We start this week with a lovely pic of a Mercedes S-Class from 1979, which is definitely the year Jonny was born, followed by a car from the year Richard was born, an Jaguar XJ-S. Yes. Finally, we have Andrew Ridgeley as he is today, kind of rocking a friendly consultant doctor vibe don’t you think? Now, some links…

Fascinating! I always wondered which Saab she drove after listening to this: https://youtu.be/-YTyORgdN9w

autoscribe74

'93 has to be an Aston Vantage V550

James Blyth

1980 - Audi Quattro. Mike drop. ;-) Looks like it was an interesting year: https://www.autocar.co.uk/slideshow/40-years-notable-new-cars-1980

Mat Moore

Well I am pushing my luck a bit because I think they didn’t technically go on sale in until Jan 88 but start of production and media launch was 87.

Thomas Causebrook

E34 was an 89 release I believe?

Anik Adamali

Thank you for so comprehensively covering my native county! Andrew Ridgley when he moved down drove SAAB 9000 Turbos, then 9-5 Aero wagons and possibly that was replaced with a if my memory serves me a 9-3 Turbo X wagon. Reason is I used to work for the dealership group he bought from. Once had a conversation with him when he was considering a Lexus. Pre that job circa 1992 I girl I knew who worked for him in Hertfordshire in the bar he owned (or so she said?) said he had a white escort rs turbo, could never verify that. Anyhow our SAAB dealership as supplied Tori Amos (north Devon) with a gen 2 SAAB 9-3 Turbo Convertible after she pulled up in her Range Rover after seeing it being unloaded from the transporter. About 2 years ago I clocked Rick Stein getting into a previous model Mercedes S Class in Padstow, he used to have a second gen XKR Convertible probably I expect replaced by the 997. As for me 72 Mercedes S Class W116 as per Smithy in The Gumball Rally.

Cornish Rider

1987, so that means I have to chose between the Ferrari F40, Cosworth RS500 or the BMW E34.

Thomas Causebrook

exactly what I thoguth when they started blabbering about it being FWD.

Zoona

1975. I'd like to think I am a prosche 930 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_930), but probably more like the Dacia pick up (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dacia_Pick-Up). I think I would plump for the E21 (a 316 mind, with the single headlights) as we had one when I was growing up.

Zoona

Unicycles are All Wheel Drive.

Kevin Perham

Not a new release, but birth year car for me is ‘74 VW Karmann Ghia electric swapped. Also ‘92 Civic EG, also electric swapped. (HS graduation)

Kevin Perham

Also also, a unicycle would still stand up doing a burnout. It has a gyroscopic centripetal force acting on it. Buh-bye

Thom Gidman

Also, here’s a picture of Rick Stein with a defender 110…. https://www.rickstein.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Rick-Steins-Cornwall-TV-1536x912.jpg

Thom Gidman

84 I’m spoiled for choice! Testarossa, 288GTO, 205GTi & T16, 190E 2.3-16

Thom Gidman

'93 is largely shite for new releases OTSOT, but the Porsche 911 GT2 is the saving grace. Also, Suzuki Wagon R for a healthy dose of weird Kei Kar-ery

Choochomatic 3000XL

Damn, time flies. When I used to run @CarQuiz on Twitter (“Guess cars from evilly cropped pictures!”) many, many years ago, I occasionally tried to write funny blogs in English. Absurd idea, I know. One of them covered Year of Birth cars! And you know what; that damn website is still online with many of the CarQuizzes present and correct, including that YOB car blog from November-bloody-2011: https://carquiz.wordpress.com/2011/11/16/carquiz-soixante-neuf-blog-about-cars-from-soixante-douze/ . Guess going for that ‘72 911S in 2011 would not have been such a bad plan after all.

Jasper Maters

1993, so why not go for the Ruf BTR2. But realistically, probably a Porsche 968 Club Sport. Or the Passat B4 that I learned to drive on.

Vlad Tataranu

Yep seen them on the Dyfi Enduro and Mountain mayhem events, buggers were quick uphill too

Nigel Hancock

October 1975 had quite a few highlights apparently - BMW (E21) 3 Series, Ferrari 308, Lancia Monte Carlo to name but a few

Bruno Tramontano

1963 and I thought I was stuffed with dated old tat. But Merc Grosser, 911, Rover P6, DB5, Corvette Stingray and Alpine A110 - very happy!

