Podcast 42 show notes

Hello, hello.

To go with this week's podcast, some links and a few images. The lead picture is of a wooden-bodied Hustler 6 (but not the one Jonny's trying to trick Richard into buying). The other images show Postman Pat flaunting his needless hardware, Sir Topham Hatt deciding to have a big lunch in the middle of a crisis, and the man from Gogglebox with his talking train lookalike.

Hello chaps. Just wanted to say that your piss takes of Thomas the Tank Engine and Postman Pat had me in stitches! Possibly your funniest episode to date. Very glad to have the company of you two in these difficult times. All the best :-)

Alex Brunsdon

I think Jonny is right they should buy the Hustler between them and then wander down to Swindon and get an EV conversion. Can you think of a better classic to convert? The six wheels will allow for loads of batteries too.

Carl Pickering

Sorry I'm a bit late (I tend to be listening a week in arrears) but just to let you know that Sodor is a real place in the British Isles - sort of. There is a C of E diocese called Sodor and Mann that used to cover, I believe, the Isle of Man plus some of the western isles of Scotland but is now just the Isle of Man. And it has long been believed (mostly by people on the Island) that the Thomas the Tank Engine stories were set in the Isle of Man. Not just because of the whole Sodor thing but the Island (still) has a narrow guage steam railway network and generally looks like something out of the 1930s. Cheers, James - Living Covid free on the Isle of Man

I am also a female listener, I love the podcast and listen regularly. The car part is great but the “other stuff” is brilliant, I was in tears of laughter over the recent Thomas and postman pat talk! Thanks, Nicola.

Ross & Nicola Would

There was. Me!

Peter Heamon

Your dad obviously had a thing about straight edges, said Volvo was a bit like a sturdy Hustler.

Peter Heamon

Not a problem. I'm patient, certainly more patient than Tom was with regards to speeding. :)

George Wade

Sorry, must get faster at replying to these threads.

Smith and Sniff

Yep I saw it yesterday. Brilliant programme. What a chap Tom was. Absolute gent. The type of gent I'm going to strive to be.

George Wade

It's available on ITV Player: https://www.itv.com/hub/the-life-times-of-captain-sir-tom/10a0447

Smith and Sniff

So, yes, you do have female listeners! You are my treat on a Tuesday morning when I’m on the road doing merchandising calls for my business. You never fail to make me laugh when you go seriously off-piste!

Gill Pile

Gents you mention a documentary about Captain Sir Tom Moore, where did you see it?

George Wade

Love the old Land Cruisers. Mother had a ‘99 Colorado V reg petrol V6. Did 260,000 miles in 14 years, never once had a single issue, utterly bombproof and immaculate. It was part exchanged in 2013 for a L322 TDV8 and has done 80k miles of problem free driving, (although I have most probably jinxed it now).

Charlie Gilmour

You two are as Mad as a Box of Frogs...thanks for keeping me Sane-ish. For Richards dog car I'm surprised there has been no suggestion of the Talbot Matra Rancho

Mark Williams

Copied from Fesshole.... "If I'm enjoying a podcast I like to rate it 1 star on the app as I don't want them to get cocky."

Richard Tapp

Post Script -Frank Davies was an amateur rally driver. And sadly the Clio 197 that I mentioned in my first post was written off at 3am last night as an off duty ambulance driver took out a row of cars on our road in icy conditions. Gutted.

David Barnes

Again, thank you for keeping my sanity intact! It's always fun to listen. And yes, you do have female subscribers - well, at least two that you now know of 😉.

