662. Tales from the Pit: BUY MY BOOK, or the Art of Self-Promotion (Feat. Jason Pargin)

In a never-ending quest to both sell books and ruin his own passions and pastimes, Michael Swaim has invited fellow author Jason Pargin (John Dies at the End, Zoey Ashe series) to break down all the hardest aspects of maintaining a career as a novelist, and learns lessons that apply to all of us, especially the ones with jobs or who want things.

This was the perfect thing to listen to for me. Not unlike Michael, I recently finished heavy edits on my first novel and sent it off (via my literary agent fella). I am now eagerly awaiting a flood of rejection letters akin to Harry’s acceptance letter to Hogwarts—but with less humor. However, it only takes one person to like it to get the ball rolling, right? (Right?!) Whether any of the houses accept it or not, seeing what I’ll have to do for a social media push was extraordinarily helpful…. Now to pick up Michael’s book at the bean store and find Jason on Audible.

I love this so much Michael. Really great writing.

Earl grey cold for life! It's best with sparkling water 😇

Great ep! If you hadn't said anything at the beginning I wouldn't have noticed anything, and I didn't care anyway! But now I expect closing it out with "Oh I'm so upset!" going forward.

I bought the book, thank you for promoting it here, I'm really bad at following socials for creators. Also as an artist that had let the distate for promotion ruin the passion I had in my creative process, I really loved the portion of the discussion involving finding the positive aspects of traditionally negative traits in that aspect of work, thank you guys. Now the most important bit, the thing that had me click over to Patreon to comment: I fucking love iced Earl Grey, it's my go to drink in the morning.

I joined here because I love the Cracked/Those aren't muskets stuff and I find Michael's voice to be soothing. I have not regretted patronizing Small Beans for a second. One of the best perks of Small Beans patronage I've come to enjoy is book recommendations. I grew up reading Horror and the Classics but not sci fi as much. Recently I started looking for Harlon Ellison (Not very successful), Jason Pargin (Just bought "If this book exists you're in the wrong Universe" in Santa Cruz) and ofcourse jumping on grabbing a copy of The Climb. Michael, I haven't finished it yet but what I've consumed so far has a genuine damned delight. Thank you.

I'm so glad you did this episode because I didn't know you wrote a book! And I'm a patreon patron of small beans and a lover of all things swaim. That really hammers home the message of this podcast ep, that marketing / sales is as important to growing awareness of art as the actual quality of the work. Anywho, bought the book and looking forward to diving in! 🚀🙌🏻

Tiger Beat guy? lol. That was the teen magazine when I was a kid.

Hey man I recently spent a few months in a similar position. We all love you and wouldn't know what to do if you disappeared from our lives. I spend more time with your voice than most people in my life.
