Composition and Gesture

Just like a Realistic figure drawing has a Structure (the matter) and a Gesture (the energy)...
So do most classically based Composition.
The most famous examples of all the figures in a "structured" arrangement would be most of the Remaissance Madonna and Child paintings.
In those, the two of three figures are grouped in a Trianglular design.

This beautiful Solomon J Solomon I've chosen is a great example of a composition built around a gestural (energetic) design.
In this case the Spiral.
Art's great power is to organize life in a way that can connect to viewer to not just what is seen but what is felt!
Artists that have good control of their craft, notice these things.
Take a look at your favorite paintings in history.
