Podcast 88 - Shaky's Christmas Cadillac
Added 2021-12-19 18:00:04 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard wonder what Shakin' Stevens drives and conclude that it must be some sort of bad Cadillac.
Also in this festive-ish episode, the Suggs scale of jerky singers, the money musicians make from Christmas songs, a new and extremely stupid seasonal lyric changing game, the annoyance of tiny ice cubes, how to get rid of things you don't need, and Jonny's eventful trip to Somerset in his Dodge Charger.
Plus, Richard has found a flaw with the otherwise fabulous Bentley Mulsanne, Volkswagen seems to be giving its cars nocturnal monobrows, and our first father and son listeners' stories section brings us tales of Germanic voice recognition and a restomodded lawnmower.
A huge, huge thank you to you, our Patrons, for supporting Smith and Sniff this year. We don't say enough how much it means to us, and how your generosity helps us to justify doing whatever the merry heck this is. By way of a small and rubbish thank you, on Sunday 26 December there will be a previously unheard bonus episode of Smith and Sniff exclusively for Patrons so ignore the message at the end of this show about a Christmas gap. That's only for those non-Patreon losers. That'll teach 'em, eh?

Gentlemen, thank you for a year of utterly bonkers entertainment. Enjoy your break and please carry on as deranged as ever in 2022.

2021-12-24 18:19:05 +0000 UTCI think Shakey would have easily afforded a Shad. He was the recording artist with the most top ten singles of the 1980s. I kid you not, look it up. Also OT-Mandarin-SOT, there are indeed five different tones or intonations that give each syllable in Chinese a different meaning. The word Ma, for example, means ‘horse’, ‘mother’ or ‘no’ depending on how you say it. Incidentally, one word for vagina is ‘zhi’ while the word for shoes is ‘xie’ - they do sound very similar and have the same intonation just to add to the confusion! Merry Christmas, guys!

2021-12-24 10:52:24 +0000 UTCMy dad has just started doing this (taking his glasses off to reverse). He also reckons he can’t see an analogue speedo with them on. Already has varifocals. He’s 63.

2021-12-20 17:32:50 +0000 UTCJonny and Richard, thank you for giving me something to look forward to every Monday! It really does brighten one’s week up. Given that I’m 22, I’ve also learnt a worrying amount about 80s/90s pop culture over the past couple of years. Perhaps consider it educational. Happy Christmas lads

2021-12-20 13:15:23 +0000 UTCThe GM diesel (which was based off the Oldsmobile 5.7L gas engine) also suffered from running problems due to the lack of a fuel / water separator in the engine bay. People who have rebuilt them with better head gaskets and hardware and added a separator get them working pretty well. Some of the hardcore Olds drag racers would use the diesel block and crank as a starting point for a boosted or nitrous injected engine since they were more robust than the gas engine parts, but dimensionally similar.

2021-12-19 23:37:05 +0000 UTCRegarding the restomod mower, I still have my dad's 1960's Landmaster 243 (made in Hucknall, Notts) rotorvator. Unfortunately the 3hp B&S engine died in the 90's and the only one I could get to fit is a 5.5hp I/C unit. Suffice to say, in use, it's like holding on to a very angry wild boar while it tries to tunnel to New Zealand.