Anthony Daniels

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o57JwibqCb8 A great video of the incredible sounding Honda RC166 250cc straight-six. I think they made around 65 bhp and revved to 20,000 rpm! 260 bhp per litre is not bad at all, especially back in 1966.

James Dilkes

E28 M5 😎

Theo Currie

One of the best sounding bikes ever made!

James Dilkes

I was mildly surprised the breakfast meat discussion didn't veer onto the subject of Volkswagen Currywurst. It's older than Richard, being produced as VW part number 199 398 500 A since 1973.

Brendan McAleer

Lamborghini Miura from '66. Or maybe a Shelby Cobra 'Super Snake'.

Peter Heamon

Love a pre-HE XJS in a period 70s colour. A minty one in Greensand would be 👌🏻

Damian Rigby

1984 was a bit of a weird year car wise, looking through a list of utter chod such as an Austin Montego, Rover 200, Lada Samara etc, then got to a Mercedes W124, Fowwwwdsssss RS200 & Testarossa. Would probably have to be the RS200

Mark Sheridan

Thats handy. Thanks. Off that list I quite fancy a https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Falcon_(XA) from 1972. Always liked cortinas.

Firstdan2000

As a child of 1985, I’ll be going for the Bentley Turbo R. In case anyone wants to play along with the car from the year you were born game, Wikipedia has this handy list of model release dates by year… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Cars_by_year_of_introduction

Chris Wyman

‘64, 911 or Reliant Rebel 🤔

Dave Smith

Hello chaps! Whilst listening to your latest ramblings I was SCREAMING at my speakers when you were babbling on about Rick Stein & Andrew Ridgeley inventing Cornwall, knowing full well that you had overlooked an absolute bona fide, 24ct, 5 star son of Cornwall. I was already drafting this message when, bugger me with a pasty, did you not go and mention him directly. By name. In relation to a totally different subject. ROGER TAYLOR! He was (& is) such a well-known, respected figure down there that in August 1971, whilst on a tour of Cornwall, the newly formed group ‘Queen’ played at the Driftwood Spars pub in St Agnes. The newspaper advert proudly announced: ‘The Legendary Drummer of Cornwall: ROGER TAYLOR’. Below, in a tiny font, is added ‘and Queen’. I shall send a photo of it via the email

Leighton Brown

‘82, Porsche 944. One day…

Ewan Dougan

The River Ouse is another one - there are 4 of those... The Ouse in Yorkshire, The Ouse in Sussex, The Great Ouse and Little Ouse in East Angular. Apparently 'Ouse' means water so they're the River Water. P.S. Thanks for starting my Monday off by giving me Careless Whisper as an unshakeable earworm to take to work :-D

Dark Newt

I remember the Ehrenlaut coupe when it was first mentioned in the press in 1955. Only then it was nearly always referred to as the Gullwing coupe.

Chris Rayner

I was born in March of 1982 so I'd take either the lancia 037 or the k10 micra if only for the fact can get it as the Nissan march

John Hempson

My first car was first registered in the year of my birth, 1948. It was an MG YA saloon. I drove it from 1966 until the late summer of 67 when I put it into a wall. There were no laws on tyre tread in them days. The rears were bald, and I lost the back end on a wet shiny tarmac surface.

Chris Rayner

I'm from 1968 so would have to go for a BMW 2800 CS, although it is also the year that "Africa's Workhorse", the Peugeot 504 was introduced, which remains a fond memory as my dad bought the family estate version in 1978 (no significant facelift in 10 years). it died in 1984 in an incident involving a customised Renault 12 when we were on holiday in the Vosges Region of France.

