Hello again. Talking, as we are in this podcast, of sports people in free cars, we start this week with a picture from a gentler time of the Aston Villa squad with an Montego. Then we've got evidence that Tiger Woods's smashed up Genesis DID have stickers on the doors after all, a promo pic of Last of the Summer Wine that will explain nothing to overseas listeners, Richard's new e-Up cowering before his Range Rover, Celine Dion and her late husband René Angélil, and the last Mondeo coming off the line in suitably low key manner. Now, some links...

The demise of the Mondeo reminds me of this beauty of a fly on the wall series from the 90s. Salesman and their company cars! https://youtu.be/CQsMFQZa8os

Hamilton Lewis definitely drives a champagne silver W211 E Class Mercedes in Elegance spec. Probably riding on 18's.

Simon Barrett

There is also the very odd phenomenon where the Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris share bodywork and interior in some bits of North America.

Ed Storer

Good shout. I was hoping they’d mention it, but can’t think why. I once had one as a rental car, had an unfortunate incident backing into a post, so took it to a building site on a wet day to slide around in the mud before taking it back to Avis.

I spent most of the podcast screaming ‘FIAT 500’ at the stereo…until Richard actually mentioned it. I was in Italy when the 500 went on sale in 2007. There was a lot of hope riding on it - even outside the car world - as a saviour of the FIAT brand after a few years of utter dross.

Funny you mentioned Celine and the Mazda2 so close together, as there's a phenomenon particular to French-speaking Canada called "the Quebec Special." It's a bare bones model (usually a manual transmission) that doesn't really sell anywhere besides Quebec. Further, the largest Mazda dealership on the planet is in Mascouche, Quebec. Thus, it would be entirely within regional character for Celine to be on the rev limiter in a stripped-out Mazda2 sliding across the cobblestones of old Quebec city, like a three-octave-range Gilles Villeneuve.

Roy Orbinsons version of I Drove All Night clearly the best. Norwegian The Dogs has a pretty cool version: https://open.spotify.com/track/2X2jxwcaAe00HiR1T94ZBB?si=bArrOjVYScq24I1nZaMtMQ&context=spotify%3Asearch%3Ai%2520drove%2520

I have owned a Mondeo estate from new for 7 years now and covered 80,000 miles in it and although not exciting it’s comfortable quiet and has been utterly reliable….

Alex frost

last of the summer wine was, is, and always will be absolute dog shite. i hated being forced to watch it as a kid. and my parents STILL watch it when i go back to see them.

Zoona

Does the e-up! lose its glove box in favour of a flatcap box? What's it like for whippet space in the boot?

Richard Giles

I prefer Saleen Dion the aged hippie who is an American Muscle and Performance car specialist

Cornish Rider

Can anyone picture Celine Dion driving herself anywhere? But it’s hard to write a good song about having your driver take you on a long drive to see your lover.

Tim Gilbery

Prefer the Cyndi version to the Roy version but the videos Roy has a 64 Ford Galaxie 500 and Cyndi a 38 Chevy Master De Luxe so a win for Roy. The recorder Celine tribute is indeed side splittingly hilarious. Finally the Mondeo, otsot, i have a mk4 Estate and it is indeed cavernous. mine also has the 5 cylinder 2.5 turbo petrol engine as found in the Focus ST. Surely the true heir to the Volvo 850 T5 estate. If i won the lottery the first thing i would do would be to put Focus RS running gear in it and 400bhp, true sleeper wagon (it surprises a lot of things as it is!!)

Tim Lewis

Volkswagen Sharan current shape from 2010, original from 1995.

Adam Clauss

The production R35 Nissan GTR was shown at the 2007 Tokyo motor show, and was released December that year.

Richard Major

Can’t decide which version of Heart Will Gone on shall be played at my funeral. 🤔

Alexandros Theodorou

Oh, Guys Brut Spooorsa! Is amazing!

david marden

Last of the Summer Wine was on in the US on select PBS stations

david marden

The modern Fiat 500 has been around since 2007 with some minor changes. EDIT: you just said that in the podcast. My brightest moment has just been flushed down the toilet :D

Micke J

Cyclist here. I can confirm that cycling shorts (aka bib shorts) do indeed have a chamois crotch section. It vaguely resembles the shape of a saddle and cushions ones, urr, gooch. Fortunately they’re not made of dead animal, but a technical foam arrangement stitched in a way to avoid chafing.

Tom Prestridge

I've only been able to listen to the first fifteen minutes before some inconsiderate person asked me to do some work. Now I have LOTSW as an earworm and I'm doomed to spend the whole day on hold to the Bradford & Bingley Building Society in my head.

Dark Newt

I had a Mondeo as a company car back in the 90’s, Ghia x spec, did over 200,000 miles, as they gave me the car as part of a redundancy package. Great car never let me down, still around I believe….

Andrew Lyle Treweek

A colleague in wales has a 2014 Tesla s with free supercharging. Has a six figure mileage on it now. Very cheap motoring.

jon honeyball

Usual gems amongst the utter toss this episode - I did fear we would never hear about the Up! Thankfully eventually we did - btw otsot Tebay really isn’t that good, yes the foods nice but as someone who stops there a lot the service is pants it truly is your privilege to be a customer. Keep it up chaps.

Robert Clay-parker

I prefer the TLOTSW episode with the three of them sitting on a sofa, that in turn is on an old car chassis (apparently from an Austin Sheerline) and being towed by Wesley in a SWB Land Rover. OTSOT.
