Daily Comics, shh.

My 2023 resolution was to make a dumb little journal comic every day and I've been doing it and not sharing with anybody and I. LOVE. THIS. RESOLUTION.

I was inspired to do these because of Gale Galligan's daily comics. They're quick, scrappy, efficient, fun! Mine tend to be time-consuming, scrappy, and laborious.

But I'm trying to make them more clear and efficient! It's easier when I pencil first.

This one got long but I wanted to explain why there won't be an Elephant Town update tomorrow...

Miranda was a regular talker in the first set of notes! I'm glad she's decided for herself that, no, she prefers not to endure the burden of Talking to Humans.

The stuff on the floor is pretty minimal, actually:

(New Cat for scale.)

But the stuff on my computer is a messy nightmare. Deleted notes. Notes on my phone. Notes that are doubled or tripled among multiple files. Emails I sent myself.

I guess it makes sense to be tackling this now, halfway through (283 pages!!!), but of course I felt bad about not having new pages for tomorrow. The book will be a lot better for it, though.

You can tell when I'm stressing over work, because I either clean my house, or change my hair. In this case, I did both! Why not.

Anyway, I'll be posting these dumb daily comics for all patrons from now on, in batches like this one. (If you haven't been seeing a lot of posts here, you're probably "following" this Patreon account, which means you're not technically "a patron," but you'll see these occasional free posts!).

I'll put a select few of them on social media, too, but you'll get all of them here. Which seems like a luxury these days, with social media spinning down a weird, gross but entertaining toilet bowl.

I'll share some behind-the-scenes process stuff with my $5 patrons later this week - old notes I made for ET that I scrapped, old sketches, whatever I think you process nerds might like.

And I'll tag these daily comic posts "32shhh," since they kinda vibe with the not-public Stuck at 32 strips I've posted here. :)

Daily Comics, shh. Daily Comics, shh. Daily Comics, shh. Daily Comics, shh. Daily Comics, shh. Daily Comics, shh. Daily Comics, shh.

As always, getting a glimpse into the World of Danielle is an utter joy. There's such a gentle humor and kindness. I'm so glad that only a few trusted souls ever get to see my office. It's such a disaster zone. Please take all the time you need to guide Elephant Town to where you want it to go. <3

Yay! Hourly Comic Day is SOON and this makes me eager for it.

I'm feeling a little sick now just remembering it. 8-P

One of Mom's cats brought a live mouse into the house once and let it go. We found it in the bathroom a few hours later with all four cats around it wondering what to do with it. I ended up having to kill it -- with a flyswatter! It took a lot of hits before it finally stopped twitching; I felt sick for the rest of the day. 8-(

OMG a hacksaw!! Aww Andy, you mensch!

Oh right! It makes more sense if you see the whole book laid out in two pages; the one I'm drawing on is on the right. This was a throwaway planner one of my neighbors had filled halfway - I didn't want to buy anything until I got the hang of what I wanted in a daily comic book - but now I'm scheming how to design my own. >:)

If your cats ever put out a Skillshare on catching mice, lmk so I can make my cats watch it.

I had a mouse problem for a few weeks. Lacking any house predators, I set out a couple of live traps and would release the interlopers in a nearby wildlife refuge. One of them somehow got his little pink nosie jammed inside one of the trap’s air holes. Inside the trap: mouse. Outside the trap: a perfectly round pink bulb. Attempts to push its nose back inside resulted only in squeaks of protest. So. There I was, in the wildlife refuge, sitting on the ground, carefully cutting the trap away from its nose with a little hacksaw. The mouse scrambled away. Then as now, I’m not certain it appreciates that very very few humans would have gone to such lengths on its behalf.

When I retire from my day job I'll have to put "Professional artwad" on my business card. We had mice in my first house and I would trap them and release them in the wild on my way to work. That worked fine as long as I remembered to check the traps regularly :(

It took me some time to understand that "Space of infinite possibility" wasn't the title of the first cat's story. I was trying to find why you choose such title, then I saw the other had the same "title" as well....

I love these comics! You make even the mundane things look great.

Ilse

I LOVE these! Thank you for sharing them!

haahha I remember when I had to "help" the cat catch a mouse (she had it cornered behind a small cabinet unit and was running back and forth to both ends)... luckily I caught it unharmed and was able to let it go outside there was also a chipmunk I had found she had scared up the side of the house(???), so it was hanging on for dear life but alive other than what looked like a chunk of fur just missing out of one side (she may or may not have done that, it was like it just went bald in the one spot)

I'm glad the mouse is gone but man, our cats are stone cold killers and also eat the remains for us. Gross but useful, esp as one household member is terrified of rodents!

I love journal comics so much!! These made me smile and laugh. I’ve missed American Elf ever since Kochalka stopped and now I have a new beautiful journal comic to read 🥰 (outside of hourly comics day or whatever, I love those too but folks rarely continue outside of events like that… which is understandable since they take a long time). So DOUBLE thank you. 💖💖💖
