Podcast 83 - The most sinister Audi
Added 2021-11-14 19:00:04 +0000 UTCJonny is tired and Richard has a hangover so naturally talk turns to the most up-to-no-good Audi, songs with places listed in them, old episodes of The Muppet Show, trying to drive a car with no driver's seat, a Vauxhall in-house grot mag system, that time Jonny papped himself in an autonomous car, the Sultan of Brunei's paddling pool full of keys, and the financial peril brought upon Giorgio Moroder by getting involved with the Cizeta V16T. Plus, sleeping in an office, learning about dry risers, and the problem with Jeremy Clarkson's new farm car.

V8 Racing Prii (Priuses?) have been a thing for years in Japan in Super GT. First with an LMP1 V8 then a 5.0L V8 from Lexus.

2021-11-19 08:03:50 +0000 UTCExcept for the styling, I can see how the A7 can be more pratical for some than a A6 Avant. I remember my old Mazda6 hatback. Very easy to load, since you had more access. You can lean into the boot easier, since you don't hit your head on the edge of the roof. Also easier in a garage, since parking near a wall won't block your trunk from opening. I have a nice memory of the old mafia S8. I it was back in like.. 2006? My then boss had what I think was a -99 black S8. I was given the not so boring job of driving a visitor to the airport in LinkΓΆping (were Saab builds the Gripen). This was before speed cameras. I think we hit 145 mph or something... Still the fastest I ever driven. And it was so effortless - with "only" 340hp. Driving a modern monster sedan with twise or more the power must be insane. I was amazed, and still am amazed though, how Audi could make that shitty arm rest cobstruction were it lifted the arm rest up when you pulled the parking brake. So each time you went for a drive you had to lift the armrest straight up, and fold it down again, since it was on some crappy ratchet lock. Otherwise it would sit poking up in a weird angle.

2021-11-16 00:31:58 +0000 UTCJust as well I drove off to the site inspections this morning wearing my pearls, as I was then able to clutch them when the "What is a dry riser?" question came up followed by Richard saying he'd asked Google. I'd've like to have thought the train of brain activity would be "Who do we know of from the internet who is very dull and will know all about that?" with the obvious answer being me. Anyway, pearls now back in jewellery box. Just fyi. Thank you for the many chuckles. They took the edge off of the awfulness that is the Kia Cee'd (or something) automatic I've got today as a courtesy car in place of my Soul EV. Dunno how I would've coped without the pick me up to be honest.

2021-11-15 11:49:45 +0000 UTCMy dad said that the fog was particularly thick, so like all the best horror films, only glimpses were seen along with the noise of 4 RR Griffons. Quite possibly a good thing - if they had been spotted there would have been a lot of complaints, they were flying very low π€£

2021-11-15 07:50:23 +0000 UTCWow, what an amazing story. I can imagine that a Shackleton looming out of the fog would be quite an eerie sight. Richard

2021-11-15 07:50:09 +0000 UTCMy brother has an A7 black edition in white with massive wheels and a black leather smelling cave interior. I remember the day he bought it he pulled up outside my house and my first thought was why is there an sinister Audi parked across my drive? then my bro got out of it. I was very surprised

2021-11-15 06:45:05 +0000 UTCThe spare key for my new car came with an enormous brown tag on it, it's almost a shame to take it off. 62 plate MX-5 Kuro Edition if anyone's interested, replacing a Tesla Model 3.

2021-11-14 21:53:17 +0000 UTCYou have a Century? Wow! Pics always welcome to hello@smithandsniff.com
Smith and Sniff
2021-11-14 21:17:21 +0000 UTCThe Century is surprisingly economical especially on the highway, revving at a rather relaxing 1500rpm at 60mph. Not to mention it has cylinder deactivation so using only half a bank when not needed. I'd post a pic but I don't think I can on here

2021-11-14 21:11:44 +0000 UTCMy dad was involved in a spooky fens story. In late '69/early '70 it was reported by several people and the local lincolnshire newspaper that a 'ghost' bomber had been spotted flying low in the fog over the fens. The bomber was reported as a Lancaster, with 4 engines and twin tail. The truth was a little further from that. The aircraft in question was a modified Avro Shackleton flown by the Royal Aircraft Establishment, which my dad was a flight test observer. They were testing a weapons guidance system that worked in poor visibilty which they could fly the aircraft with, so they flew over the fens as it was obstacle free and very often foggy. As the Shackleton was a descendant of the Lanc, the noise and shape looming through the fog was easily mistaken.
