Euro Spec Vision contest was a fantastic segment that had me tearing up laughing. As a Dutch ex-pat living in America it's always amusing during my return travels to the homeland the absolutely shocking engineering marvels balancing precariously on predominantly old white males noses. Your persona descriptions could not have been more accurate. I would highly recommend Switzerland for your next euro spec vision spotting endeavors. The powerful mix of Swiss financial resources matched with questionable German styling and unmatched engineering depth leads to some truly shocking money no object face telescopes.

Did find the air con use or lack of quite amusing say it all about acclimatisation yet hides under loads of blankets when parky. Fair play as say each to their own but did tickle me

John Hempson

Most supermarkets have opticians, but beware they aren't all qualified to do a sight test. However if you have a recent prescription they can make up glasses to that spec.

Steve Morton

I'm 3 weeks into a french tour. Constantly amazed at the glasses but also amazed at how few opticians are here.....where do they get them.....?

I’ve just remembered, in Year 7, (1995) first year of comprehensive school, my form teacher was a guitarist in Dexy’s Midnight Runners, he’d been a music teacher for a few years then moved on somewhere else.

Mark Sheridan

I 100% agree with the metallic black thing, I changed my car last year after rebranding my company, went for a black & gold theme (free plug: JS Security) so swapped my white V90 for a black one, problem is, Volvo don’t do a solid black, just metallic. What a total ball ache it is to keep looking nice, especially for a work hack. Every minor flaw in the paint is exaggerated. Direct sunlight is the worst, it just doesn’t look all that great, but I think that’s mostly the main dealers fault when they made a pigs arse of applying the supagard treatment. It’s going to have a full machine polish when I have time.

Mark Sheridan

Jonny, I remember a few podcasts ago you mentioned about reconditioning your Dodge starter motor…would you be able to pass on the details of the company you use? My work operates the only running Fordson WOT1 ‘crew bus’ in the world but it’s starter motor has recently gone unserviceable.

Bradley Winder

I'm siding with Johnny on the aircon debate, none of the cars I own have it (to be fair, one of them doesn't have a heater either) and I've always considered it to be modern witchcraft.

Thom B.

Do we think that Toyota could get the deliveries ready for 8 June. 8/6 seems the perfect day for GRRRRR day. ☠️

Daniel Zeimer

A former coworker had similar but opposite opinion to Jonny. He refused to use the heater in his vehicles. Preferring instead to crack a window for ventilation and keep a blanket on his lap.

Jeffrey Smith

Why stop at removing the aircon? Why not get the seats and steering wheel upholstered with the skin of an agave cactus? Instead of a gear knob wrapped in rich, Corinthian leather, just mill it from copper and have it permanently wired to the battery. Encourage manufacturers to offer a 'Bee Pack'. Nothing special here. When you collect your shiny new car, it's just full of bees. Thousands of them, and they're all really, really pissed off. Madness.

We've been getting a few quite strongly worded emails about Jonny's weird air con stance. Might have to read them out in a future podcast. Richard

Futuristic Maestro on Steroids has just tripped my John Peel Band alarm. Richard

She teaches songwriting at the college of Music and Performing Arts. Sounds like a pretty good subject to me. Richard

It's been a while since I've posted on here but I just wanted to pop up and say that Jonny's thoughts on aircon are the ramblings of a psychopath.

The Scimitar GTE was an early resto-mod, Middlebridge acquired the rights to build the GTE & GTC from Reliant in 1987, along with all the tooling. The Middlebridge Scimmy had a fuel injected 2.9 'Cologne' V6 and there were revisions to the suspension to improve the handling and driving experience. And of course, PA also had a Middlebridge example. They only made 79 before Middlebridge went bung. I ran a Scimmy GTE inherited from my late Uncle, he'd owned it from new and it was one of the last 50 made by Reliant. It was a great tourer but I found the driving position too awkward to keep it long term. Shame really they were a fine looking car.

John Hammond

Trying to get the mental image of Jonny in the airport car park out of my mind, as maybe are the 800 or so people in the A380 that probably taxied past at the same time.,,

Daniel Smith

I don't know. I don't presume to know what content she teaches, how she presents her teachings, why she teaches, and to what end. Thanks all the same for the comment.

Tom Lanigan

Deleted, as people didn't get it was meant to be funny.

Euro Vision Specs is very true even amongst my neighbours here in France!!! I’ve resisted the temptation to join them!

Steve Morton

As discussed the RR does have a bit of the scimitar GTE going on. Is it just me or does the mk1 evoque have a bit of a whiff of maestro about it also? Always pops into my head when I see an evoque that it looks like a futuristic maestro on steroids.

Gavin Mulholland

Brilliant!

Al Scott

In a similar vein to Martha Ladly's career as a lecturer, Julianne Regan (shoe-gazing songstress, and singer from All About Eve) now apparently teaches at Bath's College of Liberal Arts.

Tom Lanigan

It'd also be nice to think that the suggestion of being "hairdresser's cars" is no longer a thing as people are realising that punching-down with 'humour' is not big and clever. Also, as if they weren't valuable enough, I think we all realised in 2020 and 2021 lockdowns just how incredibly important hairdressers are to keeping the wheels on civilisation! 😁

Ant Brown

Stick welding for those of us with an agricultural leaning - and in a hurry. #splatterfest

Maurice Barnes

Surely you won for silliest (sometimes automotive-related) podcast?

Ed Nicholson

Your point on MX5s is correct, I am 20, own an mx5 and have five friends who all own and have owned MX5s. I didn't meet them through the car I knew them all prior. I don't know anybody in my generation who thinks they are for hairdressers

Nathan Henstock

Ah, I think Jonny was just being silly there. The podcast definitely didn't win anything at the Autocar Awards. Apart from best medium-sized hatchback. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Great show gents, I was born in 74 so very much in the Gen X category, but I have been inching up the text size on my mobile recently, and that's with contacts and /or glasses.

Graham Dallas

Near the beginning of the show, was Jonny talking about S&S winning an award at the Autocar event, but then sidetracked himself with other details from the event? Or did I hear that incorrectly?

Ed Nicholson

Good news everyone! Richard and Jonny, you're both born before 1980, you're both GenX, which ran until the end of 1979. I know, I was one of the special editions that was released in mid May with additional looks, brains and charisma 😉. Think of me as the very opposite of a Cortina Crusader (poor reference, as they were Millenials, being '80 onwards). There are four kids in our family (me and my siblings) and luckily we're nearly all GenX being 1970- onwards, aside from my younger ('81) sister, who is obsessed with avocados. Loves them. That and Netflix.
