Elephant Town Chapter 11 (pages 3+4)

I stressed so much about drawing that third panel, but it wasn't that bad! Given, I probably pared down the actual contents of the Lost Dog by about 99%.

The opossum was fun. >:)

Thanks to everyone in the $3+ tier who voted TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO for our cafe visitor (geez how long have I been working on this book with y'all?!):

I decided to make it a little cameo of A 100% Shepherdstown Person, my old photo professor Benita Keller. She's the only one I knew personally who was fatally affected by covid; she died last fall. It's impossible to think about events going on in town without her vivacious spirit, dressed in the loudest costume clothing she can find.

I think she'd have approved of being credited Opossum Lady in this book.

***

Unrelated to all this, I decided to close my Etsy shop (currently it's just "on vacation mode"). If you haven't heard the controversy, this synopsis written by a long-time seller on Etsy covers it the best.

For me, personally... I don't really benefit from their best feature, which is discoverability - people who buy my work most likely know me better than they know Etsy. So I'll look for another way to sell the remaining FIVE PALLETS OF BOOKS in my garage. (I started with nine, it's a dent!!) It's not a huge source of my income, so I'll sleep on it for a bit... when I find a better option, I'll let you know here. :)

(Of course, if you need one NOW, let me know, we'll work something out!)

something very like this happened to me in a Walmart in Tennessee once. I was a little more excited to see the possum!

I just learned of the "Wix" platform and will be trying that instead of Etsy.

I just saw this post from you, thanks so much for the link! I've always thought of Ko-Fi as just a donation program, I didn't know they had stores? Rad.

Nice to know I'm not alone is not being interested in human babies.

I know we're supposed to love possums because they eat so many ticks and how good they are at non-Euclidean geometry (or whatever the hell else they're good for) but they're completely terrifying to look at!

You might take a look at ko-fi. https://ko-fi.com/post/Ko-fi-or-Etsy-Where-Should-You-Sell-Your-Products-B0B5C3ZN9 (caveat: don't use it myself but noted someone else who was using it).

This would make my day and all productivity would stop. 🥰 (As opposed to human babies in strollers, for which I usually have to feign interest. 😅)

Sarah Manx

Girl. Is that Benita. 🥺😔💚

Cat McAteer

I can't wait until this goes live for the unwashed masses so I can share this with a possum mama friend.

Ruth Merriam

Ah man I'm sorry Amy! Good luck with this bumpy time, hope you find a solution that suits ya.

Danielle Corsetto

I'm going through some old pages now and cringing at my early methods! But I'm learning and growing. It's actually really cool to see how far I've come throughout the book (and fingers crossed, by the end of the book I'll look back at this page and be like "ugh, I'd do that differently now!").

Danielle Corsetto

Ahhh dammit, I wondered! Yeah, wait and see what happens. I wanna be optimistic and say that maybe some decent competitor will step up and become New Etsy, but, I mean... Etsy got really good at what they do for the most part. It ain't gonna spring up out of the blue!

Danielle Corsetto

Opossums -- nature's chainsaw!

Mark Ashworth

Oh, Berto, no! XD I am also closing my shop - I used to benefit from their discoverability but every time they've "fixed" search in the last several years, it's just screwed me more. I'm considering Shopify or something, but for now I'm giving up the handmade side of things outside of Patreon benefits and doing Redbubble for ephemera (and t-shirts! and other weird shit!).

Amy Crook

I actually depend on it a lot now for random sales -- recently people have been finding me there way more than they did on storenvy. I WISH I could just count on me own audience for that, but alas! So I'm not sure I can really take on another new store method, I'll have to wait and see what shakes out! But hell yeah, taking the power back for your own damn shop!

Love love love that third panel!

Hugh Eckert

These are things which are difficult to notice if you don’t practice the art, but which nevertheless make a difference in the picture. Thanks for pointing this out, maybe I’ll remember to look for it in the future.

Mikko Parviainen

That means a lot coming from you, thanks gal!! I was fascinated by the backgrounds in Steven Universe and started paying attention to (aka obsessively screen grabbing) the way they render reflections in that show. They're sooo goood.

Danielle Corsetto

From one nerdy cartoonist to another, the way you render reflective materials in color is mesmerizing. This is a very, very niche comment, but I'm super impressed o.o

Cab

I knooow, I thought of you immediately. <3 We're lucky in that our audience is ours, we don't *REALLY* need the discoverability of Etsy, but uggh Etsy was just EASY. And they used to be a great place! I equated it to losing an old internet pal to Qanon. On the bright side, after crunching some numbers, I think I can justify setting up an internal shop with a monthly fee, which I'd been avoiding because I'm not a really active merch seller (it'd probably even out to about the same % when all's said and done). I just don't wanna learn a new program, bluh. You got any thoughts on doing that with your stuff?

Danielle Corsetto

And UGH, Etsy ... this was the site I came to first, and still my only storefront, why do they always have to fuck everything up for creators?

That third panel is GORGEOUS, I don't know how you create atmosphere which what I can only imagine was a super tedious panel!
