Show notes 107

Hello again. Welcome to the late-running show notes for episode 107. Given how low energy it was, perhaps the notes turning up two days late is appropriate. Anyway, what have we got for this week? Well, we lead with an image from Gone In 60 Seconds showing Nic Cage in his terrible jacket and Angelina Jolie looking like she lives in Bristol. Then we move on to an excellent example of the ‘hungry horse’ roof on older 911 cabrios - note the visible ribs and the way it sinks into the rear deck rather than following a smooth line - followed by Will.i.am’s terrible AMG collab, Nic Cage still in his terrible plasti-leather jacket and now leaning on the terrible Eleanor Mustang with too-modern tyres, the late LJK Setright, the VW Multivan, and the same car pictured with Jonny’s brother’s static engines. Now, some links…

I remember going on a hunt for car movies after watching F&F and GISS and found myself watching the original one and thinking it must be the longest car chase ever, in fact I’m sure he stole a less knackered Mustang in the same colour half way through the chase! Think it was not long after this The Driver, Dual, Vanishing Point and Bullett all got a viewing on my dads suggestion.

Agree on the Eleanor mustangs....99% are shit fiberglass smeared onto the panels that crack within a few years and are an absolute pain in the Brian to fix... I do kind of dig the interiors though.

If you're comparing Gone In 60 Seconds and Fast and Furious, have a look at the 1987 film No Man's Land, starring Charlie Sheen; FF1 is basically a remake of that, and I'd argue the Charlie Sheen version is better.

Formula Whine

A live audience would be excellent! Anytime you can make it up north would be appreciated also. Maybe even for a Late Brake Show Live one day!

Michael Lyth

Planned to listen to the show while driving so previewed the photo post before setting off. Recognised LJKS and was curious to hear what you said about him. Started reading Car in the late 70s, a teenager who often had no idea what many of his non-auto references (literature, historic and musical) related to, but he inspired me to find out.

Gentlemen, while I appreciate you doing your level best to keep the swearing to a minimum, the subsequent mention of, quote, "VTEC Foreskin" does seem to indicate that S&S is not exactly on the cusp of transitioning to family friendly fare. And yes, every "Eleanor" Mustang should be Panzerfausted into fibreglass smithereens.

Brendan McAleer

Shouldn't the Bear Grille be wet? In fact the whole car should be dropped in to Poole Harbour off of a Chinook.

A correction: Tye original Eleanor was a 1971 Ford Mustang customized to look like a 1973 model

Gordon Segar

Gone in 60 seconds with Nick Cage is a remake of a 1974 film of the same name. In the original version Eleanor is a yellow 1973 Ford Mustang fastback. Speaking of remakes the original Fast & Furious has a lot on common with Point Break, though doesn’t have Patrick Swayze demonstrating his sky diving skills (yes it really was him in those shots).

the Miami based celebrity

Neil Butler

That's a bit outside of second mention rules, I think. A textbook second mention would be "the former Black Eyed Pea" or "the glasses-loving music maker".

Smith and Sniff

Perfect second mention in the will.i.AMG Top Gear article: "Mr iam says..."

Fish used to be a gardener before he became famous, at someplace near me in the Scottish Borders, can't remember where probs on the internet somewhere anyway i toss that in to the ongoing saga of Marillion, im not a huge fan but my older brother had all their albums (well the Fish years) Warm Wet Circles was quite good building in a progrock sort of way to a crescendo with White Russian, all about alcoholism i seem to remember OTSOT must cheer myself up and listen to it again - have'nt heard it in years.

Robert Clay-parker

Yes it is!

Smith and Sniff

Niche fact: I think John's Cambridge is also called Eleanor.

Seth Kennedy

One day we will do a podcast recording in front of a live audience, I swear. And now you mention it, Caffeine & Machine would be a good venue, not least for its (near) equidistance. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Richard is moving to Bath, I don't know exactly where Jonny lives in Lincs but I'm guessing Sleaford (because of the Mods). This means that the halfway meet is no longer Baldock. I reckon that as the crow flies halfway is now Caffeine and Machine in Ettington. I'm looking forward to a Patreon only invite to the recording.

Simon Smyth

Off sick from work today so listened this morning, of course the next thing to do is watch Gone In Sixty Seconds. VINNIE JONES Oh my.

Adam McConkey

I forgot how cringeworthy that Gone in 60 seconds scene is.

Mark Sheridan

Excellent show this week - low energy seems to have have resulted in coverage of a vast number of topics!

Ben Backhouse

I feel like being married 5 times, as ol Nic has, should be illegal. If you haven't sorted it out by the third attempt, give up.

Evan Markby

If you take Nic Cage for what he is, a somewhat unhinged loon, then his acting is about cock on all the time 🥷

David Saunders

Bugger me, that Wi.l.l.i.-!-?@m Benz looks like an utter turd. It needs recycling immediately.

Rup (FastAsFunk)

Thanks, the show notes arrived 10 minutes after I'd spent 5 minutes trawling my spam folder for them...
