872. Escape from the Multicurse: Solaris (1972)

Our three co-hosts are stuck in the multiverse and need to get back to their home universe. Clearly, the only way to do that is to explore our cultural obsession with multiverses, alternate timelines and parallel worlds, and tie it all into a conversation about post-modern art, pop culture, and the lessons these stories teach us. Also, each episode, one of them is an asshole who will probably sabotage the whole thing.

This week we discuss 1972’s Solaris, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky!

872. Escape from the Multicurse: Solaris (1972)

Comments

In the beginning I think part of the deal is that he knows that his father will likely die before he returns, I think they say something to that effect, so the only way for him to return to his father is to go live on the island. So it’s him once again catching up on loving someone only after they are gone :(

I just watched Everything, Everywhere, all at once, for the first time, and the whole time all I could think was really the stuffy old academy thought this was the best film of the year? I liked it just fine but Best Picture?

The book Solaris is awesome and adds a whole layer to everything discussed in this episode. It's less an exploration of grief (though it is that) and more an interrogation of what it would be like to try to communicate with a truly alien intelligence. It's also a kick ass psychological ghost story.