Lisa Monsterken

We had the 4 wheeler Hustler as the 'family car' for few years in the late 80s / early 90s - my dad was a bit left field with his motoring choices. It had this nasty habit of randomly shatteringly windscreens all over the laps of the driver and passenger. The most memorable time left my mum and younger brother stranded near the entrance to a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Sheffield. Known to have a bit of containment issue on occasion, it provoked a little more stress in my mother than it normally would have done. The Hustler got parked up for good shortly afterwards and my dad bought a Volvo 740 GLE (Saloon) that he couldn't really afford and my mum wouldn't drive it because it was too big. Top show, genuinely makes my very happy listening to you guys. All the best

Simon House

I’ll get onto our lawyers! I seem to recall CarPervert having a bit of a similar issue with the Burberry lawyers when he made the Chavalier with their patented Burberry check 😂

With regards to Thomas The Tank Engine, there is a brilliant John Finnemore sketch that may answer some of your questions... https://johnfinnemoressouvenirprogramme.tumblr.com/post/104397837658/breebird33-one-of-my-favorite-sketches-from

Tom Clynes

There is a VW Scirocco round my way with LV wing mirror covers. Entirely official product, I’m sure!

David Barnes

Hi Richard, it’s tough to find details of the running/driving time breakdown (maybe because it would highlight how fast they were going). I found out that technically Frank Davies wasn’t a rally driver, but a fellow mountaineer who he drove the 462 miles in 1971 like a bastard. The closest anyone has got to their record in modern times is Bob Wiseman, some 2 hours and 40 minutes longer than them. I managed to complete the challenge in 23 hours and 50 minutes with a van full of sweaty blokes from Stoke in a Transit! Keep up the great content, Dave Barnes.

David Barnes

I told my wife that you were asking to hear from women that listen to the Podcasts either by will or forced to listen by their other half and she was straight on it asking for your email address. Fingers crossed its to praise you for the amazing content. Thank you for the hours of entertainment you have given me so far

Russ Hill

So, Richard's conundrum re a dog hack.... You already have a keeper Landy and the 911..... Will the said hound not fit in the Landy? If not , change the dog, not the car. I know that sounds a bit like Viz Top Tips, but the other alternative is to have the middle front seat option. Dogs love it. Had a clutch of mad boxers and Landys... It was the only time the dogs were ever quiet. On another note. Collecting cars have a Heritage 90 2015 with 2000 odd miles... Latest bid is £46250. Has the world gone MAD!

Nick Davies

Miniatur wunderland is just utterlly incredible. Their control room for the positions of trains, boats and planes etc is genuinely more complicated than the real thing! (I've worked on the UK train timetable systems software in the past) The attention to detail is insane.

Jack Jones

I actually work for Louis Vuitton and will be on a zoom call with a VP of marketing this week. I’ll be sure to bring up your proposal of sponsorship. You never know, we may get your Hustler 6 wrapped in the logo ;). I will conveniently ignore the lack of love for LV . I’ll file that alongside the FSO hate which my father owned....

P S

My first ever car was a RWD Mazda 323 estate. It was so light it did not have (or need) power steering.

Henry Lisk

I don't know if they are available in the UK but how about a Mazda 6s estate 5 speed?

david marden

I've not listened yet so I was disappointed to find that the Miniatur Wunderland doesn't appear to be a museum wholly associated with that most mythical of Greek beasts :) (and yes I realise it's not spelt the same)

Mark Elliott

Holy heck, how fast did they drive? Richard

Smith and Sniff

Oh sorry, he was missed out of the original post but he should be in there now, the lunch-scoffing buffoon. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Remember that ep. in T the TE where one of the trains misbehaves and the fat controller bricks him up in a tunnel. Absolutely psychopathic.

Calum Gillies

Postman Pat is set in the real area of Greendale at the foot of Scafell Pike in the Lake District. The unfeasible hump back bridge into 90 degree bend Pat drives over in the intro actually exists and is good fun in my little Clio 197. This got me thinking about the fastest these country roads have been driven and surely it must have been rally driver Frank Davies when he escorted fell runner Joss Naylor from Ben Nevis to Snowdon to do the 3 Peaks Challenge in an unbeatable 11 hours 56 minutes. He did this on open public roads in a Ford Capri Vita 6. What an amazing and unlikely sporting pairing, the type of feat that surely deserves a film or TV program to celebrate the event, being as this year is the 50th anniversary of it. Rd

David Barnes

Where’s Sir Topham Hat? Can’t see him?

Peter Gamble

And Miniatur Wunderland, it's a must-visit for you two when we're allowed to travel again. https://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/