Richard Grove-White

I was born in 1981, so the year most British car models were axed. I guess it’s a Triumph Acclaim for me then 😁

Howard Rose

Thank you Adam, I appreciate the comment. We waited hours on the hire company driving down with a replacement car, and I remember Dad flinging a few fucks around when he saw the Avenger driving in. However, it turned out to be a peach. I'm sure it was a Talbot not Hillman OTSOT. The main reason I spent the holiday in the boot was the black vinyl back seats were so warm, skin was being removed from my spindly shorts clad legs. We drove all the way to London town, where I remember crying uncontrollably when we went to Piccadilly Circus, and there was no lions, trapeze artists or clowns in Bedford Rascals to be seen. Return drive covered Blackpool and York before heading for home. On the way to returning the car, I went with Dad and we were to get the bus back home. Indicating to turn into the hire place, a car stove right up the trumpet of the Avenger, punting it down the road some feet. Fortunately for me we were back in Scotland, so warm seats wasn't an issue anymore and was the way of the day, I was in the front, seatbelt free and ended up in the footwell. Had I been in the boot, I fear I may have become a bonnet ornament of the SIMCA that punted into us.

scott newlands

This story wins! 🤣

Adam

Can confirm; Rick stein does have a defender - at least I have seen him in one, but also a silver 997 cabrio which he has owned since new. It featured in his recent series where he went round the regions of France, in which he explained he loved it but always felt a bit self conscious about it - but now it’s older he doesn’t mind being seen in it. https://images.app.goo.gl/jRsd4KZJ9ekLn5T47

Guy Meagher

Electric unicycles are real and somebody near where I live has one. https://personalelectrictransport.co.uk/product-category/electric-unicycle/

John P

(19)79 you mean - yes we know his year of birth better than him...what a dingbat lol

Jon R

Can confirm they make off road Unicycles, I once did a 24hr Mountain Bike race and there was a few guys doing it on those. Other than the first second of “wow look at that” they just got in the way on both up and down hills. Cue much anger all round, I believe they are now banned from racing this particular event.

Tom Green

The year Jonny was born was the year my Dad punched and knocked out Cheggers off of Multi-coloured Swop Shop in a services cafe after he told me to fuck of when I asked for an autograph. We were on a family holiday in a hired Marina Coupe in baby poo brown which had blown its head gasket after travelling 80 miles from home, only managing to limp in a ball of steam into services around Scotch Corner. We were waiting for a replacement car and looking back, I think my Dad was on a hair trigger temper wise. After the services incident, we continued our holiday in an Avenger Estate in a royal blue with a white vinyl roof. Car was so good Dad considered buying one. I spent the holiday travel in the boot with specs with eyes on spring stalks and fake manky teeth, making other travellers laugh. Happy trip down amnesia lane, prompted by the year of Jonny's birth.

scott newlands

I'm a 1986 vintage, which is a pretty good year. Porsche 959, the LM002, Aston Z8 Zagato, E30 M3 and the Fooowwwdaaaa Sierra RS Cozzeh,

Richard Major

Can we talk about that horrible awkward high five / handshake / hand grab thing which happens at the end of the Rick Stein clip. It makes me cringe almost inside out.

Richard Major

The McDonald's Affogato is a budget friendly treat - Small Plain McFlurry - 99p Single Espresso - 89p = £1.88 Also, stirring a single or double espresso into a vanilla or choc milkshake is quite the treat.

Richard Major

Mangling podcasts here imagining Rick Stein in his rib cursing at John Travolta as he speeds past in his speedboat hoovering up creatures of the sea like a basking shark

David Carss

There were smaller engined race bikes. The Honda RC 166 was a straight six, 250cc and revved to 20,000 rpm

David Saunders

'82 911 SC

Al Scott

Happy Flant Day, fellas! At least where I live. AC was full blast today, btw.

Josh Hamilton

I’m rockin it as I’m the same vintage as a 1968 Dodge Charger and 1968 Porsche 911.. Sometimes it’s cool to be old.

Ian Miles

Pretty sure Dawn French wasn't far behind Ridgeley on the A30. Steve McFadden was probably stopped in Exeter services having a sausage roll when they both cruised past him.

Daniel Ferguson-Smith

You know what, when Jonny said 77 the other week I thought to myself, I’m sure he’s 79 as he started driving a year before me (97) but if I had to have the car for my year it would me the mk1 Astra or a manta GTE

joe brudenell

My late wife sat next to Andrew Ridgeley on a flight to Nice in 1988. He was utterly charming to her, though she said he was a little too delicate for her taste! Thankfully she preferred a 6'3" hulk build ;) She also had an great taste in slightly choddy cars. Carolyn I miss you so much.

Nigel Hancock

The Merc R129 was launched a month after I was born. Still to me the definitive SL. Have an aching for a 600 after watching Harry Metcalfe’s video on his and watching the speedo effortlessly swing past 130mph
