Podcast 107 - Rollback kicks in
Added 2022-05-08 17:00:04 +0000 UTCJonny's just got off a plane and Richard has been out drinking so it's a low energy show in which topics covered include Wherever I Lay My Hat lyrical confusion, the hungry horse Porsche, changing oil without turning the engine off, an unstoppable Austin Cambridge, reviews of the Mercedes EQS, Ford Puma hybrid and an excellent new book about the car industry, jabbing a wasps' nest after half a bottle of wine, Nic Cage's terrible jacket in Gone In 60 Seconds, Nick Knowles's motorbike clothes, the fashions of LJK Setright, liking the VW Multivan, Jonny's repeated drives to York, more bloody Marillion stuff, car delivery window mishaps, unlikely banger cars, snooker commentators on the short oval, cliches of car journalism, goth curtains, and smutty insinuations about static engines. She can do this all day!

Further to your discussion of the RR reminding you of a scimitar I have always felt the mk1 evoke reminds me of an Austin maestro? Is it just me?

2022-05-16 09:56:22 +0000 UTCJust read the whole of Inside the Machine book. Absolutely fantastic and inspiring! Got it mid afternoon Saturday and finished by Sunday night, couldn’t put it down! Cheers for the recommendation chaps :-)

2022-05-15 21:38:49 +0000 UTCI just had a bit of a panic in the car when this episode came on at an ungodly volume because I’d cranked it right up to hear the chat in the prog-rock fade outro of the previous podcast… it certainly woke me up!

2022-05-11 08:16:34 +0000 UTCThe book is called Inside The Machine by David Twohig.

2022-05-11 07:47:00 +0000 UTCWhat was that book recommendation again? Am currently on listen 2 as was half sleeping on a plane first time around, and can’t quite remember when it came up. Could be I dreamt it, if so … does anyone have a book recommendation about building cars? Nissan Qashqai’s ideally , as I’m committed to my potentially dreamed up book idea now

2022-05-11 07:32:55 +0000 UTCNeighbour has a Model 3 Tesla, one of the things I noticed as it was backing out of their drive was just how tiny the reversing light is, making it near impossible to see if it's in reverse.

2022-05-11 04:12:40 +0000 UTCAhahahaaaa - is this what Project Binky were doing an homage to in their opening credits?

2022-05-11 00:18:33 +0000 UTCI also really liked the closing credits, where the main cast would pretend to freeze frame as the titles scrolled, but stuff would always be happening in the background. I don't think the Naked Gun films were ever quite as funny as the series was, even though they were more successful. I found a YouTube link for the intros https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2-BJgllagA&t=1s

2022-05-10 12:30:11 +0000 UTCGod, completely forgot about that. And Billy Ocean worked at the Ford plant in Dagenham. Why they didn't do a Ford v GM duet of some sort I'll never know. Richard

2022-05-10 10:25:47 +0000 UTCSorry, show notes were running late. They're there now. R

2022-05-10 10:24:00 +0000 UTCThe 'killing off guest stars before they can do anything' gag from Police Squad was in the back of my mind when we tried something similar during the first series of The Grand Tour. Except our version didn't really work. Oh well. Richard

2022-05-10 10:23:24 +0000 UTCI always love listening to you two talk about anything. Yes the car journalists second mention thing has become a little tiring in a Sheemee150 sort of way!! Someone has to do a parody of him one day!

2022-05-10 09:49:24 +0000 UTCThe segment of the end credits reminded me of the title sequence to the criminally underrated and overshadowed series ‘Police Squad’ from the writers of Airplane and the Naked Gun films. Each week a guest star would appear in the titles but would always be killed off straight away, Abraham Lincoln was one of the cast but never featured in any episode and the continuity announcer would always announce a different episode title to the one shown on the screen. On a banger note, Japanese cars of many eras have long made popular bangers. The 1970s big Datsuns and Toyotas were popular. These days the big Lexus models find themselves on the oval as the supply of Granadas and Jags dry up. As Jonny says the Mk3 and Mk4 Supras are well regarded as strong cars with a decent turn of speed. Generally German cars are pretty useless, big BMWs and Mercs are not particularly strong. At a meeting in Oxfordshire in January I was witness to one team racing both a Mini Countryman and a 80s Maserati Biturbo saloon; neither making particularly good bangers.

2022-05-09 22:00:28 +0000 UTCMundane fact: Paul Young worked at the Vauxhall factory in Luton before becoming a pop star.

2022-05-09 20:17:59 +0000 UTCDoes the new ev test car not have reversing sensors? Are the show notes inbound?

2022-05-09 17:37:26 +0000 UTCIt might of been 'low energy' but still huge laughs from Sm.i.th and Sn.i.ff

2022-05-09 15:29:44 +0000 UTCIt always goes back to penises of some sort....

2022-05-09 13:43:06 +0000 UTCBath is a lovely place Rich. Crap for cars in the city but the roads about there are pretty good if full of cyclists.

2022-05-09 07:57:51 +0000 UTCBollox! and you was doing so well not swearing too. Maybe next time... It is kind of fun to set little challenges like that. Cheers for the pod.

2022-05-09 07:14:54 +0000 UTCThird time, think the first when it was still YouTube videos, as a saddo I have probably listened to every episode at least 4 times driving to and from work!

2022-05-08 20:32:17 +0000 UTCAt the end of the badge on the William.G you’d have to sharpie Stewart… wonder if it has a very high compression ratio? Maybe around 15:1?
Ben Aston
2022-05-08 20:26:36 +0000 UTCIt has, yes.

2022-05-08 19:30:24 +0000 UTCBizarre - got the Miami GP on in the background whilst listening and who should appear - Will.i.am wearing sunglasses designed by the same guy who does the BMW grilles

2022-05-08 18:20:19 +0000 UTCIs it me or has the LJK Setright rabbi/tennis thing come up before?

2022-05-08 18:20:14 +0000 UTCThanks for talking about how awful the Eleanor car looked from that movie. So many unimaginative people have ruined beautiful 67-68 fastbacks with a similar look because of that movie.

2022-05-08 18:19:41 +0000 UTCExcellent - more static engines smut🤣
