Podcast 62 - Clown in a Bedford Rascal
Added 2021-06-20 18:00:03 +0000 UTCA listener has sent us an incredible tale of a kids' entertainer getting into a comical tiny van accident.
Also in this episode, a creepy flyer for a magician, why the Chicago Bulls of the nineties would have been great at magic, a hot hatch grandma, which cars Simon Cowell resembles, an update on David Coverdale's cars, the nightmare of light-coloured trousers, nostalgia for Robinson's Barley Water, speed limits for pick-ups, the pain of owning a late SAAB 9-5, accidental use of display lavatories, the scarcity of plastic bodied cars, vans for an Australian terrarium seller, how to pronounce Hiace and Proace, the dodgems of Coney Island, a correction on Vocoders, models that all have the same visible fault, a car that smells like a warehouse of safety shoes and another new song lyrics game.

I have recently found this series of podcast and slowly working my way backwards. After listening to this one and struggling to navigate a roundabout whilst listening to this story I decided it was time to see what this patreon malarkey is!

2021-06-23 10:24:05 +0000 UTCI have the answer for you on the most expensive plastic/fibreglass bodied car, and it's suitably weird and obscure. It's the Ulster chassis Devin SS, one of a handful of specials assembled in California with a Belfast-built frame, Corvette running gear, and a smattering of tuning parts. Devin was a noted fibreglass expert in a time when the stuff was basically the equivalent of carbonfibre in terms of cutting edge performance - see the original Meyers Manx for a general idea. The Devin SS had a considerably better power-to-weight ratio than the Shelby Cobra, and had a few in-period races where it put the boots to a Maserati Birdcage and so forth. Outside of this, Devin specials were dominant at Pikes Peak, and he did a bunch of four-cylinder Porsche-powered cars that were also pretty vicious. The Norn Iron chassis cars are very rare, and it all ended in the usual tale of woe and bankruptcy. However, there is a good bit about him flying over to test the naked chassis (originally Jaguar-powered, these were Ulster Tourist Trophy racers and engineers, lots of Astons and the like) on a nearby airfield that often had cattle wandering around. Came in absolutely dripping in cowpat, signed the deal. Re: Love/Saab/knob. Before starting his detailing agency, I believe Mr. Plant promised to give fans every inch of his Saab. Let's leave it on that side of things.

2021-06-23 04:38:00 +0000 UTCGreat pod as always though had a little bit of a twilight zone moment when, while listening to the letter about Saab 9-5’s, I turn the corner and was presented with a top spec 9-5.

2021-06-22 09:39:12 +0000 UTCA bit of raspberry on some light-hued shorts isn't a huge issue. A friend of mine decided to wear white jeans on his stag do. At 2am in a busy strip club in Swansea, he very violently and very publicly shat himself whilst in an almost comatose state induced by heavy drinking. People flew out of the club, hands over their mouths, as if someone had sounded a fire alarm. That's a light-coloured trouser nightmare. Fucking horrifying.

2021-06-21 09:38:21 +0000 UTCCan’t wait for the morning dog walk to listen in peace to another awesome episode. But on the subject of creepy magician I draw your attention to this guy. https://www.garryseagravesmagic.co.uk/ I just feel he should be on a list of some description on that side of things.

2021-06-20 19:30:58 +0000 UTCGreat podcast guys! The clown story was brilliant. My dad also owned a Bedford rascal van and used it for breakdown recoveries. He loved the smaller vans and still has his Toyota liteace which is rotting in our garden. He has owned it for 23 years

2021-06-20 19:18:14 +0000 UTCI had lots of comments on various segments of today's show, but given that I didn't write any of them down now I have little idea what they were. Take it as read they were the most humorous/informative/arcane* comments ever. *delete as appropriate. Great show chaps, keep it up.
