Introducing the Humanmade Mark

Hi folks, a kinda weird video this month, but I haven't been able to get this idea out of my head, and I'd like to know what you think before I put it out into the world!

Some questions and notes for you folks:

Thank you so much for your support, and please tell me what you think! <3

Seth, as his mother says, is a Real Boy :-)

Oh dear! Thank you for letting me know - I hope they won't mind, hopefully it's different enough in industry and branding to be not confusing. Are you saying that I should get in touch with humanmade.com, and they are nice people? If so, do you have a recommended email for me to contact? Thank you!

Hi Tris, the idea is good, but I'd reconsider the name. I work for a company called Human Made (humanmade.com) and they actively protect their trademarks. There is also the Japanese fashion brand who have had to come to some kind of agreement with Human Made. I suggest you get in touch with them, they are an open, friendly bunch.

Andrew, I hope you like the changes I made, I took most of your advice, and I've thanked you in the credits section of the site - I hope that's all right! https://humanmademark.com/

Love the idea, in previous work I included a section ( In readme, or as an annex in papers) about how AI was used. I think it helps identify which parts are human made and promote human-centric worflows

Great take Tris!

Excellent, and yeah presenting very much the same views I have

So Seth cannot use it ?

This is an awesome idea that I haven’t seen addressed before - finding a cool piece of art, and seeing another user breakdown how it’s AI generated leaves a sour taste in the mouth. In terms of design - the logo is great! I do think the text could use some tweaks. If you’ll allow me to geek out on font accessibility, I hope you can find the below useful. Of course, these are just my suggestions, with some ux/ui/marketing insight to back my thoughts up! 1. The font (both the sans-serif version in the video, and the serif in the .SVG) are quite light for reading at smaller sizes - the URL for example is very difficult to make out on a mobile screen. 2. The letters are also quite close together, it’s cognitively challenging to read the URL when “mademark” can be read as “demark”, etc. Suggestions: 1. I think a heavier version of the weight you are using would help viewers - either normal, medium or bold. 2. A slight increase in letter spacing would go a long way. 3. Also some boundaries around what the minimum size the logo should be used at would be a good idea. The downloads page for creative commons.org has suitable sizes. Also - the Creative Commons sticker integrating the URL is a personal favourite! 4. I find exercises like squinting my eyes, stepping back from my monitor etc. really help in situations where legibility are important, like finalising a logo. If you can’t make out the text/icon from slightly squinting, those with visual impairments will also struggle. P.S. - If you’re thinking of using another font, open-foundry.com has been a great resource in my job for open source fonts, away from google-fonts - plus their font playground is a treat, letting you play around and see how each font looks with different sizes and weights! Wishing you all the best Tris! Edit: mixed up serif and sans-serif mentioned above - still make mistake after 4 years!

Thank you! And yeah, I considered something like that, and there are a few doomed projects that try to make these guarantees, but I'm actually *NOT* looking for that kind of forensic guarantee. (even if it were possible, which I don't think it is, not in the general case) I don't mind if you used an AI rhyming dictionary to help with your poem, or copilot for some of your code, or to make a moodboard of 100 sketch ideas before picking up a paintbrush. This grunt work isn't creativity, and I don't mind you automating it with whatever! :-D

I gotta say I love the idea! I've gone with the thought in the back of my mind ever since I heard that some open-source projects have stopped accepting AI generated code. I think it'd be nice to be able to mark something as 100% "authentic" in software. But I gotta ask, since it is software, is there any way to cryptographically sign it? Wouldn't that be awesome? Best regards, Bastian. :)
