Podcast 90 - The Queen's secret car collection
Added 2022-01-09 18:00:06 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard have some ideas about the cars Her Majesty rocks at the weekend.
Also in this episode, a Fiat with permanently sliding doors, keeping cacti in a Citroen Berlingo, driving a Renault Kangoo with the door open, remembering George Michael, undergoing stage 3 dental work, and Jonny's hatred of people shouting 'OI OI!'
Plus, cars for getting away from a court appearance, Bananarama's Band Aid Golf, cars that are too flash for the house they're parked outside, why hot hatches should always be three door, Jonny's latest engine-off emergency, and what's the ideal car for someone on a witness protection programme?
Comments
Talking about homeowners with disproportionately indulgent motors, about eight years ago as a student in Lancaster, I lived near a chap who maintained a modest two-up two-down terrace in a scruffy part of town (Studentsville), while dailying an absolutely mint BMW Z8. Today the car's probably double what the house is worth and I think we should all take investment advice from him.

2022-01-14 22:47:10 +0000 UTCB&M in Burnley is indeed at the bottom of not one, but 2 hills, approaching from different directions (Kudos to Mr Porter for this encyclopaedic knowledge of B&M's of the UK, a new book series perhaps) . Unfortunately for Jonny's new show "Coasting into Car parks" both approaches are via a set of lights so Jonny would have to either run a red or hope the lights are kind to him.

2022-01-11 09:51:52 +0000 UTCThe Fiesta ST must be the only 'normal' 3 door hot hatch left? Not counting the GR-Yaris as it's not a standard hot hatch per se. Agree about hot hatch needing to be 3 door though, hence I'm holding onto my Meg RS265 forever

2022-01-11 01:54:48 +0000 UTCThat is definitely a perfect ex-bank robber’s car. Could also be put into service if he ever fancied doing ‘one last job,’ too.

2022-01-10 15:43:20 +0000 UTCOh wow, I had no idea. I guess maybe it was easier to continue with a proven design than to come up with something new. Must stash this in my boring car trivia file. Richard

2022-01-10 12:27:29 +0000 UTCBack in the mid eighties there was a retired guy living in a modest bungalow near my girlfriend with a brand new bronze/gold W123 saloon (250/280?). Local wags story was that he robbed a bank. It was always kept absolutely mint.

2022-01-10 12:14:01 +0000 UTCI’m sure Gordon Murray has several Kangoos, all down to lightweight and has to be the over engineered pedal box.

2022-01-10 11:39:13 +0000 UTCHi Chaps, I have fond memories of my cousin and I bombing about in a Citron Yellow Series 2 Renault Kangoo that used to belong to our Grandfather’s business. As you can imagine, the door was “always sliding”, providing a rear passenger experience almost indistinguishable from that of a Vietnam War era Huey UH-1 Helicopter. To my surprise, the S2 Kangoo had a remarkably well considered, dare I say tillersmith orientated pedal box, that was conducive to a bit of heel-toe action. I suppose this was due to it being based on the Clio? Being a particularly leggy example, the Kangoo in question eventually developed a fuelling issue, whereby some serious clutch smearing at lower speeds was required to prevent a violent display of front end bunnyhopping, so severe that the engine mounts were left hanging by a thread. Sadly, the van was sold last year for around £400, but I shall always have memories of caning it around the Oxford Ring Road, rolling enough coal to single-handedly restart the industrial revolution. I have often thought the passenger carrying Kangoo is what the Matra Rancho would look like if it were made in the 21st Century. Keep up the good work on that side of things. Jack

2022-01-09 18:50:21 +0000 UTCThey really do mean what they said about the Discovery 2 diff lock linkage, some didn't have the internals but others just didn't have the cable installed to operate it from the hi-lo lever. Land Rover didn't think it was needed with the new traction control, however it turns out it still helps off road and kits were available to re-add it. My 2001 V8 Disco 2 didn't have the linkage, I didn't care to add it.
