While attending the only class at Earth School (once I realized I’d signed up for it) I learned that I’m a bit of a mess.
I learned that every soul on this planet is enrolled with me,
And that each of them is all a bit of a mess too.
I learned that I’m in class to understand exactly what my particular mess is,
And to begin working to clean up it up — even if it’s just around the edges.
I learned that Gandhi was a bit of a mess.
I learned that Martin Luther King was a bit of a mess.
I learned that Michelangelo was a bit of a mess.
I also learned that the only real homework is to try to remember that we are all stuck in the messiness together.
And that the best way through is to love ourselves AND the “others” in spite of the messiness.
In spite of them rooting for the wrong team,
And voting for the wrong side.
In spite of the pain they cause through their inability to see that my mess is so much more important than theirs.
And in spite of them failing to become the very best version of myself …
… I meant, of course, themselves.
And for extra credit, I can try to reframe even a few of my many, many arguments (about how I’m right and they’re wrong) into simply sharing my understandings and then, listen patiently to theirs.
The assignment is to do that a little more, and to maybe realize that they, the “others”, are actually trying to get to the same place I am and just as imperfectly.
Peace on Earth, my friends!
With love,
Steve
