Podcast 41 - show notes

Hello, hello. Some extra notes to go with this week's show. The lead image is of the crisp dials in the Peugeot e-Partner. The other four are the photo Richard stopped the car to take of a Rover 75 V8 Tourer, the Fisher Price Yaphet Kotto-alike in Jonny's desk cactus, the Ford Ranger thinking Smith and Sniff is 'jazz' (thanks to listener Ken Long) and a yachting 38a Range Rover spotted by listener Tom Hollick.

Perhaps Tesla should go one step further with the model S and dispense with the steering wheel altogether, and go down the joystick route as seen on an experimental Saab featured on top gear? What do you reckon?

Alex Brunsdon

Phase 1 BX was the same, non cancelling indicators on a rocker switch, a slide control for the wipers... Everything else was attached around the dial binnacle. Great idea but pretty fragile and not as ergonomic as they had hoped. By the time my Phase 2 came out I think Peugeot had told them to tone it down a bit and stalks (from a Talbot Samba, one of which I also own) were fitted in stead.. I really do need to get out more!

Ben Aston

Another point on the cocking idiocy of the Tesla pictures is that the infotainment screen reads like a video-game library, what with Witcher 3 shown at the top. Maybe they should just have put a console controller in place of the steering abomination?

Ohhh, if only it was ULEZ exempt (and I needed a Maestro which, on reflection, I probably don't). Richard

Smith and Sniff

I suppose the difference is there were still physical controls that you could find by feel. Richard

Mr Porter what about a 2001 Maestro with 33k on the clock? Unfortunately not ulez exempt 😉 https://mathewsons.co.uk/auctions/auction-dates/vehicles/16424-2001-tet-rover-maestro

You should definitely get a P38! I bought one last year for £800 to drive to Islay with my mates. 200k miles, still got it and has never broken down. It's my sister's daily driver now. Best bit, when I bought it I checked it on the ulez website and it said it was compliant. I couldn't believe it so sent a screenshot to my mates. Obviously got a ticket the next time I went into town so contested it with the screenshot as evidence. They let me off and added the car to the list of compliant vehicles. I've checked a few other P38's and it's pot luck as to whether they come up as compliant or not so you could grab one that is. Get one with high miles so you know it's been on the road a lot and it'll be bullet proof (full disclosure I have a Range Rover problem).

Thomas Gilpin

MG ZT-T V8 SE on Cars and Classics, also spotted a Toyota Crown estate...see Mr. Metcalfe has also just tested the GRRRRRR Yaris along with the Litchfield tweaked (obv. the GRRRRRRRRRRR Yaris)

Bruce Driffill

Citroen were doing stalkless dashboards for years. I had one on my Visa GT.

Phillip Lane

Just had to go looking on Auto trader and Ebay at Rover 75 V8s. Then found this beast https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-75-V8-4-6-ZT260-Mustang/203262024768?hash=item2f535c5c40:g:5DoAAOSwdXdgEpqJ The description looks like Richard could have written it: All the benefits of the Rover 75, and then someone went and put an enormous V8 4.6 Ford Mustang in the front.

Firstdan2000

That gold Rover 75 V8 tourer is awesome. Reg says its got 80 something thousand miles on it. What an absolute sleeper.

George Wade

That Rover 75 looks great. I don't think it's aged as a design much over the years.

Stephen Cooper

If someone blurred the wheels and background on that P38, and a load of other air-suspension equipped 4x4s, you could play a game of "is it under hard acceleration or has the rear suspension given way". Could be part of a new Smith & Sniff weekly quiz called "Chod Masters" hosted by Ken Bruce of course.

Elliott Jones

On the subject of Binnacles, i do wonder how much longer people are going to be interested in digital gauges. New models from Rolls Royce have digital gauges which feels a bit like Rolex trying to sell a digital watch. I know people are impressed by the "tech" aspect but those screens are going to look terribly dated in a few years whereas good quality instruments are timeless. Anyway i am sure i have a point but i've had four beers so i cant really remember what it was anymore.

Mat Guest

You are not wrong that is an awesome binacle.

Robin White

Very cool Yaphet Kotto. Surprised Fisher went to the trouble of making him anatomically accurate.
