Elephant Town Chapter 11 (pages 5-7)

Oohh interesting!! Yeah, it's one of those words that I think Americans trip over when we see it spelled (well, I did anyway). And I have to fess up, while I started hand-drawing the chain-link fence, I finally realized that separating the hand-drawn version from the inks was going to take a whole day, which wasn't worth the trouble. So I altered a photo of a fence with a hole in it, and warped it and bent it to fit each panel. The originals will have hand-drawn fences on them, which I think will make them a little more special to own. :)

I love their banter, and solidly salute you for your efforts on the fencing. I can't believe the detail you've added to a chain-link fence, and think it was well worth a day's wait! Edited to add that, as an Australian, I had no idea the first syllable in opossum was not pronounced. In my head, I've always read it 'oh-possum'. Lesson learned/learnt!

A possum is a different animal (they're not even related, it turns out!), so I want to keep the spelling accurate for all the pedants out there (including myself). I'm thinking maybe spell it like 'possum <-- to show that there IS supposed to be an o in the spelling, but it's being pronounced without. Personally, if I read "an opossum" in a comic book, I'd assume the person is pronouncing it "an uh-possum" (because you don't need the "an" otherwise), which... nobody says that out here. We just say 'possum. Thoughts?

Per Merriam-Webster: In common use, possum is the usual term; in technical or scientific contexts opossum is preferred. Opossum can be pronounced with its first syllable either voiced play or silent play. So, I'd either make it "an opossum" or the more usual (and less confusing) "a possum."

OH!! Do people actually pronounce the "o" part? I know there's a difference between the North American opossum and the Australian possum, but I've never heard anyone in the States actually pronounce the first vowel. I'll ask around! In my mind, writing "an opossum" suggests that she's pronouncing it "an uh-possum," so I wanted to keep it phonetically right. (I think no matter which way I write it, it's gonna trip people up!)

AFAIK opossums are what you get in North America, and possums are what you get in Australia. Possums don't have the fearsome gape of opossums, but will still wreck your sh*t if you mess with them.
