Podcast 94 show notes

Hello again, lovely Patrons. We lead this week with a screen grab of D.I. Jack Frost with his old Sierra and follow it with a pic from the evo magazine archive of Richard in 2006 interviewing a conspicuously not-as-tall-as-he-is-now Gordon Murray. Then we have two shots of the bizarre, V6-powered Toyota Blade, and one of the Tatra 603 that Richard drove while making a Top Gear item about Eastern Bloc cars back in 2008. Finally, we have a photo of the one-off Bristol Blenheim 4S with Audi A4 Avant rear lights followed by proof that goats don't have top front teeth, the weirdos.

That Bristol... oof.

I watched this video about BMW's S58 & B58 engines the other day, it had a cool nerdy guide to BMW's engine nomenclature https://youtu.be/aEEGa5Gy_2k , skip to 1:50.

Matt Howard

Thanks I thought it was that πŸ‘πŸ»

hello@smithandsniff.com I believe

Snowy

Does anyone have an email address for the podcast? It’s hello@ something or other isn’t it?

Ashley Temple

Regarding small cars with V6's - the cool little Mazda 323F came with a 2L V6 back in 1995. Still one of the best looking small hatches around!

Roger SkagerstrΓΆm

BMW issuing a recall? Cool :p They usually just wait patiently untill the warranty runs out and then starts earning the real money πŸ˜…

Roger SkagerstrΓΆm

I sat in a pre-facelift Giulia once. The dealer had heaps of diesels that they sold for nothing. I think you could get one for around 270 000 swedish crowns. Ca 27 000 pounds. Brand new. But holy heck the interior was so horribly plastic and in general cheap. Same feeling as when one sat in a the early new A-class Mercs. Kudos to those who buys them though. The fancier ones look nice.

Roger SkagerstrΓΆm

That Tatra, there's one waiting to be restored over the road from my Office. Eastern European bloke that owns the garage seemed surprised that someone knew what it was.

Nathen Fredrick

I'm one of those annoying buggers who replies to both of you whenever you mention a Giulia on twitter. But I'm not going to stop because I absolutely love my Veloce. I spent a long time deliberating over what to buy and I really can't think of anything that I'd rather have for the money. They're fantastic cars.

Mike Follows

I would assume they would use it in motorcades or to transport the higher up's around?

Mat Guest

Great shout. πŸ‘ Can't help wonder if the police really have the AMG S-Class though? πŸ˜‚

Regarding ex-police cars, you may find this web site interesting... https://www.expolicecar.co.uk/used-cars

Chris Akrill

I've noticed how bootcut jeans really date a picture from the 2000s now Richard, was Gordon Murray a fan of only slim fit denim to save weight?

andrew philbey

Classic lols πŸ˜‚

Re: Tatras. I know a couple of guys out here who did some *very* long distance touring in a pair of T87s. They dipped the front wheels of one of the cars in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans. Here's a shot of the car on the Dempster highway, miles from civilization. Looks like a spaceship. https://i.imgur.com/1dmWLoP.jpg

We get the Blade here in NZ as came in as Toyota approved used import. Had no idea they were a V6, just thought a 'posh' Corolla (as the Auris is badged here). Seems a 2007-2010 one will be around nz$7,000-10,0000 (Β£3,500-5,000) for a reasonable condition car

Robin Capper

While the chipped cop cars may be bollox, I do know of an ex police trAAAANzit that supposedly had an LSD in it. My mates dad used to own it and it would happily do a roundabout in the slick

Darryl Mac

I saw a Corsa with a 3.0 V6 from an Omega in it. Lad used to run it at York Raceway, pretty rapid. Led to believe it still exists in his garage and has an occasional run up and down the local bypass…

Stephen Turnbull

I am the fortunate owner of a 535d touring with an N57 engine, arguably one of the best real-world cars. In April 2021 it had a recall for the exhaust gas recirculation cooler which was due to an issue that could potentially melt the intake manifold or cause a fire. My car was in BMW A&E for a week having fairly major surgery as I understand, but has run very well since that time. The recall letter is below Dear Sir/Madam This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the Code of Practice on Safety Defects, as agreed between the Department for Transport and the representative Trade Associations and in compliance with the UK General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Please note that this Vehicle Safety Recall is being actively monitored by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). We are writing to you using information supplied by the local registration authority. As part of ongoing quality analysis at BMW, it was determined that the cooler of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module fitted to your vehicle, may develop a coolant leak over its service life. In such instances when combined with the high temperatures of the exhaust gases can, in rare cases cause melting of the intake manifold and in extreme cases, a fire. Symptoms that could be related to this are: β€’ The low engine coolant warning is displayed to the diver β€’ The check engine and/or drivetrain warning massage is displayed to the driver β€’ A loss of power from the engine whist driving β€’ Smell of exhaust gas and a whistling noise from the engine compartment β€’ Smoke development from the engine compartment To make sure that your vehicle is in perfect working order, we would Ike to replace the EGR cooler. Please contact your preferred BMW Centre as soon as possible to arrange for the work to be completed,

Nick Mullins

I am led to believe the issue with the police spec beemers, is that forces should be following a more stringent servicing routine for vehicles involved with the traffic section i.e. idling for long periods (to keep car and occupants warm and to not drain the battery from all the extra computers and radio gear fitted) and then gunning it up to motorway+ speeds. Unfortunately some of these instructions were not made clear to force garages and therefore were not serviced appropriately. I think a few bent rods would have crossed the desk of BMW UK before they got to the bottom of it all… Also, sitzpinkler is a personal favourite (if only in well vetted circles)

Mk1 Scirocco windscreens are made of unatainium now.

david marden

A friend stuffed a 3.5L Toyota V6 out a mini van into a FX hatch, it makes for ridiculous going.

david marden

Haha, no! Smith had that Honda S600 and you guys are comparable in height to each other, so I didn't think anybody 6'+ could possibly fit in one!

Michael Cosgrove

Because... erm... we... we *sound* a certain height?

Smith and Sniff

At eating crockery, maybe.

Smith and Sniff

Ooh, that's good trivia. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Electric cars at low speed remind me of the alien spaceships from War of the Worlds. Reminds me of the nightmares I had as a child after watching that film.

Alex Mills

Goats. Greatest of all time surely?

Simon Smyth

I had NO IDEA you guys were so tall! I would have bet money you were ~5'10", definitely not over 6'!

Michael Cosgrove

On the subject of whistle exhausts, this video was what me and my dumb friends watched before YouTube was a thing on the internet: https://youtu.be/eSOSJ68xOBA

David Stafford

I think you are Correct regarding the Bentley. I also think his on/off love interest was played by Gwneth Powell who is famous for playing Mrs. McClusky in Grange Hill.

Matthew Bartlett

Think the Bentley belonged to his on/off love interest. Seem to remember he also had a mk3 Astra estate in later episodes

Martin Rawlings

Also In other different episodes of Frost. DI Frost drove about in a Volvo 240DL and a Bentley Eight.

Matthew Bartlett

Lotus did bring in a Toyota blade 3.5 into work once, they had bought it as a development car to put the auto gearbox into the Evora
