Elephant Town Chapter 10 (pages 1-3)

ELEPHANT TOWN IS BACK DID YOU MISS PAUL

Buddy it's the *employee* break room, come on.

So I know Paul's not the fan favorite, but this chapter will feature some of the first few pages of dialogue I wrote for him, and it still tickles me, so I hope you like it. :)

PS, thanks to everyone who voted the other day, homegirl here is officially named Mallory!

He's clearly trying something waaaaay out of his comfort zone without any social tools to work with. It's hard not to feel for him a little bit here, as cringy as it is (and as deeply uncomfortable as I'd be in Mallory's place).

I'll maybe just say that while Paul is not a favorite, not all characters have to be good or make good decisions. That said, I will say I'm trusting you have a good direction for his storyline, since it is a bit more... difficult to read than the other characters. That and the sadly true details of what he is going through make his chapters work so far, though! - - Neal

Once again, thank you for all the personality you give everyone and even the backgrounds!

Theadora

Paul is just so painful. You've done some amazing writing craft at making him such a painfully rendered character.

Chelsea Watson

Someone's in dire need of socialization.

Fred Baker

They're depressingly spot-on, too. Honestly I had to hold back on some of them (there's a lot of racism and self-harm talk in there, it's... woof, a LOT).

Danielle Corsetto

Ahaha I am so glad that's coming through!! You should see how many times I draw & redraw the eye shape on this guy to get that *chef's kiss* uncomfortable middle ground. ;)

Danielle Corsetto

I feel for both of them! It's not that long ago I would've done a Full Paul in that situation… πŸ™‚

Love the little details. The tiny bits of food flinging from his mouth as he talks, the creepy grin in his shadowy outline as she responds to his greeting, font size to indicate over-loudness... I understand people trying to see Paul's side of things, but I'm really feeling for Mallory here.

Dan Wilson

Paul is so cringeworthy but I like experiencing him and feel so sorry for him. Plus those "incel" frames were enlightening and shocking.

I appreciate the challenge you've taken on with this character. Balancing "his behavior is creepy" with "he's _trying_" is playing the game on the Expert setting.

Andy Ihnatko

oh no, nope. i literally cringed at that last panel. i love it!

Sabrina

Ahahaah that is the highest compliment, thank you!!

Danielle Corsetto

I’m always excited for Paul’s pages! It’s already hard enough to make people feel anything through comic pages, but you do it brilliantly. We feel TERRIBLE

It takes many many years for some of us to realise that there is no magic cheat code, sadly.

Damon Hart-Davis

Repeat after me: "Women are people, just like me and you. There is no secret activation code." I have to admit that I had a physical reaction to this, where my upper body was angling away from my phone. I've been around too many Pauls... 😬 -Jessica
