Podcast 54 - Car buying, live from eBay

Jonny is distracted by a bargain-priced Audi A2 auction about to end. Also in this episode, talking to previous owners of your car, Bluetooth phone dramas, classified ads that give too much information, saying Cossie correctly, what Americans make of the Austin Metro, the delights of a cockroach Corolla, why Jonny's brother is the king of the snotters, bad news for the Sultan of Brunei's clock guy, and a game of dead person's unwanted old car roulette.

Dead spec F150 with trailer from a little old lady who used it to haul her 1stgen civic race car around the NW US.

Dead people often leave great cars behind and their children don't care. I am in possession of 2 Tr6s and a 73 Midget all bought off dead people. My best dead guy find was last fall when I found a 65 Alfa Sprint gt sinking into the dirt at an estate auction. Jonnie was sent pictures when it came to my house... Great show. Keep it up

FYI, I had one of those mid-2000s Corollas - Lucerne Silver - and I believe the power steering is electric

Ed Storer

I've had three "for sale due to death" cars but none involved the dead person in the car, that feels like the opposite of automotive top trumps.

Do another recording while an eBay clock ticks down, that was great.

Battles

This one hit me right. I lol’d through all of it. And also I’m doomed to spend the rest of the day on Craigslist looking for death spec sales.

I laughed out loud at Jonny’s comment, “Strictly No Offers would be our version of Come Dancing”, but I think Richard was too deep in car shopping to properly register it. 😃

Steven Gurr

When it's safe and legal to do so, could you please arrange a ticketed patrons' live podcast recording and car meet? That would be fun.

Peter Norrish

Really enjoyed this dredge through £500 shitboxes. Perhaps this could be a semi-regular feature, pick a budget and a spec and see what you can find.

Graham Dallas

Only part way through but had the thought, if we had a whip around could we create a car fund to buy a car/cars. Also would that kick in the divorce clause, is it the money or "not another fucking car Jonny!"

Jono

I'm currently driving an Avensis and the steering is definitely quite mushy. When I first got it I was constantly checking that the front tyres hadn't deflated

Lloyd Morgan - Moore

Wonderful stuff as always, chaps. Dead person's car roulette reminded me of an experience a few years ago (well, the early 90s) when a mate went to look at a Porsche 944 that had been advertised at an unbeatable price "due to a death". Turned out the death - of natural causes - had occurred in the car, and hadn't been discovered for some time. The car was immaculate until you opened the door. Not even Jonny's shampoo work would have got rid of that smell.

”Shit Cars Owned By Dead People” is an excellent episode which plays perfectly to your core audience - what do you think we all do in our spare time? The £500-£1000 Autotrader low mileage search is something I do regularly. I was gutted last Summer when I narrowly missed out on a mint high spec Kia Magentis for under £1k. We ought to make it a competitive spowahtaaaaah.

Richard Fitton-Perkins

Yes, belated birthday wishes, Richard!

Richard Fitton-Perkins

Paul, the current owner of my Smart Roadster, got in touch again this morning to say he has fixed the issues. I'm convinced that he's Richard's mate from across the road. My first car, a Land Rover SIII, was bought by a friend and taken over the pond to Ohio.

Matt Tester

Great podcast guys. Also a late happy birthday to Richard. My first car and current car is a 52 plate Toyota Corolla t3 1.4 in silver (e12). I am 23 and have had the car since I was 20. Only cost me £500 and has no mechanical issues. Cannot fault it
