)

Chris Squirrel

There's a / missing after .co.uk from the link url for the mountain walk

Mike Taylor

Pawl link isn't working for me..
