Podcast 66 - Cars and washing powder

This week Jonny and Richard manage to talk about cars for once, including the Ineos Grenadier, the Gemballa Marsien and the new Vauxhall Astra.

There's also chat about which paint colours don't cost extra, cars you'd only want to buy new, the world's most laid back traction control, unintelligent damper control, songwriters not being specific enough about the cars they reference, and the new game of trying to list a manufacturer's entire range without cheating.

Plus, an amazing fact about laundry detergent.

I must have moved away by then, back in the old TFM days the jingle was 'South Cleveland Garages, on the trunk road, your Nissan super dealer' glamorous!

Paul Sharp

Re Dealership Slogans- Up here on Teesside, the now defuct 'South Cleveland Garages' used the slogan 'Simply the Best', to which they used same titled Tina Turner song in their adverts. Unfortunately I can't find a copy of such an epic recording, however below is a youtube link to a nightclub in Middlesbrough with everyone singing along. https://youtu.be/KnfCD2-LBM4

Fishing is definitely a Spowahtaaaaaah. You try playing in a really big fish & not breaking a sweat.

My dear departed dad worked for Joseph Lucas (OK, consider the jokes as read). In the last part of his career with them, late 70s, early eighties, he worked in liaison with Datsun and Kienzle on early engine management systems. I remember he was much amused by his Japanese colleagues pronunciation of the company cars in which they drove about in Japan. They were Laurels. The closest the natives got to an English pronunciation was “Roareroo”. I can’t hear about a Laurel without correcting it in my head to Roareroo.

Chris Rayner

Came for the washing powder content, stayed for the car chat.

Haha I'm glad to hear that someone was using the Yaris to the best of its abilities. They could definitely do with stiffer suspension if you fancy "track work" - but they don't really weigh much so tend to be quite fun. I know Richard has mentioned cockroach cars before, and I still reckon it would be amusing to see a Smith n Sniff video in one.

Ben Payne

I did a track day (1hr taster) in my Porsche & was chopped by a old Yaris on it’s door handles around every corner. He was having more fun in his £1500 hatchback then any one else in their sports cars.

Hello!

Smith and Sniff

Thought I’d say hello this week ✌️

Fahren Mintah

Saw a ferrari overtaking a lot of cars on the way to Goodwood one year. Floppy haired twat driving, just managed to avoid oncoming traffic, his girlfriend looked pretty pissed off.

Peter Heamon

Got an UP! Once saw 100+mph out of it. Quite vibratey at that speed, couple of warning lights came on too. Occasionally used to commute in it from Lincoln to Oxford and back. Not quite as quick as my RS6.

Peter Heamon

Can I out point out the moon has just gone gibbous. Just saying'.

Peter Heamon

Hi Richard and Jonny, hope you guys are well! Great podcast. New Astra looks great but the front end does not suit the hatch back styling imo

I used to work for Currie Motors (late 80's), and yes, those of us in the company at non-management level referred to it as 'Nice Business to do People With'. It was a Fowaaarrdh's dealer in SW Laaaaaaaandaaaaaaahhhn, I worked at the Twickenham and Hampton Court branches. Pretty sure the branch manager at HC was a paedo. Lot of smoking in the dealership, nothing to do with the (probable) paedo. Not aware of any porno stash either. I remember trashing a shitty Escort by kerbing the nearside wheels one time; also span a XR2 in Woking, that was fun in a pant crapping sort of way. Loved driving Traaaaaansitsaagh's as no weight over the rear axle.

Peter Heamon

Alldays & Onions number plates is Smith and Smith merchandise I would absolutely buy

Peter Norrish

I noticed that gappy plate for the first time today - because the car in question appeared to have the old plate underneath (to fill out the gap?) but it was a different shade of yellow Little manual car? 1.3L mk1 Yaris! Pick one up for the change you've found down the back of the sofa
