THE A'S TO YOUR Q'S!

Thank you guys for all your questions! We got a LOT of interesting ones... We really appreciate so much curiosity and enthusiasm about every corner of Generation Loss. Here's what we could answer;

In regards to TSE, is it possible in any way, shape or form that Hetch WAS trying to help the Hero? Additionally, is it possible that (specifically in the final scene) that Hetch was being controlled like everyone else?

Ranboo: Hetch was definitely not being controlled like everyone else, but there are many different kinds of control.

Do the numbers and letters on the side of the vhs tapes have any significance?

Kertoir: They didn't originally, I believe Jake had told me they were just for the sake of keeping track of the VHS tapes during production, and then we were going to do something with it once since we saw how you guys were keeping track of them and working together to make that big log (which was a super cool community effort, btw). We had come up with this whole like extra path in The Founder's Game that utilized them with the codes doing different things, and then plans fell through, haha.

For Kertoir, what has been your favorite piece to help out with/draw/sketch so far? love all your designs!

Kertoir: Thank you so much!! Oh, this is such an impossible question... I don't think I can pick just one, so I'll highlight my favourite from each project;

Out of the characters currently known in the story, who was the hardest to create the design for? I know we've seen a bit of the process but I wasn't sure if one cause quite a bit more back and forth as you get the idea for them down.

Kertoir: Most of the characters came very easily to us, with the first iterations often looking very similar to the versions you see in the final products. If I had to choose, I think the monster from The Founders Game took the absolute most iterations and playing with to get just right, which if you're a paid member of our Patreon, you can see here!

Ranboo: The way I give character designs to people is i close my eyes and think of the character and give an insanely vague description. The designers love it!

My question is. Has there been fan theories about generation loss, that have been really close to what you actually planned?

Kertoir: Oh yeah.

Ranboo: There are some who have gotten some parts right and others who have gotten those same parts wrong but other parts right, but thats the beauty of having a story that has a fanbase. Everyone is collaborating to try and figure out what happens next so in a way a new story gets made every time something new is released! Which i find really fun. One time though someone got something right but then it made me realize that the way that I wrote it was not good so i changed it.

For Kertoir, what did you have the most fun designing/drawing? What do you look forward to the most regarding your on-going work on this project? What's the process like to decipher Ranboo's ideas/descriptions and to create an image from it?

Kertoir: As of right now, I'm really looking forward to tackling the visuals for Oasis, I really want to get very creative with how we tell the story and techniques we use to convey information to the audience. It looks like we'll be moulding our own style in this medium, which is a really exciting prospect. In terms of deciphering Ranboo's ideas, it used to be a much more difficult task and lots of asking the right questions to get a better idea of what they had in mind. But, as we've gotten more collaborative with creating these stories, a lot of the visuals are my own ideas, and/or where we already tend to be on pretty similar pages!

When the hero’s autograph was included in the vhs release, was this an entirely new generation of the hero made specifically to sign things ? if so was their perception of reality warped and this was just another “challenge” to them, or did the hero know that they were signing cards to be given to the fans buying a recording of their death?

Ranboo: The way that I always imagined it is that his arm and hand were used as part of an automaton that signed each one by hand, for authenticity of course.

For Kertoir what’s your favourite character you’ve designed and what was one of the hardest Ranboo sketches to interpret?

Kertoir: My favourite character to design that you guys have seen has to be Red from Founder's Game. In terms of interpreting Ran's sketches, I'm not sure if they remember this, but I remember genuinely losing my mind trying to figure out what they were envisioning for the Story of Lostfield title card teaser that we revealed back at VidCon in 2023. I think at one point I had hit 11 iterations of that design before I finally got it right, haha...

Ranboo: I remember. Turned out great so that must mean my process works flawlessly.

As storytellers/artists, we all know there are a few moments or characters that make us go, "Holy hell! I made that? No way!" So, what currently is your favorite thing/character/visual about what you are creating?

Kertoir: For me The Founder's Game is something that I still look back with a lot of pride, a ton of the scenes in that I'm quite proud to say that I wrote or had a hand in planning how they played out (like the hallway scene I mentioned earlier lol). Though a smaller detail I want to highlight that I was recently looking back at was the weekly decision announcements and "out now" posts I had created for the GenLoss socials. I know those designs are kinda smaller, more insignificant pieces of the puzzle in the grand scheme of things, but I was surprised how much I loved them on revisit so long afterwards.

Ranboo: For things we have already made I have to agree that the founder's game is one that I am VERY proud of story wise. The direction it went in was exactly what I had in mind and thats always a great feeling with a project. The thing I am MOST proud of though you have not seen yet. But you will someday!

For both ranboo and kertoir, what is the most niche thing you have been inspired by? Like a single frame from a movie, a random youtube video you watched as a kid, some weird music, something like that.

Ranboo: The Walten Files was what made me really fall in love with "Analog horror" as a genre and medium, BUT the entirety of generation loss was really shaped from a demo version of A-Ha's Take On Me in which I had the thought: what if that version exists as the real song in another world? Music has always been a HUGE part of my writing process. I like to imagine scenes to certain songs, and they end up flowing a lot better that way!

Kertoir: Oh, there's been so many super niche and random ones, I wish I recall all of them. Out of context obviously, but I think once we had a Mr. Beast video up on the mood board for something LOL. Generally speaking, though, I think playlists and music are a pretty integral pillar to how we get inspired by and really just get in the headspace for working on Generation Loss. Like, I remember at one point when I was working on The Founder's Cut and I would listen to You Spin Me Around by Dead or Alive, and Talking in Your Sleep by the Romantics just on loop over and over. Same thing with Tranz by Gorillaz, Terrified by Childish Gambino, and Dream Sweet in Sea Major from Hawaii: Part II for The Founder's Game. I have no idea why these songs specifically got me inspired, before anyone digs into lyrics or anything, probably just vibes. Ran and I's GenLoss playlists are serious.

Is there a medium of art/storytelling that you wish you could use for Genloss, but do not think is possible at this time?

Ranboo: I think every medium honestly. Here's a list of mediums I have an idea for but not yet the resources to do.

Comic Book
Short film
Movie
Tv show
Blog
Morse Code transcripts
Video game
Board game
TTRPG game
Stage play
Live stream
Podcast
Album
Book

The problem is mainly figuring out how to have all of these accessible to the same audience. Not everyone who watches a tv show is willing to read a book these days. Or translate morse code for that matter.

Kertoir:
I yearn for a stageplay... I miss running tech so much... Besides that, I'd be so eager to take on any format if the story calls for it. I love a challenge when it comes to my work!

Egg what’s the funniest concept idea/sketch ranboo has given you to go off of for like posters and stuff?

Kertoir: I dug through our dms and seeing this one again made me laugh out loud

What has been your favorite part of the process for making GL? Planning, writing, brainstorming etc.

Kertoir: The actual production of what you guys see will always be my favourite part. The satisfaction of finally getting to make the things that we have been talking about and brainstorming about for months and months. I'm practically dying to make stuff by the time production rolls around, so it's so fun.

Ranboo: I would say my favorite part is when I am able to get into a good groove with writing! When things start lining up and I feel excited about what I am creating it's an incredible feeling really! That and when something actually gets released and I am able to see everyone's reaction to the things i've been excited to show! I am as much of a fan of what I put out as anyone, so in a way it's like im enjoying it alongside the audience all over again!

Comments

oh man, I would love to write a book with a secret between the lines, like that's already a baseline to writing novels for me anyway, but to have it be connected to an ARG? I'm gonna have to start relearning puzzle design so I can add this to my horror novel, haha
