Podcast 93 show notes

Leading this week with some images of Gordon Murray's new T.33 before moving on to that distinctive ex-BOC office, the 1980s Weetabix advert cartoon characters, and the cover of that 'win a 924S' issue of CAR magazine.

Jonny's Late Brake Show video with Gordon Murray - https://youtu.be/xLVLeorCMRA

A fascinating urbex report on that old BOC site - https://bit.ly/3rd5JGF

Those 1980s Weetabix ads. Note that the early ones were basically a bunch of skinheads threatening you - https://youtu.be/1dQTiP0HjEk

The best of Sir Lord Alan Sugar on The Apprentice - https://youtu.be/Yxi6QDwQyLU

Still can't find any videos of buses making the noises we were talking about. Sort of hoping one of our listeners can put us out of our misery.

D’oh. Should have checked here first. Just sent him this on Twitter. Was going to send that or some of the videos of Volvo Ailsa’s. They had some real screamers.

Back in the mid 1980s I had a temp job working for BOC in that building in Windlesham. It was quite something. I recall the staff restaurant did a mean tuna and sweetcorn sandwich. My job was to input data into a spreadsheet and validate it. Had no idea what any of it meant but it paid well.

GMA's new HQ is just round the corner from Brian Blessed's gaff. They should get him to do the satnav voice

Remember that issue of Car, didn't enter as doubt they'd deliver to a 19 year old in New Zealand. Thought the BOC building was a prison when first saw the photo!

Chaps. Exceptional podcast. The Alan Sugar bit made me giggle and reminded me of Business Mouse… specifically this episode. Give it a watch. 5mins of joy https://youtu.be/Hr3eT3kZz4A

I'm assuming everybody knows about this, but surprised it hasn't been mentioned... Gordon's mk1 escort built by retro power. https://youtu.be/nSiG7oNXC6w

Gordon Murray also owns/owned a Hillman Imp, according to Classic & Spowahhhttahhh's Car magazine https://www.classicandsportscar.com/gallery/inside-gordon-murrays-eclectic-car-collection

So, were you tempted at any point to call Mr. Murray "GoMo"? I mean, he really needs to lighten up. All his cars, and his company, could be named after fax machines, so clinical. He maybe could have a consultant for creating vehicle names. Or get drunk enough to want to shout that he be called "GoMo" and name the T50 the "Fire Dragon" and the T33 the "Peregrine" or something awesome!

If Jonny lives a few miles from the Weetabix farm, he could quite literally 'piss in someone's cereal' - And we all know he likes a good roadside wazz.

'ere The Alan Sugar assassination was bleedin' bluddy bleedin' Smith and Sniff comedy gold. Nauw, get out'a my sight.

If Gordon thought the Smart roof was bad - https://youtu.be/w4B0rXvwX4I I'm sure he has nightmares about that 🤣

I've sent you an email, but I think the bus transmission you are describing is probably the Voith Diwa gearbox which was fitted to a number of buses from the 1980s onwards and has a very fluid change when properly set up. The buses you describe with the small gear lever are probably not 'pre-selector' gearboxes but are semi automatic transmissions. The lever controls either air values which change the brake bands in the gearbox (used a lot in Leylands of the 1960s and 70s - gives a whistle noise as it the valves open/close.) The self changing gears set up used an electric change to activate the gear bands which makes less of a noise. That was used in a lot of Daimler Fleetlines and Bristol VRT buses and later Leylands. These were not pre-selector gearboxes though, the gear lever was always in the selected gear. There was no clutch though.

Porsche 924 story: My ex-Brother in law bought a turd brown 924 many years ago. It was 'ordinary' except for the racing style gear box with first at back left. He took it to a local specialist. The mechanic saw the car and realised what it was and found some old photos. It was the winning car from the British 1978 (edited because I got the year wrong) Porsche 924 racing series. driven by Tony Dron. The mechanic was part of the team and worked on the car back in the day. They repainted it the colours it was originally: white, with racing stripes. Also, there was a Porsche engineer back in the day called "Hans stuck" he really should have been a vet.

Bus drivers from the 80's and 90's, could only have 2 syllable names, or names with 3/4 letters, no more. Ours were called Ted, Tony, Bob and Owen, the latter was to friendly with some of the children. My Mum had a Amstrad Emailer phone, absolute crock of shite from memory Also, the first ever time I travelled at 100mph was in a Porsche 924. I lad at Cub Scouts, his Dad had a Red one, and took 3 of us out in it one Sunday morning....God bless the 1980s

Jonny doing Lord Sugar - started ok and then became Michael Caine!

The Alan sugar bit was exceptionally funny

The bus transmission may be a Pneumocyclic or an Epicyclic as seen on this video: https://youtu.be/NWzsd6kX-cM I remember going to school in the early-mid ‘90’s in 15+ year old Leyland buses which had pneumocyclic transmissions fitted, which always fascinated me. Bloody hell guys I was almost suffocated from crying laughter watching that Alan Sugar video.

Harking back to the recent episode where you mentioned the electric Nissan Jonny drove. Currently on holiday in a remote part of the South Island of NZ and saw a mint blue IC Bluebird. Not the best photo as did that scrabble for the phone thing as it went by when I was cycling. A rare sight anywhere, bizarre to see one here! Blue Bluebird @ Tata Beach, Golden Bay, SI, NZ which is near the end of a dead-end road in the middle of nowhere. https://flic.kr/p/2n11yX9

The T.33 is a beautiful piece of design. I wonder whether there will every be a scale model so us poorer mortals could admire the design. I'm guessing that would go against Gordon Murray's exclusivity goals.
