Show notes 105

Slightly later than normal because the Patreon website is being a twat we have some show notes to go with this week’s podcast. From the picture desk there’s Richard driving a GT-R in America, a grab of that now-deleted GT-R peacock ad, a GT-R and mk2 MR2 without boot spoilers, an El Camino being cool (?) and the surprisingly nice new Toyota Venza. Now here are some links…

I have been in America on holiday for a couple of weeks (I, like Richard, have an American wife). The Toyota Venza is a very nice looking car - a sort of American Jag F Pace. The old one was hideous.

I meant to finish why don't you pitch Smith N Sniff to TV? Have a bigger protector over your ideas which got you to number 1?

Paul Smith

Btw maybe a stupid question, but I kept seeing twitter messages pop up on how Jonny's ideas are being used on other motoring channels. Thought I would post here as Rich has attended all of the events too. Yes people have interviewed for some time in different guises but I thought Chris Harris was happy that part of the main show had stopped? Pod cast since 13th April just looked at dates haven't listened to any. I played a lot of cricket but sorry don't trust certain presenters opinions?

Paul Smith

Weird - I have used Gmail ok

Jon R

Yup I tried the "and" first and the ampersand second neither worked. I used a Hotmail addeess

Bill

Shellfish, or selfishness?

There’s an EV truck startup from Sweden called Volta. Trucks range from 7.5t to 18t in capacity. https://voltatrucks.com/press/volta-trucks-reveals-its-full-electric-7-5-and-12-tonne-volta-zero-variants No doubt John Travolta has an order for a fleet of Volta trucks - just think of the amount of shellfish he could transport next time he visits Norfolk.

One drawback of the idea of used U.K. cars for US military personnel would be even more cars dumped around Norfolk at funny angles where stick shift averse Americans have wrecked clutches and gearboxes.

Speaking of GTRs, it's a shame Europe won't be getting the next Z. One of the architects behind the R35 GTR is the program head for the new Z, and he (will not admit this publicly) is an ex member of the infamous Racing Team Mid Night from the 1980s and 1990s. Drove a 600hp R32 in-period, which he still has. The R34 GTR is basically a shoestring budget rework of the R33, and is generally accepted to be best of breed, which means this new refreshed Z could be quite the last hurrah.

I tried the hello@ email but it apparently doesn't exist according to Microsoft About your search for the dealer that took delivery of your Dodge have you tried Carfax.com I have seen their reports go back to the 80's. If not Cal DMV will have it but I'm sure you must have a connection at Stellantis that could get Chrysler's records the US Gov requires records are kept until a vehicle is reported destroyed. I'm not sure what happens when a car is registered overseas. I'm am in civil law enforcement for the US government and have seen VIN reports on classic cars built before yours. BTW someone driving a Dodge Charger in California during the 70's wouldn't be smoking a fag the correct term would be a heater or (lung) dart.

Interesting point regarding the risk posed by the identification of forces personnel by their cars. UK personnel used to have different number plates while serving in Germany ("BFG" plates) which were discontinued after similar concerns during the Northern Ireland "unpleasantness" of the '70s and '80s.

Daniel Smith

I live near the two US airbases in Cambridgeshire (not Norfolk!) - Lakenheath and Mildenhall. You see a lot of very obviously US-spec cars round here, some of them still on US plates as they must have a grace period when they arrive before they need to get them UK registered. You also see some of the really big stuff like LWB Dodge Rams parked up on people's driveways and never moving, the owners having found out they can't park the bloody thing anywhere!

https://www.litchfieldmotors.com/nissan-gtr/stage-upgrades/ Stage 4.25 is apparently a big Litchfield thing. I don’t get car mapping stages?? It’s a weird make your own ideas up thing?

I had a mk2 MR2 without a boot spoiler. I didn't actually like MR2s at the time; I only bought it because I needed a car so I went on eBay motors and sorted it by auctions ending soonest for less than £500. The MR2 was the first car that appeared (apart from a rotten mk3 Mondeo and a once-red-now-pink Corsa C). I won the car for £410 (which was less than the seller had spent on replacing the clutch 2 months prior). I bloody loved that car, and eventually grew to like the "cleaner", less busy look of them without the spoiler. It's still probably the best car bargain I've ever had, but sadly I sold it before MR2 values jumped up. I was only 20 when I owned it and I did fall victim to the notorious snap-oversteer on one occasion, with the car avoiding any significant harm (except a few minor scratches) and eventually coming to rest about 2 inches away from a very large tree...

Superb as always 👌

Agree re spoilers. And the dealer selling the MR2 regularly has sublime bits of 90s erotica. Particularly tidy Audi Coupe in duck egg blue at the mo
