Podcast 99 show notes

Well here we are again and what do we have in pictures this week? Well, we start with the VW ID.Buzz, obviously. Then we have an alternative version which Richard created in Photoshop after someone on Twitter pondered what the Buzz would look like in all-over grey with those retro wheels off the last Beetle. Moving on, we have two pictures Richard took in January by the Bristol Channel, proving that it's not as brown and miserable as Jonny makes out. Then we have the slightly unfortunate Federal-spec Peugeot 505, Jonny's terrible Page 3 Ben Sherman shirt, and proof that Trex is a real thing and has been for years.

Now, some links...

We were hoping to provide a link to explain to non-UK listeners what Boots vouchers are but there doesn't seem to be anything suitable. Basically they were store vouchers you could only use in British high street chemist Boots. In the '80s they were a popular kids' Christmas gift from distant relatives, prompting the disgruntled moan, "Why couldn't they just send MONEY?"

Thanks a lot for that. We're seriously looking into it.

Daniel Achterhuis

I was a passenger in an ID.4 last week. Messing around with the infotainment, it was quite bad. How can VW sign off on something this bad? But ok, they approved the diesel cheaty thing so I suppose this is par for the course? ETA: maybe the things I pressed on the screen have registered by now, hope my acquaintance doesn't get too much of a shock when it catches up and plays Pantera's "Fucking Hostile" 😳

Chris Squirrel

For the displacement game, I have one that ties the W204. For a few years in the mid-2000s, the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup could be had with a 3.7L V6 as well as an 8.3L V10, equaling the W204’s spread of 6.4L.

I think you know us better than to think we'd find that boring. Well, I wouldn't anyway. Car is booked for delivery in under two weeks so I think - I hope - it's well clear of Emden docks now. Richard

I should add that other people are doing quite decent deals on e-Ups at the moment, but Drive Electric secured a batch already in the UK so you shouldn't have to wait too long for one. Not necessarily true of all places. And, true to their promise of fast delivery, mine's going to be here before the month is out.

Smith and Sniff

Fair enough. It's this lot: https://www.drive-electric.co.uk

Delighted that Richard has decided to go with an e-Up! I have never driven one but having had an Up GTI for the past three years, I can see how an electric powertrain would be a great fit to the standard car. Anyway… sorry to be the boring bearer of bad news but your e-Up will not dock at Bristol. VAG sends all European built/destined cars from their respective factories to the Emden port in Germany (Google Maps it, it is bloody huge) as a bottleneck before they are shipped to their new country. A California bound 911 could theoretically sit here for 3 weeks next to a Cannock bound Polo, for example. From there, the only UK ports that VAG ships to are the Port of Tyne, Grimsby, and Sheerness. Obviously, depending on where the dealer is located within the UK determines which port the car checks into. Given your car is 4 weeks away, it is most likely still sat in Emden. Sorry to be so boring.

Tom Banks

Richard, what was the name of *that* leasing company? Might have a gander. Can you mention it here on Patreonland?

Daniel Achterhuis

Looking forward to your thoughts on the e-UP Rich. Interested myself. Surely worthy of a low-budget S&S video, right?

Daniel Achterhuis

Thank you Richard, did not disapoint! Looking forward to the Halogen remix also.

Michael Lyth

VW Touareg gen 1 went from 2.5l diesel to 6l W12…

Chris Hall

This is fantastic.

One I can think of is Audi did a 2.0 4 cylinder and a 6.3 W12 for the A8

Adam Sillett

Marillion ended for me when Derek William Dick left. Scania PRT-range 6.7L to 16.4L. Yeah I know, I'll get my coat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scania_PRT-range

Simon Smyth

Extremely solid S&S episode, exemplar of the breed. The Ioniq 5's a bit Peugeot-looking, up front? Surprised the lack of rear wiper wasn't an annoyance - it's a real pain on salted roads. For displacement gap, shout out to the Wrangler, which won't win the game, but has a 2.0L-6.4L gap that includes diesel and PHEV options. Not bad range for having twin live axles.

Brendan McAleer

iii: Jonny's "bollock porridge" review of the e-Up is one of the best things on the internet, ever.

Simon O

b: Not true about Marillion, I like a couple of their albums but I'm not a fanatic.

Simon O

1: I'm with you on the VW ID3/4/Golf 8 infotainment/HVAC controls - they're awful.

Simon O

I've got three comments on this week's episode:

Simon O

My great uncle Bob used to send me and my brother £3 each in Boots vouchers every Christmas when we were children in the ‘80s. Such a specific sum, £3, I wonder how he decided that was the right number.

Tim C

Full Boots Voucher song required!

Michael Lyth

... of napkins?

Dark Newt

That shirt is the most "Max Power" thing that exists with no actual car content.

Rich Tysoe

Mercedes seem to be the masters in offering cars with big differences in engine capacity. The R129 SL was available with a 2.8 litre Vee or inline 6, all the way up to a 7.3 litre V12, giving a 4.5 litre gap, and the last S Class was available in foreign markets with a 2.1 4 cyl diesel, going up to a 6.5 V12, giving a 4.4 litre gap. I can't think of anything greater than 4.6 litres though, it's driving me mad..

Ollie Tebbutt

Oh go on, give us the full boots voucher song.

Mat Guest

Trex (tm) is apparently still available. It’s all vegetable fat lard substitute. Haven’t seen it in Waitrose for years, but still available on Ocado.

Chris Rayner

My mate was a massive Marillion fan... had been since we were 13 (30odd years ago). Sadly I ruined his whole life a few years ago, when I shared my discovery that Fish's real name is Derek Dick. He can't listen to it anymore & the commemorative framed gig tickets have gone from his wall.

Dark Newt

Retail is detail. Or something. R

Smith and Sniff

Jesus, Rich even photoshopped the reflection to match. Some keen attention to detail there.

Firstdan2000

That shirt looks like it belongs in JayEmm's collection

Nigel Hancock

Boots vouchers were terrible but I had a Nan who would send me cash with a note to say it had to go into the building society until I was an adult, still it did help buy my first car with it many years later but not what you want when you are 8yrs old

andrew philbey

'Nice' driver door alignment on the Federal 505. 2 more from them later.

Peter Heamon

I'd like to congratulate Jonny on his exquisite use of the phrase bollock-porridge.

Ronnie Whelan

I always used to wonder if Trex had a lot of glitter in it.

Peter Heamon

That 4th picture looks like a 'lifestyle' shot from a modern car brochure.
